Well said Ben.

I know a woman who stopped in the middle of the road and abandoned her car when she saw a spider in her car. Another car ran into her and had to pay all damages. Apparently, the Police told her that what she did was quite legal and the other driver was at fault for running into her.

Accidents happen - I've done it myself where I've only had laid-up insurance on a vehicle and forgot to change to comprehensive when I started to drive it on the road again. Which reminds me, thank goodness (and OP for the timely reminder) - I've just agreed to let someone borrow my Statesman to attend a wedding out of town and it only has laid-up insurance. I'll have to change it to comprehensive before I lend them the car. Thats how damn easy it is to let something lapse and not be fully insured when you need to be.

Its a horrible experience, even when you have insurance which is then compacted tenfold when you don't. Then if your finances are suffering there is a whole new stress of getting around and recovering your losses.

Fandango - I feel for your situation and hope you can recover soon. Please do investigate, their insurance may be able to pick it up, its well worth the investigation and I hope that spider didn't give you too much of a fright or whatever it was that caused the accident.

PS: has anyone EVER driven where there is diesel on the road? Holy sh!t thats slippery, I was fortunate, but don't know how I didn't hit anyone because I had zero control of the car while it was in the diesel and for about 60 feet after.

so if i wanted to get rid of my skyline is park it 90 degrees to the traffic on a main road get out the car let some poor sucker clean it up and tell the coppers itsy bitsi spider fell from the sunvisor into my lap and thats ok .. good plan

AHHH no devistating.

I understand both sides, in a way its his fault but I guess you shouldnt have been there. I guess you gotta look at if from the other guys side. if it was 10 seconds, which it may have only been 5 or 4 because everything happens so fast but you think its slow because of the adrenolin... If you were the other guy, just driving along, then suddenly there is a car sideways in your lane and you end up writing it off... THEN to top it off it ends up being all your fault and paying it off for the next few years, then that sounds kinda bad.

But then I also understand if it was infact 10 seconds then he should have had plenty of time to stop. Did you stall it and you couldnt move? or was the car already undrivable?

Do you have any pics?? Its a shame about the liner though. but I am happy no one got hurt, do what you gotta do.. and definately get a doctor check up too.

:P

so someone's car stops in the middle of the road...has a blowout at 100 kays, see's a accident and slows down, some kid lays some oil and u spin out and when your stopped a car hits you. ...all of these could happen and sure if you hit some1 when you dont have control of the car then it's your fault for losing control.

but when a car is stopped, and you drive into it, you obviously weren't paying attention and it's your fault. what are brakes for, what are other lanes for...u see someone stopeed, you move or slow down...or you pay for the damges that you caused.

he didn't cause them by losing control...usually you can jsut drive off and your all sweet...but because of some douche now his car is rooted, could be out of a job etc etc

anyway mate...bad luck...where abouts is the car hit??? back of it? im kinda tempted to buy your engine now lol :P

I'm not saying to make a story up, so please don't put words in my mouth. But I am saying that you don't have all the facts, yet are assuming an awful lot. Bottom line is, you don't know what caused the car to be where it was at the time.

well im still waiting for him to reply as too what caused him to be 90 deg in the next couple of lanes over i have the same facts as you but i do know one fact he was driving in a straight line he would not of gotton t boned by some poor bloke minding his own business

it was hit in the side cause he was parked across the lane the bloke didnt run up his arse he drove into the side of the car

I may have missed it, but I can't see anywhere where the OP said he was 90 deg. Now he may have been and I'm not saying he wasn't, however lets not make assumptions and fill in the blanks... unless you don't want the truth to get in the way of a good story.

From memory, I thought it was wet that day and we don't know what was on the surface or how good OP's tyres were (my new Falkens were shit in the rain, I'm putting them back on the GTST just to get my moneys worth out of them on the skidpan).

I say lets support our fellow liners when things get dark and hope that if anyone on these forums do happen to have a silly moment, that they learn from their mistakes rather than get heckled by us.

Sorry to hear your story bro.. I know how you feel, I wrote mine off a couple weeks ago in the wet. I am still waiting to find out if my insurance is gunna cover me. Even if they do, i would rather have teh car.

As for what to do next, I am going on a trip to London for a while, then work on getting a R34 GTR!!!

You could always buy another damaged Skyline and put the two together..depending how bad the damage is.

So this is how it happened… to end all the debate.

I was driving along the park way at about 6.10, heading towards belco. it was pissing down rain. I was doing just over the speed limit, say 85 km’s. I had just come out of a tunnel and there was a slight corner, I went to turn and the car went straight….. touched the brake just lightly and the back end came out and that was just about that…… I have never had so little control over a car in my life. I was sliding for close to 350 meters and ended up hitting the guard rail with the front, pulling the front bar off and a little panel damage…… then it finally came to a stop… with my ass up against the guard rail, front end pointing out and yes I was at 90 degrees. Sat there for about 10 seconds and had enough time to think “ this is ok, I’ll just buy a new front bar and put my front mount on…. Will be ok” my mate was just about to jump out of the car, as 4 cars had driven past. Then we seen this car just rolling up… at first I thought he was rolling up nice and close to help. Then he wasn’t slowing down. Not really braking…. Not doing anything to prevent a collision. it looked like someone rolling up to traffic lights…. Then bang…. Hit at about 30 into the passenger side door.

First thing he said was “I didn’t see u”……. now 4 cars had slowed down and driven around. I totally understand that I shouldn’t have been there, don’t worry about that. And I know if I was to take him to court I would lose points and get a small fine. BUT. I had crashed, I had managed to keep enough control over my vehicle to not damage anyone else’s. he didn’t.

And yes if ur interested in buying any of my stuff it will be for sale quiet soon im thinking…. Unless I get a good quote to fix it….. but I cant see that happening

thanks for that driftgts, and now the question is.....

how much could i sell the motor, transmission, and all that kind stuff for. car still runs and everything is in perfect condition. has 92,000 on the clock

is 6 grand a stupid amount or close to the mark?

how the hell is that karma!? you rag him up after he asks for help... :)

+1

Mid life Crisis

There's no need to be so hard on the guy, he's obviously a bit upset and unhappy about having his car smashed, it could have happened to anyone.

How about not criticising and maybe try to help the guy?

An RB25DET with low k's a good condition gearbox, turbo, ECU etc. will usually go for about 5 - 6k depending on demand... To give you an idea: an R33 Gtst gearbox in good cond. can fetch 2 - 2.5k on its own.

However I would be looking into getting a good cond. rolling shell R33 or R32 Gtst and transplanting your motor drivetrain into it. :D

I'm sorry to hear about this.

It sucks cause the other guy doesn't have insurance, otherwise I would be chasing it. But the fact was if you spun for 350 meters at 80, a car's stopping distance without ABS on the same road would be 350 meters if he locked up the wheels.

If he had insurance I would follow it up, but since he doesn't, your just going to give him a $15,000 debt, and thats up to you if you want to do that.

it was slippery as f**k last friday cause it was raining after a long time without rain. i remember my car stepping out suddenly on a part where there had been road works cause there was loose dirt and oil on the road. if 4 other cars had driven past then that guy was probably either blind or paying attention to something else other than the road.

you should be able to get a few thousand back on your car if you wreck it. (try the R31 skyline club cause people are always looking for upgrades to the RB30E :) )

awesome guys thanks for ur help.

where would i find and r32/r33 shell, and how much work is it to drop my engine/gearbox etc in it??? and how much does the shell go for?

and r31 club??... where would i find this, i might put it up for sale and see what kinda offers it get if its to much work to drop all my stuff into a shell.

again thanks guys for ur helpful replies, giving me alot more idea then i had at first

There are quite often rolling shells available on these forums, the price depends on the condition... If you got another R33 Gtst shell it would be easy to drop your engine and driveline in it yourseld (as long as you had someone who knows Skylines to help).

    • Have a vb in honour of the car comming back
    • It was a great, but typical track day, and some VB was ingested at the night time debrief 🤪
    • And so, to round this out, I couldn't be happier to confirm @MBS206 has decided to buy the car. He drove down from sunny QLD with a trailer last week and it is off to its new home today. I'll let Matt confirm on next steps but I understand broadly that the plan is to leave it pretty much as is, and just get some quality wheel time with a nicely balanced car that is pretty much track ready. There are a few a jobs still to be done first but nothing too major and I think its a very smart buy Dinner last night at the Paragon with a round of VBs (mostly) for Neil
    • Well, 50 pages and the end of a chapter for this car. We took it out for a shakedown at Wakie yesterday, and everything went well. There were a couple of niggles: - Oil cooler fitting leak - tightened, cleaned, stopped leaking - Radiator cap overflow fitting was leaking....Mark called it, the overflow fitting was threaded in and not tight....tightened, tested and held pressure - Small oil leak at the rear of the block, probably the turbo oil feed - too hot to get at it comfortably but probably just needs to be nipped up - leak at the driver's side rear brake line where it meets the hardline. Fitting wasn't loose, so Matt backed it off and back on, no further leaks - there's also a leak somewhere on the top of the fuel tank, maybe that cross over fuel line - that was has been left to fix when its on a hoist Otherwise than those niggles the car went great, turned great and stopped great so it was a very successful day out. I'm always really nervous when a car first hits the track after a long break, especially with a brand new engine as well but it was great. VID-20251011-WA0007.mp4  Big thanks to @The Bogan who dropped by and helped out, @MBS206 and my nephew Lachlan the apprentice.  Neil's wife Mel also surprised the hell out of all of us by dropping by; she's up in Tamworth these days but was travelling to Melbourne so had plausible deniability for turning up at the garage, it was great to see her but also obviously a bit sad all round.
