Tafe Courses/learn About Car Mechanics?

Hi,

I currently have a full time job, but am interested in learning how to rebuild engines and paint cars etc, and was wondering of anyone out there knows of course(s) that teach people these skills

I was just listening to the radio, and they mentioned an add fitting this description perfectly. The place was in St Mary's Sydney, but me being an idiot didnt write down the phone number

I know there are certain tafe courses out there but some require industrial experience, something i cant obtain

There are usually "pre-apprenticeship courses" provided for people who are interested in a certain field of work and want to get their foot in. This may give you some basic knowledge to get an understanding of mechanics.

try these websites (well the one that is relevant to your state). They all have links to the courses provided and a little spiel about what's taught in each one.

Good on you for taking it on your own back to learn about cars, something you are obviously interested in, as opposed to the majority who go in blindly, post silly things on forums and look like twats.

I have done a few adult ed' courses that cover engine rebuild, painting, welding and things - they are run by pretty good people over just a few weeks, so you can pick and choose what you want to learn quickly, then go put it into practice :P

The ones I did were in Tassie, you get a course guide in the paper every few months - tis different from one state to the next, they have all the details on their websites, just google adult education + your state and check it out, they have short courses on heaps of different things. They are usually one night a week for a few weeks, or a few hours on a weekend at a tafe or a college so they are pretty easy to get to.

Dont suppose anybody know anything for Vic?

Been googling so much my fingers hurt.

I cant find anything around engine building / maintanence - only basic courses i.e. oil change...

I'm doing a couple at Chisholm. You can still enroll but they begin within the next two weeks.

Hobby panel beating.

Hobby spray painting.

Small Engines (4 cylinders).

Hobby Vehicle restoration.

Each is 3 hours per week 6pm till 9pm (most are on Tuesday, so you can't do them all at once) and go for about 16 weeks. ~$500 each.

Thanks heaps - think I will do the small engines one - looks like a good start - except for the drive to Frankston every Tuesday from the city :)

Chisholm Frankston is literally 50 meters from the Frankston station if you find driving too difficult.

      Rust repairs completed, doors back on! pretty much totally back together running now. All future repairs will be fiddly wiring getting everything back up to road condition.  hasn’t  taken that long considering the condition I got the sub. note my helpers keeping the back seat warm 😂

      This is the GTR fuel pump. Yellow shows 12V, orange shows earth. The ECU provides the earth to activate the fuel pump relay. The ECU side of teh relay will pull low when the ECU activates. This is the RB20 fuel pump. Almost the same, but a little simpler. You can see I indicated (above) where the 12V line goes down to the RB20 diagram on the overall diagram, whch shows both RB26 and RB20. This is where I show it coming in on the RB20 diagram below. You can see that the dropping resistor is handled differently. When the fuel pump control is not providing earth to the pump, the pump earths through the dropping resistor and thus runs at lower voltage (some is wasted over the resistor) and runs slower. I showed that "not 12V and not quite earth" portion of the wiring in a paler orange. The rest of the wiring that I did not colour on that little section below the pump would be orange when the fuel pump coontroller is providing earth. This drop is handled inside the fuel pump controller in the GTR. Regardless, you can see where 12V is supposed to be, where earth is supposed to be. The key on prime is via the ECU providing the pump for only a few seconds the switching off. You should be able to see that happen.
