When a car is written off there are two types.

1. Repairable write-off, which can be repaired and registered.

2. Total write off (lol total isnt the word i cant remeber what it is), but it cant be rego'd.

If your thinking of buying a written off car, it would do you well to find out which of the two occurred.

the difference between damaged and written off is the damaged car is still rwc so has panel damage and dents.

but then again damaged cud mean written off, stat written off if their just using the word in general

statutory write off, unable to be registered ever again - usually sustained heavy hit to crucial areas which cannot be repaired without weaking the sturcutre of the car, also, if it bends the firewall more than a 300 by 300mm squared area, its a staturory write off...

repairable write off, usually not too bad, some are hit hard, others are not too bad, this is easier for the insurance companys to cut thier losses, pay the insured out and auctiojn the car and get more money back than what it would of cost to repair, most cars that are new and in a decent acco, get written off, cos the cons of parts is high and not worth ithe insurance companys repairing...

its all about money

A repairable write-off is a car with damage that's not economical to fix. Like den says, it's all about money.

The insurance companies will usually use a rule of thumb that says that if the repairs to the vehicle are more than half the insured value (agreed or market, whatever) then it's a repairable write off.

thanks a lot for the reply.

im not sure whether the car is write-off or damaged.

how do we know that the car is stated as written-off. cos the guys just sell the car in a slightly damaged condition,so it is a repairable write-off?

thanks

yah the car has front damages, like front panel, hood and bumper.

but its not longer registered,so it is still called a stat write-off?

thanks

but then we still can register those types of car, right?

it is just we have to pay for the repairing cost ourselves. is that right.

and do we have to repair it on an official centre[like audi centre, etc], because as we know some parts are cheaper off ebay.

guys

damaged: that means u can repair the car and if its registered u can just get a roadworthy for it and that is it. if not registered that means its a write off

write-off: written off cars that are repairable that have a big hit and able to repair it by a panel beater then repair it and then u have this story, u have to get a VIV for it and its a pain in the back u have to pay $550 to get it checked by vicroads and if they pass it then u can register it and rwc and u r done, if not u have 3 chances to fix the damage after third test if it doesnt pass then u will never be able to register it in oz so i wouldnt recommend buying a written off car because my friend bought an fto and spent over $7000 just for the viv and lost alot of money on that car so just dont buy written off cars. unless u wanna use them for parts

thanks a lot man for the reply.

anyway how we get the roadworthy and is it hard?

and how do we know that a car is a damage only car or the writen-off?

thank you

So statutory (spelling?) write off? Or insurance (repairable) write off?

You can have a few panels damaged and be written off by the insurance company, if its not statutory then you can repair it and put the car back on the road.

But as above, the insurance company found it too expensive to repair so decided to write it off...

check the chassis number on revs for your state, it will tell you there...

must go thru a viv inspection by rta inspectors, you must provide all your recipts for repairs and pay tax on it when registering..

thanks man for the reply..

about the receipts for repairs, how if i get some items from ebay, like the front bumper..

thanks

was the damaged even claimed on insurance, or did they damage the car, not claim it on insurance and then just let the rego run out?

if it wasn't claimed on insurance then all you have to do is fix it then get a roadworthy.

and the rest has been said above. stat write off means it's stuffed, so unless you want it for parts don't bother.

repairable write off means that the damage was going to cost close to or more to fix than to pay out the car.

as for receipts, something like a bumper you may not need to show a reciept for, but you could always just do a print screen of the closed auction, or ask the seller to write a quick reciept for it.

    • I thought that might be the case, thats what I'll start saving for. Thanks for the info
    • Ps i found the below forum and it seems to be the same scenario Im dealing with. Going to check my ECU coolant temp wire tomorrow    From NICOclub forum: s1 RB25det flooding at start up Thu Apr 11, 2013 7:23 am I am completely lost on this. Car ran perfectly fine when I parked it at the end of the year. I took the engine out and painted the engine bay, and put a fuel cell with an inline walbro 255 instead of the in tank unit I had last year. After reinstalling everything, the engine floods when the fuel pump primes. if i pull the fuel pump fuse it'll start, and as soon as I put the fuse back in it starts running ridiculously rich. I checked the tps voltage, and its fine. Cleaned the maf as it had some dust from sitting on a shelf all winter, fuel pressure is correct while running, but wont fire until there is less than 5psi in the lines. The fuel lines are run correctly. I have found a few threads with the same problem but no actual explanation of what fixed it, the threads just ended. Any help would be appreciated. I found the problem though. There was a break in one of the ecu coolant temp sensor wires. Once it was repaired it fired right up with no problems. I would have never thought a non working coolant temp sensor would have caused such an issue.
    • Hi sorry late reply I didnt get a chance to take any pics (my mechanics on the other side of the city) but the plugs were fouled from being too rich. I noticed the MAF wasn't genuine, so I replaced it with a genuine green label unit. I also swapped in a different ignitor, but the issue remains. I've narrowed it down a bit now: - If I unplug and reconnect the fuel lines and install fresh spark plugs, the car starts right up and runs perfectly. Took it around the block with no issues - As soon as I shut it off and try to restart, it won't start again - Fuel pressure while cranking is steady around 40 psi, injectors have good spray, return line is clear, and the FPR vacuum is working. It just seems like it's getting flooded after the first start I unplugged coolant sensors to see if its related to ECU flooding but that didnt make a difference. Im thinking its related to this because this issue only started happening after fixing coolant leaks and replacing the bottom part of the stock manifolds coolant pipe. My mechanic took off the inlet to get to get to do these repairs. My mechanics actually just an old mate who's retired now so ill be taking it to a different mechanic who i know has exp with RBs to see if they find anything. If you have any ideas please send em lll give it a try. Ive tried other things like swapping the injectors, fuel rail, different fuel pressure regs, different ignitor, spark plugs, comp test and MAF but the same issue persists.
    • My return flow is custom and puts the return behind the reo, instead of at the bottom. All my core is in the air flow, rather than losing some of it up behind the reo. I realise that the core really acts more as a spiky heatsink than as a constant rate heat exchanger, and that therefore size is important.... but mine fits everything I needed and wanted without having to cut anything, and that's worth something too. And there won't be a hot patch of core up behind the reo after every hit, releasing heat back into the intake air.
    • There is a really fun solution to this problem, buy a Haltech (or ECU of your choice) and put the MAF in the bin.  I'm assuming your going to want more power in future, so you'll need to get the ECU at some stage. I'd put the new MAF money towards the new ECU.
