Have you done back to backs to prove they are a restriction?

Reason i say this is because if you can make over 400rwkw on them (stock) they cant be too bad :(

You should start a "What parts you do not need for 400kW" thread. I know what you are getting at but this bloke has spent some money on his car you do not need to bring him down a peg by saying what he does not need.

I get it all the time with engine builds...they want this part and that part in there...and when i find out they are chasing 350kw i try and tell them to spend their money elsewhere. But at the end of the day you cannot convince them so i just let them go and spend spend spend.

Aftermarket rods in a GTR is a perfect example as most of the chinese offerings would in my opinion be on par if not worse than prepped stockers. GTR stock rods simply don't bend or break because they are weak...its always something else that makes them go.

So quite rightfully it should be questioned as to how one actually knows they are (when its been pretty well proven… they are not)

Its like having a $500 car and a $150,000 car. They will still get you to the same place @ the same time… its just one is more stylish than another and good for the person that can do it in a 150k car, they worked hard for it no doubt

Looks the goods mate :) Im very interested to see what numbers you pull! I had a set of these put on my car 2 weeks ago and made 258rwkw on 14 psi and 316rwkw on 18psi on a Mainline dyno, but i used match ported standard manifolds and HKS split dumps and D-Jectro. Good luck and i hope all goes well :(

i would have hoped for more power then that from the -5's? i have 280rwkw @ 15psi on r34 turbos.. but my engine is forged with cams, what turbos would ppl suggest to make 340-360rwkw

Agreed, except the the part about getting the same place at the same time in a $500 and $150,000 car, haha.

I would go for ported and coated standard manifolds if it were me. The only thing that would put me off would be the age of the manifolds themselves and their resistance to cracking, everything has a fatigue life!

i thought that was a bit low on low boost to? maybe because its running rich? same tune as the 316kw run?

my turbos should be here tomorrow will be a couple of weeks befor i get them on tho :)

i just changed the manifolds because i could afford to do it

no other reason but to my untrained eye they look like the flow path is better

Not burning you for using em, it was much more interesting to see the gasket in your pics with the difference size to the turbine housing size (they were markedly different), so i can see why when i was told the turbine housing was the problem in the gtr setup... how its true and stuff.

Car was first tuned at 14psi, then tuned again the next morning with a boost controller installed at 18psi, the first tune was not fully set up till the next day and i did not get a dyno printout for the low boost after its full tune.

good work on the pictures, it is a fun job i have done turbos before and about to put the -5 turbos on my gtr, along with a new gearbox :) lucky i just cleared my hoist for some room.

Wow, that was all really interesting to read. I'll re state. The 'restriction' is there, as you can see by the gasket marks on the standard turbo flange and manifold flanges. The power is not restricted, but the spool response is improved when you match these flanges. In a GTR with bigger turbos I'm finding anything that improves the spool response to be a lot of benefit.

Yeah, I think that's where a lot of people are confused. The manifolds aren't a power restriction so much as a restriction of response.

there is a fair amount a few mm that could be taken off the inlet comp housing to match the gasket did you do this as well?

i guess i would have to measure up the pipe that bolts onto it first....

    • @Haggerty you still haven't answered my question.  Many things you are saying do not make sense for someone who can tune, yet I would not expect someone who cannot tune to be playing with the things in the ECU that you are.  This process would be a lot quicker to figure out if we can remove user error from the equation. 
    • If as it's stalling, the fuel pressure rises, it's saying there's less vacuum in the intake manifold. This is pretty typical of an engine that is slowing down.   While typically is agree it sounds fuel related, it really sounds fuel/air mixture related. Since the whole system has been refurbished, including injectors, pump, etc, it's likely we've altered how well the system is delivering fuel. If someone before you has messed with the IACV because it needed fiddling with as the fuel system was dieing out, we need to readjust it back. Getting things back to factory spec everywhere, is what's going to help the entire system. So if it idles at 400rpm with no IACV, that needs raising. Getting factory air flow back to normal will help us get everything back in spec, and likely help chase down any other issues. Back on IACV, if the base idle (no IACV plugged in) is too far out, it's a lot harder for the ECU to control idle. The IACV duty cycle causes non linear variations in reality. When I've tuned the idle valves in the past, you need to keep it in a relatively narrow window on aftermarket ecus to stop them doing wild dances. It also means if your base idle is too low, the valve needs to open too much, and then the smallest % change ends up being a huge variation.
    • I guess one thing that might be wrong is the manifold pressure.  It is a constant -5.9 and never moves even under 100% throttle and load.  I would expect it to atleast go to 0 correct?  It's doing this with the OEM MAP as well as the ECU vacuum sensor. When trying to tune the base map under load the crosshairs only climb vertically with RPM, but always in the -5.9 column.
    • AHHHH gotchaa, I'll do that once I am home again. I tried doing the harness with the multimeter but it seems the car needed a jump, there was no power when it was in the "ON" position. Not sure if I should use car battery jump starter or if its because the stuff that has been disconnect the car just does send power.
    • As far as I can tell I have everything properly set in the Haltech software for engine size, injector data, all sensors seem to be reporting proper numbers.  If I change any injector details it doesnt run right.    Changing the base map is having the biggest change in response, im not sure how people are saying it doesnt really matter.  I'm guessing under normal conditions the ECU is able to self adjust and keep everything smooth.   Right now my best performance is happening by lowering the base map just enough to where the ECU us doing short term cut of about 45% to reach the target Lambda of 14.7.  That way when I start putting load on it still has high enough fuel map to not be so lean.  After 2500 rpm I raised the base map to what would be really rich at no load, but still helps with the lean spots on load.  I figure I don't have much reason to be above 2500rpm with no load.  When watching other videos it seems their target is reached much faster than mine.  Mine takes forever to adjust and reach the target. My next few days will be spent making sure timing is good, it was running fine before doing the ECU and DBW swap, but want to verify.  I'll also probably swap in the new injectors I bought as well as a walbro 255 pump.
