Hi all,

Don't know if i'm posting in the right area.

I've got a 4 door 1998 GT R34, i've had to fix a few things but the next thing needs fixing is the exhaust. Rusted so needs replacing.

Now i see if im replacing it i might as well put something good in there instead of stock.

Now i need some help on where i should be looking and what im looking for (completely dont know.. brother in law does insteas)

I've heard that P platers have a certain restriction on what can be put on the car as it counts as a performance upgrade and theres a limit to what the car can do.

So i'm looking for a cannon to be put on the car but i don't want just a tip i want it to be right so if anyone can give me some suggestions of what i should be looking for to make it still legal for p plater to drive i'd appreciate it.

In Sydney by the way.

Cheers

Yeah tried searching through a bit but couldnt find anything about being legal for p plater etc and to do with same skyline as mine so wanted to see what ppl would say. Thanks for that

its not an engine modification so all the rules that apply to every other driver will apply to you as well when it comes to exhausts.

i.e it must not go over 89 or 90 DB loud.. not sure check with EPA

everyone suggests 2.5 inch mandrel bent for a NA skyline, just get an exhaust shop to weld you a 2.5 inch cat-back pipe to a canon and bobs ur uncle. it will cost ya around $300

u didn't find anything about it being p-plate legal for a car caus it doesnt exist.

welcome to SAU, before posting a question next time, search the forums or GOOGLE it.. ta

I would 'think' that the 'legal' option is to replace it with a replacement OEM exhaust. Of course this isn't always the practical alternative.

Replacing with say a turbo factory exhaust will give you the flow and performance without all the added noise and unwanted attention.

Alternatively, do a custom 2.5" exhaust, but make sure the rear muffler at least "looks" factory, and you use enough resonators to quieten it down, and you will have a good flowing exhaust that won't attract too much attention, and at least you could try and justify that you replaced a rusted exhaust with something that was close enough to factory.

It seems that some cops will pull up any p plate skyline to inspect for illegal modifications; others probably won't harrass you about the exhaust.

The bottom line though is that any modification that affects the performance of a vehicle is illegal under a restricted provisional licence, and try justifying a performance exhaust on a skyline to a police officer who would expect the story to be made up.

I was under the impression that a performance exhaust is still illegal? If I'm wrong I stand corrected. As usual the RTA laws aren't exactly clear cut in black and white when it comes to what can and can't be done.

Those two threads sum up most of the discussion that's been had here on N/A P Plate Performance which will probably answer other questions you may have.

however if you are concerned with the legalities of modifications - isn't the most logical place your local transport authority? it varies from state to state, so there's no real point asking here; what might be ok for one of the guys here may not be ok for you. so whatever you read on the forums i suggest that you do a bit of your own homework and pick up the phone to whichever legal transport authority it is in your state.

N-dawg put up some good threads, have a look around the forum and see what else you may have missed.

If you want an exhaust, here's some threads to get you started. Please ask any further questions in those threads.

    • HFM BM57 has a "bad" knee point, IIRC. It's not the same thing as the later R chassis MC.
    • The ATTESSA is functionally identical to R34; there were a bunch of JDM models that continued ATTESSA including Fuga/Q70, Skyline/Q50, Cima etc as an option. All with Auto only and I think mostly for snow regions. AFAIK there were no AWD VR30DDTT sold in Australia - it is on my to do list to check regs for racing a LHD car in Targa/ATR/AASA/CAMS events because if I can get the auto to work it would be interesting to run a 4wd car The Ecuteck TCM tuning is the same model as their ECU tuning, they already have it for R35 and Dose's favourite, BMW. You buy "points" to allow your computer to be tuned, buy either a bluetooth (phone app) or bluetooth+USB+Key (phone and PC) dongle, and pay for a tune that will be locked to your tuner ( ). You can also access the tuning software yourself but 1. it is mega expensive and 2. these computers have a billion parameters that intersect, so how could you ever spend enough time on it to get a decent result.
    • Or, is it a case of what it is like owning an R series Skyline? NFI what the previous owner has done or fiddled with... Ha ha ha After reading through this thread, I went on a bit of a research about the Q50/Q60. Now I'm quite intrigued by them! Is the AWD in them more like a WRX where it's always AWD, or is it more like the ATTESSA in the GTRs? By the sound of this TCU tuning, this sounds like a case of someone has made some real software for it, and you just need the right piece of hardware, and then you license that specific vehicle/TCU. Or is this a case of the software will be really expensive so only a few tuners have it, and you still have to pay a license per vehicle?
    • By popular demand.. it was a coil. Got my hands on 1 new OEM coil, replaced with the one that made the less noise difference when I unplugged it while the car was running and started the car up. No stutter and the engine light was gone. I guess I’ll buy the other 5 they have lol
    • No, code 21 is very straightforward. It can only be the things described in that diagnostic flow. In fact it has no way of knowing that the spark plug resistance is out of spec.
