Tips For A New Queenslander!

Hi All,

I'm moving up To Brisbane very shortly (less than 3 months) from Melbourne. Work has offered me a position that I couldn't refuse, so I'll be about for a least 3 years. Currently we're looking for a house to buy within our price range, etc and was after some info about some good areas and areas to keep away from. Also some travel times into the city. I'l lbe working from home mostly, so travel time in peak hour isn't really an issue. My Fiance' will most likely be working in the city however.....

Also what motorsport activities happen? Is SAU QLD CAMS affiliated? Is there any curcuit championship or anything?

Any info/tips/pointers, etc, would be much apprieciated.

It's been a while since I've lived in Brisbane but the general consensus is to stay away from Moorooka and surrounding areas.

If you're interested in the Track then you should check out Ruzic's group who recently got good sponsors for his QR sprint series.

if you want to be a fully fledged qld'er then you have to support all the local sporting teams, drink XXXX and dress in tshirt/singlet, shorts and thongs on your days off. :cool:

just like with any major city, the further you live from the city, the longer it will take to to get in. the public transport has improved over the years. i only moved back to brissy after living in sydney for the last 7 years and i did notice that the bus service has improved alot...from the southside anyway.

i have noticed that traffic has gotten alot worse now. depending on which direction you'll be coming into the city will determine the travel time also. not during peak hour, i can get from sunnybank (suburb about 15km's south of the city) into the city in about 15 mins. the freeways here are always pretty free flowing and even in peak hour you are still moving though at a slow pace. it's a carpark on the main roads in sydney during peak hour.

if you provided us with info about what suburbs you were interested in moving to then i'm sure people can provide better info.

a nice area to live in Loganholme or Tanah Merah, it you wanna be sorta away from the brisbane rush, but then again its only a 30 minute drive from the CBD via the M1. so if you wanna live in a quiet suburb but still wanna be close to everything Logan is the area for you. a little further south you have Ormeau/Pimpama/Upper Coomera, they are all pretty much half way between GC and CBD (GoldCoast and Brissy) but all have fantastic houses...

places to stay away from.... no offence to the ppl that live there but... probably Eagleby.... or Beenleigh. not because of the people so much but all the houses are really.. really.. really... old/falling apart.. you may find the odd house that is new or so. but mostly old houses.

Thanks for the replies guys!!! We were looking south of the river. There are a few homes that we've both liked the look of in a fair few places. Inala, browns Plains, Loganlea, Tanah Merah, Slacks Creek, Redbank plains, Camira - which seems a fair way out, etc

So what area are most SAU'ers from? What's security like? I read that someone came home to find a junkie going through their kitchen? Kind of thing you find in Eagleby?? :P

Or woodridge you will get them in your backyard.

If you could afford it, and wanted nice living go to victoria point or redland bay... i moved from frankston to here 5 yrs ago and have never looked back.

i would advise you to stay away from inala definately and browns plains really is not a desirable area, some areas of loganlea are f**ked aswell. i live at woolloongabba and MOST of the surrounding areas seem ok but theres still some shit hanging around. if i had to pick id probably look at the surrounding areas of Mt. Gravatt

I've been in Brisbane, a couple of months over a year now. I've been told to stay away from Inala also and that if I park my car it will probably be gone when I get back lol

In Mt Gravatt shared accomodation at the moment, Mt Gravatt's really central and close to everything really, but not the most affordable though. Gets a bit cheaper once you start moving further away from Mt Gravatt or further from the CBD in general though.

ive lived in all these areas many moons ago - stay away well away if you have a decent car

I have always lived in manly..its on the bay bout 20 min drive to the city and is just a nice place...pub is good and lots of parks and nice areas..

i agree manly is the best place i've lived, there's fishing, 2 pretty good pubs, you can eat fish and chips by the water and there is a train station.

thats pretty much the shit list of brisbane

i agree that mt gravatt and surrounds are the best on the south side

So what sort of places are you guys living in? Rentals, units, houses, etc?

We want a decent 3br, house with double lock up garage as a minimum. Looking in the good ares, it looks like it is expensive to get something along those lines........

      And if you want more power, more reliably, and cheaper, go get the Aussie RB... The 4L Barra and put that in instead.

      No cats will keep discolouring the rear bar. Sends white paint a weird yellow stain. Cut and polish normally gets it out, but you'll be doing that every fortnight I found.

      Both heads will be equally reliable or unreliable depending on what you do to them.  Stock the RB26 head will flow more. You have access to the stock intake ITB manifold on the RB26 cheaply which flows really well(1000hp+).   Arguably more aftermarket support for RB26, though in Aus we love our RB30 SOHC heads too.    The only downsides to the RB26 head is if you have a VL commodore and want to keep the SOHC look.  Where you may have an issue is drilling out the rb30 block for the bigger head studs but if you are building a big power motor you'd probably put bigger studs on the SOHC head too.  This is just about finding a good machine shop, sometimes easier said than done.  RB30 head worked can make big power just like a Rb26 head, so really it actually more comes down to what your preference is for your car.  People now even making billet versions of both.

      2630s work perfectly well. There is something to be said for just using the 30 head, as it saves all the pain of the conversion, still makes tons of power, still sounds cool, etc etc. 2630 will obviously make more power again, but the differences are not stupidly big. It really depends on whether you're racing for sheep stations or not. If it's dead serious, then it's a 26 head. If it's just for fun, it could go either way. But the 26 head and the effort to get it set up, etc etc, is part of the fun.

I had a 32 gtr but blew it up and yes its all going into a vl but im looking for some advice from some RB nuts on pros and cons on putting a 26 head on a 30 bottom end is it worth it Works are as follows Head -Extensive porting 1mm oversized supertech valves Supertech double springs Supertech valve guides Supertech titanium retainers Tomei solid lifters Tomei 270 x 10.25 cams Head drain Bottom end series 2 rb30 block Cp ceramic coated pistons Eagle rods Romac balancer Oil restrictions  O ringed blah blah spent a fortune And will get a girdle because the 30s arent used to handling that much rpm Nitto billet oil pump Hypertune plenum 6boost mani Refurbed astra pump thats the cover for it in the boot I did have a precision 6262 but sold it because drag car life. Currently building the ass end full 4 link floater rear end with a 2 speed  But the dilemma i have is my mate rekens I should just stick with the 30 head for reliability. Has any one had any issues with mounting the 26 head ie compression blowing gaskets etc. Just looking for some advice from people who have gone down this route. Here's some photos. Blew the oil pump in the gtr and decided to rip the motor out at the time and do a full build only to find it had been a repairable write off so went down this path.
