ok guys went home then roo and i pulled half the motor apart and found what was wrong

+1 turbo and wheel undamaged and in almost knew condition

+1 timing belt and adjusters ok and also like new

pulled off rocker covers and had good movement, cams in good condition with little wear, car has only 81,000km i suppose should be ok

checked compression in pistons and found they have bout 150psi in 1-5 pistons then a big fat 0 in piston 6

then after inspection found conrod 6 is nacked as piston stuck on top dead center, was able to push down so isnt seized, know have the fun job off pulling apart to see how bad

big fat - for my 1st turbo experience,is it easier to do in car or rip motor out ? id say out, ill need to borrow a hoist if anyone got one not using

bad news mate, if the rods been flopping around in the bore then i think it could have done some major damage or the piston might have broken it half. i hope its not to costly for ya.

We'll know the full story when we get the head off this weekend, then drop the sump. Worse case scenario, the broken rod has damaged the bore and maybe some. But we see no holes punched thru the block thats for sure.

Anyone know of a seized RB25 engine lying around anywhere to donate a rod and maybe a piston?

The ripper, was the oil drain hose from the turbo was some heater hose bent to the sump, which resulted in a 'crimped' hose limiting/stopping oil draining back into the sump. God there are some dodgy mechanics out there. :P

ouch, really bad news mate, and I agree with chad, if its flopped around the bore is going to be stuffed under the piston, if the main rod cap broke off expect a lot of damage in the sump ,crank ? which sounds like what happened if you can move it in the bore still you broke the main cap off the rod or broke the rod itself ? is there a hole in the block anywhere by number 6 ? it may have put a chunk out of the block to create the noise of something coming past you under the car ?

also , if you tear it down check the oil pump/galleries it may have failed to get that problem with oil starvation ?

easier to fix with the engine out ? plus its going to need machining anyway

sorry for the bad news , ask santa for some forged pistons and rods ?

Unlucky #6 hey

Any sign of detonation?

Piston/spark plug colour compared to the others ect..

Always best to try and diagnose why it happened so you can avoid it in the future.

I hope it's an easy fix for you (and Reuben).

Goodluck

yeah no detonation in 6 just bit more oily than others, looks to be no holes in block but will see after get motor out i guess, seems it may have been quick break, but we we also see, thanks guys i hope its not that bad either, give my a good reason for new rings etc maybe more, see what $ are like after xmas, thanks to you roo for coming over for our boys session, looks to be you help me i help you at moment, always cool, chat to you on wkend

i had piston 6 go on my car also ages ago but was on the dyno when it happened so ijust did a full forged engine rebuild

i have a set of series 1 rb25 rods sitting at home in good nick but with pistons still connected if u interested in buying, but you'll have to buy all 6

We'll rip the engine down and then you'll know the full extent and what you'll be saving up for Damo.

I figured it was 'out of character' when the engine was turned over and #6 piston wasn't moving :P

Colour of the spark plugs were all good and consistent. #6 was wet from fuel. Even pressure in all cylinders except for #6.

I'm praying the rod broke clean and didn't touch the bore (unlikely, but one can hope). Turning the engine over makes no noises or obstructions to seize the crank. Who knows, we might be lucky ;)

But we'll know more on the weekend. Stock up on beer and bullshit Damo, we might be sharing it around. :)

let me know how much u want in case i have to go that way, thanks

    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.
    • My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.
    • Awesome, thanks for sharing!
    • To provide more specific help, more information is needed. What Android screen? What is its wiring diagram? Does the car's wiring have power at any required BAT and ACC wires, and is the loom's earth good?
    • So, now all you need to do is connect the 2 or 3x 12v feeds into the unit to permanent 12v, ACC 12V and IGN 12V that you can find in the spot behind the stereo, and the earth, and then it will switch on with the car.
