Hey guys,

Ive put tomei cams in my current motor, and to my suprise had to buy new buckets as i didnt realize they have a different base circle to stock cams. Turns out im not the only one who's fallen for this trap.

As an example, i thought cams would cost about 1k, but then add the buckets and thats 2k. Now, if HKS (for example) cams are 1400 but dont require buckets then you're about 600 infront overall. Make sense?

So, this thread is to hear peoples experiences with cams - who's had success with what etc but more importantly; Do JUN cams require bucket/shim/whatever changes? I know springs should be changed to match lift - but other than springs, what else needs to be changed?

I need to get cams for the next motor im building, which is underway currently (starting from bottom end first) and would love to just get the right cams this time without spending huge amounts of coin

The base circle dictates what size shim you require to get the clearance right...JUN like to tell you to use a really thick shim to make this clearance right...i dont recommend this...the thicker bucket is always the better more reliable way to go, which is how Tomei do it. PM unique1 and ask him what happens when you run a 'tall' shim instead of the thicker bucket and a reasonable size shim...it will cost you a lot more than doing it right once. Please don't take short-cuts mate...id hate to see you bitten again.

I have held off on cams due to this same shim/bucket issue, cam upgrades dont seem to be such simple "drop in" jobs as the kits suggest.

32mm base circle cams are a 'drop in' nothing else. Id suggest anyone putting 32mm base circle cams in to do a quick bucket clearance check just to make sure its ok.

rb25: Tomei 256deg cams and 8.8mm Tomei springs are a good fit ! :(

rb26 - dunno sorry, but something like the above would probably only be "mild" on a built rb26. 272's then, perhaps.

what turbos, bottom end combo will the head be utilising, plz ?

yeap i've been bitten by using JUN cams with standard buckets and big shims. Destroyed the entire head when the sim popped out of the bucket. Had to do it all again. :)

yeah...another one eh...bummer.

if you look on the JUN website it lists the 'tall' shims they advise you to use. In my opinion this is a dangerous practice and has been proven so with many shim 'pops'. Did you use the JUN offset retainers as they have 2 offset types that take up 0.5mm and 1.5mm clearance respectively?. With a 29mm base circle camshaft if you use the 1.5mm offset retainer and the 1mm thicker Tomei bucket you only have to use around a 0.5mm thicker shim than standard. This is the best way to go if using 29mm base circle cams.

From further investigation it looks like JUN sell a package including buckets etc

i wasnt the person who had issues Dirt it was Public Enemy i think u were thinking of. I run the biggest lift cams Jun make and never had an issue in 2 years+ of over 550rwhp and 8500rpm+, i recently bought a set of Tomei buckets though after hearing of the possible dramas, just to keep my mind at ease.

yes standard buckets and bigger shims from precision shims. the shims are pretty damn thick due to the small base circle so it isnt ideal at all, but it works none the less, but im changing them over just to save a disaster arising after hearing about Public Enemy's dramas.

yeah i used the JUN cam package that includes cams, Titanium retainers and type 2 springs. My understanding was that this package would be put together to be compatible with the base circle of the JUN cams. The shims were huge from memory and destroyed the retainers when they came out and then the retainers cracked the standard lifters which messed up the casting of the head. Lotta $$ porting and polishing that head and it went in the bin :P

Ah well live and learn.

Anyway now using Tomei 272 10.8 cams, Tomei buckets and Tomei type C springs.

So far so good but only a 1000 odd Kms on this step up.

    • I checked the injectors again (1 and 2, since they’re easiest to access) to make sure they weren’t clogged. Even though the entire fuel system had been cleaned, I wanted to be certain. Everything looked clean, so I reinstalled and connected everything. When I started the car to confirm everything was okay, it immediately revved up high, so I shut it off straight away. I checked to see if I’d missed a vacuum hose or something, but everything was connected. On the second attempt, the car ran without the high idle, but I noticed a distinct “compressed air” sound coming from the engine bay. Tracing the sound, I pushed injector #6 forward slightly and the noise stopped — it turned out it wasn’t seated properly, despite the fuel rail being bolted down. While holding it in place, the car idled steadily without stalling and ran for over 5 minutes. At this point, I pulled all six injectors out just in case I hadn’t seated them correctly or dirt had gotten onto the O-rings. Unfortunately, I discovered that I had damaged 3 out of 6 injectors (the OEM 270cc ones) during installation. So yes, this was my fault. Since only the pintle caps were damaged, I’ve ordered a Fuel Injector Service Kit from NZEFI to refurbish them. In the meantime, I reinstalled my new injectors – the car now idles fine for over 15 minutes without stalling. I have not attempted to drive it so far. It’s not perfect yet, as it hesitates when the throttle is pressed, but it’s a big improvement. Unplugging the IACV with the new injectors idles at around 800rpm, even with the IACV screw tightened fully. But this is probably due to tune.
    • I wanted to try and preserve the front bumper as long as possible, they're not cheap and are made to order in Japan. Taking inspiration from my previous K11 Micra build where I made an undertray for the Impul bumper, I did the same for this BN Sports bumper but a little slimmed down.  This time round I only made a 'skid plate' (if that's the correct wording/term) for just the bumper surface area, the Micra version covered the gap like an undertray. Starting off with a sheet of mild steel approx. 0.9mm thick 4ft x 2ft in size. I traced around the bumper, cut it out and cleaned the edges. Luckily I was able to get two halves from one piece of metal In the video I installed it as is, but I've since then I've removed it to spray and add a rubber edging trim. The rubber trim is suitable for 1-2mm and it's a really nice tight fit. The bolts had to be loosened due to the plates being too tight against the bumper, the trim wouldn't push on I used some stainless M6 flat headed bolts for a flusher finish (rather than hex heads poking down), I believe this style fastener is used for furniture too incase you struggle to source some. The corner's are a little wider, but this may be an advantage incase I get close to bumping it  The front grill got some attention, finally getting round to repairing it. Upon removal one fixing pulled itself out of the plastic frame, one side is M8 that fixes inside of the frame, where as the other side is M5. Not knowing I could get replacements, I cut down an M8 bolt, threaded it inside the frame along with a decent amount of JB Weld.  The mesh was replaced to match the bumper. One hole on the bonnet/hood had to be drilled out to 8mm to accommodate the new stud, once the glue had set it could be refitted. I think the reason the grill was double meshed was to hide the horn/bonnet latch (which makes sense) but I much prefer it matching the bumper Bumper refitted and it's looking much better IMO The Youtube video can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVZP35io9MA
