Hi all, i agree with so many of these posts both positive and negative. I have seen both sides of the coin when it comes to defects/police harassment like so many others

and would like to see some sort of consistency regarding not only defects but also Police accountability in defect situations. In regards to involving a local MP in helping

to build a not so negative image ( as much as i wish otherwise, being a minority we will never be portrayed in a truly positive way when it comes to the media ) its not a

hard thing to do at all. You will find that a local MP will also want to build a positive image for themselves in the community, this is how they get elected... I have received

help from a local MP to help raise awareness for something just as highly opinionated in the past and got an article in the Advertiser as well which would give us the opportunity

to try and positively boost ( no pun intended ) our image in the public eye. Its easy to contact these people its just a matter of finding one who is willing to support our efforts.

I wish those actively involved the best of luck in this endeavour, and eagerly await the outcome of this meeting.

Cheers, Simon.

Good post Simon.....that's the key I think, trying to find a willing polly.....you'll know if he is or isn't within 5 mins of speaking to him (or her).

Have a teaspoon of optimism. Something good could come out of this and I hope something does - even if it converts just one Police Officer to see things from our point of view or a few defects less handed out.

Optimism is always good to have Vu but it should always be mixed with a teaspoon of reality.......but all the best with all your efforts.

a reporter from ACA or the like (could do a story about a group of car lovers who want to do the right thing and not get labeled as hoons).

Without diets, bras and hoons ACA would practically have no stories... it is really in their interest that we have negative image in public.

someone needs to explain the situation to me.

Sounds like this is a case for the Office of the Police Ombudsman!

Put in a complaint that they do not know what they are doing and that they need to be qualified before handing out any kind of defect.

in NSW only highway patrol can defect you and as much as i hate to admit, some of them have a pretty damn good clue of what they are looking for because they have been trained properly!

just tryin to help

how bout you read all of the last 6 pages and look up the defect thread in the sticky section instead of demanding someone tell you about this!

for the point of telling you so you can go back to newcastle threads and get outta sa threads here goes:

Vu wrote how he got defected for an airbox, which took up factory postion, or was covered legally! he also got done for a boost controller, yea he put it on he got caught fair enough! we are trying to get across why if a cop can only find 2 faults with the car, should he pay 100s if not 1000s to get the "boost controller" and airbox fixed! this is the difference between a cop shop defect or a regency visit!

so now instead of flaming nene e.t.c and leaving it all to her, how bout we be mature and think about a valid point/letter to send to local mps!

something like.......

Dear joe goonburger blow mp of candy mountain(example)

As a local car enthuiasts(spelling?) club, members of Skylines Australia have thought it neccesary to address a few issues which we bring to your attention.

At a previous import cruise, we had an undercover police officer arrive to a meet point and demanded that the owners open their bonnets to display their modified/non modified engines. Every member cooperated with the police and we later discussed with one officer, that we would work with him, notify him of up coming cruises, and in general we hoped to build a relationship with a member of the police force so we can get the lable of "hoon" taken away or changed.

After the cruise our local forum discussed the events on the cruise and thought that if we could find a local mp to be present at a meeting we have previously organised then we can hopefully work together with police to provided a more fair road rules system.

Our members have thought of some valid points we would like to mention in our meeting with the police officers as listed below:

blah blah blah

I would like to ask for your support or some guidence to contact the necessary mp or persons, to have some support on an issue that not just Skylines Australia have, but other enthusiasts car clubs share!

thankyou for your time, i look forward to hearing from you

***something like the above is a guidline we can work with to send off to a local mp to help us**** feel free to edit it, rip it to bits, i dont care, just putting an input in to ease the load of nene and co

thats a very fair point there jonny

and i definately agree with a mp attending the meeting if possible as that will carry some weight with it

and if possible to get the news corps attention to it as well or aca or likes!

your quote thing is wrong aye, i spelt it right! hehehe

no you didn't its input...not imput.

for example...

"just putting an imput in to ease the load of nene and co"

Guilt Toy was trying to help Jonnyboy...mate you have been here for 200 posts and your carry-on telling him to stay outa SA threads was childish...grow up a bit.

its nice to be nice.

oi if you take a step back from your computer and look at the keyboard, you will prob notice that n is near m, so as i was typing like a pro i made a mistake, not quite the INPUT i was expecting aye

I think your bios needs some work. good luck with it.

you might want to ask them what exactly are their goals to come of this relationship, they are forking out substantial money to just have a police officer follow us around.

also posting these questions up allows them to have well prepared answers as im Niels had a good read of this.

Never know he might start just answering them on the forum :D

As Inline 6 said.. It would be really refreshing if a member of SAPOL could come onto the forums and share their side of the story. And as Cronic mentioned, members of victorian and nsw police have come online and embraced the community also.

Recently we saw a thread started by a victorian member of police asking if we could help him identify a european sportscar doing crazy speeds on the freeway. I see it being a mutually beneficial exercise.

Nene, if you need someone to knock up or edit a letter to an MP or other party, you know I correspond with Governments and COurts all the time. I'm proficient in document production and reports also, so keep that in mind. :D

First of all, Guilt Toy , look at your little video in your profile of the Skyline doing a burn out ? Hello !!!! WITH REGO PLATES SHOWING!!! either way that doesn't reflect in a good manner to the police trolling the forum looking for a reason to Defect a car. your lucky who every owns that car doesnt get a knock at the door for "HOONING" its just adding to the ammunition of police. :D

Even some of the NS/180 guys with profile photos of obvious defects in body kits, way too low or the wrong wheel offset to be legal? looks nice ...but defectable !!!!

Thanks for takening this on Nene, Pete Etc. without someone stepping up to fight back we would all loose the freedom to drive a car of our choice.

a few questions probably worn out by now..lol

1. What training do police have in "Identifying a serious defect in any car" besides the obvious, tires, tint no lights.

2. Not only the MP , Dept of transportation head, SAU, Police commander or a few from around the area? not just Neil. how about a Regency inspector who has some pull to reccomend changes?, and at least a media reporter to give the import people a visible voice to Adelaide, without media this meeting could just be swept under the rug like it never happened? and we can show the media we do love cars, not all of us hoon?

3. I'd like to see a report of all the makes and model of car going thru regency, and the official reason for defect, including ones that get off under the so called "Suss defect"(or more like suss hoon, or suss rapest, suss robber, etc. it is supposed to be your "not guilty until proven guilty"? so arrest someone cause they look shifty and might rob somone? doesn't sound very legal to me? and for mass defects in one spot, I'd love to see them pull into the mall and pop the bonnets on a few dozen cars, bet they would find a lot more defects then a Skyline has.)just my whinge..sorry

4. isnt popping the bonnet to search your car considered a illegal search wihtout consent? unless there is obvious problems with safety? or your drug stash is cooking on the turbo?

5. I spoke to regency many times about a RZ Supra I bought in QLD, in the end it turned out to be way to hard, sold the car and it looked stock, had 85k worth of safe mods on it and competely legal to drive in QLD, why do we play the game of every state just wings it for rules? there must be a better way to streamline the system, but doubt that will happen anytime soon.

6.create a true club not just forum, one that actually has some respect for events, discounts, charity organizations, etc.

7. god forbid you think any skyline with a turbo will actually pass a real CO emissions test,,,,I lived in the emissions hell in the state's these cars are not clean burning cars, which is why they didnt sell them there. So dont punch your cat to make it worse ???? if they pass true emissions laws these cars will be goners!!!

a simple fix,,,,,sell all of the old skylines , everyone buy a dead stock 2009 GTR.....even more powerful...lol I wish..lol

or end up like sheep driving commy executurds with hubcaps and base white paint jobs...still getting defected for having non ADR air in the tires...lol

SAU put up a fight for your rights, dont let them walk all over you ????? saying nothing positve/creative wont help either???

I've spent most of last night thinking about this ( couldn't sleep due to the weather :D ) and I've arrived to the conclusion that I won't bother with any of this defect business anymore, if I get defected, fine so be it. I hardly drive the car now anyway as it is with work and after my boss speaking to me today and basically telling me the company is in my hands until the end of the year which is a GREAT opportunity but also means I have a LOT more stress on my plate than to worry about this.

I'll take the time while the car is off the road and I'm busy working to get engineered what I can, do the right thing and when I get a chance, just drive the damned thing and not worry, it's not my daily so if I do get defected, it's not putting me in a tough position.

I feel bad for doing this but I really think it's a whole group or not thing, if members are against this meeting I don't really see it being sucessful. If it does go ahead, I wish ALL THE BEST to the members involved and I'd like to thank Nene for being so damned awesome to put her ass out on the line for this and even thank Officer Neil to bother to take the time to respond to out mail.

It will never be a whole group unfortunately Luke. This is why SAU will never have its own SA club. I've just been saying about how members complain nothing ever gets done, and when an attempt is made to do something members are still negative. Members even turned on their own over hoodies for f**ks sake. So how are we going to go fighting for better rights and a fair go on the road ... from what I've seen, we don't stand a chance.

So do we only fight for our rights when we know we can win? Be negative if it looks too hard? Shy away from a real fight? Stay behind our keyboards and talk tough? Seems the SAU SA way to me. There are very few members here I know who have bigger balls than the remaining members outright. Kell, Nene and I took on discussion with the cops the day of the last cruise and no one was defected. I'd rather attend a cruise anyday where the organiser won't split/shy away and leave you hanging when cops come. Cops attended our cruises uninvited and we immediate addressed them and kept the other members/cruisers out of the attention of the police. Kell, Nene and I have no idea if we'd win the discussion with the police, but we didn't shy away and no one was defected.

Kell and I have grown tired of the unwarranted negativity of SAU members and no longer run events/cruises. Mega kudos to Nene for not giving up and carrying on the fight. She's a new-ish member and a girl and has shown more enthusiasm than anyone else I know. I'll assist where I can in a minor role, but I'm not on the front line anymore. Can't lead a group anymore who ain't "got your back". Police won't take us seriously if we can't stand together, even when you know its not a win situation. I think its good that only a selected few attend these talks.

With you and Pete now as Moderators is the only reason I've stuck around. I wanna see if the SAU negative population will change their ways.

This is all started with Police giving Kellie/cruise organisers "an ultimatum", about telling them about cruises, or else. Then it turned into, well, this. Cant we just START with asking where we stand with that point? Afetr all, thats what this all has ballooned from.

Funny thing is these new mods want nothing to do with this meeting, what sort of message is that sending out.

    • See if you can thermal epoxy a heatsink or two onto it?
    • The other problem was one of those "oh shit we are going to die moments". Basically the high spec Q50s have a full electric steering rack, and the povo ones had a regular hydraulic rack with an electric pump.  So couple of laps into session 5 as I came into turn 2 (big run off now, happily), the dash turned into a christmas tree and the steering became super heavy and I went well off. I assumed it was a tyre failure so limped to the pits, but everything was OK. But....the master warning light was still on so I checked the DTCs and saw – C13E6 “Heat Protection”. Yes, that bloody steering rack computer sitting where the oil cooler should be has its own sensors and error logic, and decided I was using the steering wheel too much. I really appreciated the helpful information in the manual (my bold) POSSIBLE CAUSE • Continuing the overloading steering (Sports driving in the circuit etc,) “DATA MONITOR” >> “C/M TEMPERATURE”. The rise of steering force motor internal temperature caused the protection function to operate. This is not a system malfunction. INSPECTION END So, basically the electric motor in the steering rack got to 150c, and it decided to shut down without warning for my safety. Didn't feel safe. Short term I'll see if I can duct some air to that motor (the engine bay is sealed pretty tight). Long term, depending on how often this happens, I'll look into swapping the povo spec electric/hydraulic rack in. While the rack should be fine the power supply to the pump will be a pain and might be best to deal with it when I add a PDM.
    • And finally, 2 problems I really need to sort.  Firstly as Matt said the auto trans is not happy as it gets hot - I couldn't log the temps but the gauge showed 90o. On the first day I took it out back in Feb, because the coolant was getting hot I never got to any auto trans issues; but on this day by late session 3 and then really clearly in 4 and 5 as it got hotter it just would not shift up. You can hear the issue really clearly at 12:55 and 16:20 on the vid. So the good news is, literally this week Ecutek finally released tuning for the jatco 7 speed. I'll have a chat to Racebox and see what they can do electrically to keep it cooler and to get the gears, if anything. That will likely take some R&D and can only really happen on track as it never gets even warm with road use. I've also picked up some eye wateringly expensive Redline D6 ATF to try, it had the highest viscosity I could find at 100o so we will see if that helps (just waiting for some oil pan gaskets so I can change it properly). If neither of those work I need to remove the coolant/trans interwarmer and the radiator cooler and go to an external cooler....somewhere.....(goodbye washer reservoir?), and if that fails give up on this mad idea and wait for Nissan to release the manual 400R
    • So, what else.... Power. I don't know what it is making because I haven't done a post tune dyno run yet; I will when I get a chance. It was 240rwkw dead stock. Conclusion from the day....it does not need a single kw more until I sort some other stuff. It comes on so hard that I could hear the twin N1 turbos on the R32 crying, and I just can't use what it has around a tight track with the current setup. Brakes. They are perfect. Hit them hard all day and they never felt like having an issue; you can see in the video we were making ground on much lighter cars on better tyres under brakes. They are standard (red sport) calipers, standard size discs in DBA5000 2 piece, Winmax pads and Motul RBF600 fluid, all from Matty at Racebrakes Sydney. Keeping in mind the car is more powerful than my R32 and weighs 1780, he clearly knows his shit. Suspension. This is one of the first areas I need to change. It has electronically controlled dampers from factory, but everything is just way too soft for track work even on the hardest setting (it is nice when hustling on country roads though). In particular it rolls into oversteer mid corner and pitches too much under hard braking so it becomes unstable eg in the turn 1 kink I need to brake early, turn through the kink then brake again so I don't pirouette like an AE86. I need to get some decent shocks with matched springs and sway bars ASAP, even if it is just a v1 setup until I work out a proper race/rally setup later. Tyres. I am running Yoko A052 in 235/45/18 all round, because that was what I could get in approximately the right height on wheels I had in the shed (Rays/Nismo 18x8 off the old Leaf actually!). As track tyres they are pretty poor; I note GTSBoy recently posted a porker comparo video including them where they were about the same as AD09.....that is nothing like a top line track tyre. I'll start getting that sorted but realistically I should get proper sized wheels first (likely 9.5 +38 front and 11 +55 at the rear, so a custom order, and I can't rotate them like the R32), then work out what the best tyre option is. BTW on that, Targa Tas had gone to road tyres instead of semi slicks now so that is a whole other world of choices to sort. Diff. This is the other thing that urgently needs to be addressed. It left massive 1s out of the fish hook all day, even when I was trying not too (you can also hear it reving on the video, and see the RPM rising too fast compared to speed in the data). It has an open diff that Infiniti optimistically called a B-LSD for "Brake Limited Slip Diff". It does good straight line standing start 11s but it is woeful on the track. Nismo seem to make a 2 way for it.
    • Also, I logged some data from the ECU for each session (mostly oil pressures and various temps, but also speed, revs etc, can't believe I forgot accelerator position). The Ecutek data loads nicely to datazap, I got good data from sessions 2, 3 and 4: https://datazap.me/u/duncanhandleyhgeconsultingcomau/250813-wakefield-session-2?log=0&data=7 https://datazap.me/u/duncanhandleyhgeconsultingcomau/250813-wakefield-session-3?log=0&data=6 https://datazap.me/u/duncanhandleyhgeconsultingcomau/250813-wakefield-session-4?log=0&data=6 Each session is cut into 3 files but loaded together, you can change between them in the top left. As the test sessions are mostly about the car, not me, I basically start by checking the oil pressure (good, or at least consistent all day). These have an electrically controlled oil pump which targets 25psi(!) at low load and 50 at high. I'm running a much thicker oil than recommended by nissan (they said 0w20, I'm running 10w40) so its a little higher. The main thing is that it doesn't drop too far, eg in the long left hand fish hook, or under brakes so I know I'm not getting oil surge. Good start. Then Oil and Coolant temp, plus intercooler and intake temps, like this: Keeping in mind ambient was about 5o at session 2, I'd say the oil temp is good. The coolant temp as OK but a big worry for hot days (it was getting to 110 back in Feb when it was 35o) so I need to keep addressing that. The water to air intercooler is working totally backwards where we get 5o air in the intake, squish/warm it in the turbos (unknown temp) then run it through the intercoolers which are say 65o max in this case, then the result is 20o air into the engine......the day was too atypical to draw a conclusion on that I think, in the united states of freedom they do a lot of upsizing the intercooler and heat exchanger cores to get those temps down but they were OK this time. The other interesting (but not concerning) part for me was the turbo speed vs boost graph: I circled an example from the main straight. With the tune boost peaks at around 18psi but it deliberately drops to about 14psi at redline because the turbos are tiny - they choke at high revs and just create more heat than power if you run them hard all the way. But you can also see the turbo speed at the same time; it raises from about 180,000rpm to 210,000rpm which the boost falls....imagine the turbine speed if they held 18psi to redline. The wastegates are electrically controlled so there is a heap of logic about boost target, actual boost, delta etc etc but it all seems to work well
