so u can actually rent gtr skylines in japan like u can rent commodores over here?

Yep.

Its unlimited km's all you pay is the rental fee and and return the car with a full tank of fuel.

A mate and I rented one from Premium Rental when we were there in July.

We drove it to Fuji from Tokyo, it was awesome the roads to Fuji summit are crazy!

Best day we had while we were there.

A tip to anyone hiring a car while over there, you can get travel insurance to reduce your excess to nearly nothing if you crash with places like cover more.

The excess for me is nearly $6000 with Premium Rental without it. Its the same excess cost for the GT3.

If i was to have a stack in Japan i would much rather leave it on the side of the road and have an insurance company pay for the taxi ride to the hotel or ambulance ride to the hospital.

Hi everyone, long time (on and off) reader, first time post....

I am currently in Tokyo and have been seriously considering a 24 hr rental - i have done all the things required as far as prep goes, international licence, travel insurance on rental car claim excess up to $5K covered , etc

only things making me hesitant are:

- my zero Jap language and thus potential probs with tolls/traffic signs etc

- (in)ability to get outta greater Tokyo with ease,,,

I Have a local Tokyo fren who i am trying to get to come with me but they dont instill a whole lotta confidence in me either (girl, plus not that cluey, doesnt drive herself),

i feel so close yet so far, can anyone give either re-assure or advice? :-)

any info on What (specific) path/route/course to take ?

Many thanks in advance,Ed

go for it buddy. if you have never driven an R35 GTR before then it's a great chance to do it.

unfortunately your japanese girl friend will be almost 100% useless if she doesn't drive herself. it takes a bit of driving around in tokyo to get the hang of the ring roads and surface streets etc. if you can possibly get one with english navi that will help a lot, but at least since you have a native japanese speaker she should be able to work japanese navi for you. that will help a lot. as far as tolls go it's pretty easy. just have lots of cash with you! you basically usually get a ticket at the first toll gate, then when you get to your exit or the end of that particular toll road there will be another toll booth and you give them the ticket you got earlier (don't lose it in between!) and they then know how far you've travelled and hence how much you owe. they punch it up on a display and you pay the man.

enjoy. :)

Thanx Baron,

A few little twists to the plans - I spoke with the fella @ premium yest morn and he tells me the ONLY avail (well, b4 i leave to korea for a side trip on sun 1pm) is Sat (which is good!)...... , but only for 12 hrs (which is bad,,,,,, i think?!)

I am even considering doing the 12 hr rental (8pm pick up sat nite, 9am drop off sund morn, get the xtra hr coz their close time is early^^),,, since he said it was only available from 3pm sat, i askd, 'cant i get a 24 hr rental and jus return it 9am sund?'....

then he points out that if i want EIGHTEEN hrs (which i would still gladly pay the 24 hr price for), it would be 12 hr price + 6 x hrly rate (which is a lot more), , , a bit of Japanese wtf.....

in any case, have been researching Shuto Expressway., drive across rainbow bridge, poss down to yokohama, etc

all sounds good, tho all speed limits are max 80kph apparently,,, LOL :-P

i will be looking into things further :-) got a coupl of days to come up with somethin

    • What 1.5 way? There's no such thing really as a 1.5 way, just different ways of explaining 2 ways with different ramp rates. HOWEVER. In any driving in a straight line your 1.5 or 2 or 1.7 way should have no clunking at all. With the clutch fully depressed the diff should be silent (unless it's welded but I'm assuming it's not). Something aint right here.
    • Clutch is a spec brand, new clutch system,( PP, flywheel, friction disc, etc. pull type) installed 100 miles ago, with no problems.
    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drove beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?
