hey pplz,

just a quick topic!

Id like to no if any one has had any problems with converting a SR20 into there car?

Im looking at converting a SR20 into my R31 skyline, but just wont to make sure if theres any problems with this happening like engine mounts and diff changes and all that!

Would love to hear all the problems that happened through the build/convertion!

Oh and also ne problems with the engine that will need to done, in order for it to run soundly and be able to maintain easly!!!

Cheers

Do a search, there was a topic like this a few weeks ago. Personally I say do it, but I'm a fan of doing things differently.

As for the engine, buy a well looked after example, low kms and you should be sweet. Pull it apart and have a quick look before you put it in just to make sure it's all good.

Good luck mate, let us know how you go.

yeh cheers

well ill be getting the engine rebuilt i think which would be the best option to start!

personally i wish i could do the conversion myself but where im living has no place to do it and me sisters dad would go nuts if i was to do it here lol

so my only option is to take to my mate in malaga thats a mechanical engineer!! some people might no him as BRIFFA ENGINEERING!

But yeh i bought it off a guy that was forced to sell it by the counsel!

Ive done a few SR conversions into various things now. Awesome motor. Im not sure whether it will fit or not? But try maybe putting the S13 crossmember into the R31, that way engine mounts etc are done. With my R34 we put the S13 crossmember in, had to fiddle a bit with the power steering lines a bit but it went straight in. Gear stick come through the hole perfect, needed to make some extensions for the gbox crossmember that was it. Also will need a custom tail shaft. The original pwr steer pump bolted up to the SR as did the alternator. So the mechanical side isnt that hard.

The wiring is another matter, probly be able to adapt the R31 engine harness for alt, starter, oil pressure etc onto the SR with no problems. But the ECU wiring is always the hardest, PLMS developments do a full pre-wire harness that then leaves you with 4 wires to hook up.

  • 2 weeks later...

yeh well ive come to a total decision and its now gona be a rb20 conversion cos me best mates brother took the rb20 out and put it into his s13 so now im just gona put the rb20 bak in and go from there!

Jiva is lookin at sellin his rb20 to me so it will fit straight in cos the original mounts are still there from the old engine!

Im still gona get it done through my mech cos hell pass over an engineer cert afta its done so then i can register it!

Itll get started within the next, say 2 weeks YAY lol

So ill post up the hole conversion info and where its at wen i get pics and info

but il deff keep everyone informed for sure!!!

Just a question! If i was to get the rb20 bored out would the rb25 head fit to make it a hybrid??

I just really make it unique and good performance wise!!!!

Yeh, RB20DET would be a better bet for the R31. Heaps of the boys are running silver tops and loving it.

I wouldn't advise getting a RB20 bored out and a RB25 head put on. Too much mucking around. Would cost too much. Rather just get a RB25 or a get a 25 head and slap it on a RB30 bottom end for some real power. People usually stroke their RB20's to RB24's if they have spent big coin on turbo's and ecu's etc for the RB20. You are starting fresh. So just save urself some money and hassel.

RB25 or a RB25/30 aka RB30DET.

I wouldn't bother too much with the R31. They are classic cars. I love them. But when the tailshafts, diffs and gearbox's etc start breaking from increased power and the fact it doesn't have IRS are bad. So I would get a R32 or just do a mild build with the R31.

That is what I have learnt with my two skylines

:/

GTS 2 on same gearbox , tailshaft and factory LSD diff lasted 16months before we went to 2way and done drift , drags and circuit work ..

yeh but after already asking around for an rb30 det seemed like it was like a rare engine unless i had it imported by someone!!!

But ive come to the conclusion that ill be thrown in a rb20 and going from there!

Hopefully it should get started with in a month!!!

Ill be making a pull thread with buuild and pics for everyone, so i can hear everyones opinions and views on the car and install!!!

An RB30DET is a hybrid.. they were never made by Nissan.. you have to build it yourself.

Also the RB30E/T was never released in any JDM vehicle, so they are super rare over there. There is a Jap company that specialises in twincam 30's using RB30E/T blocks but the rest of the 3L stuff in Japan tends to be spacer type setups for 26 blocks.

I love my 30DET :D

I think everyone in WA is extremely aware of your feeling on your 30det bubba:P

How much did yours cost all up? How factory can/does it look?

How much difference does it make to fuel consumption/torque/hp in your case?

What supporting mods are necessary? Obv ECU.

Are you running a 20 or 25 box? Would the 20 box suffice on a mild power application?

I'm considering a swap, but having difficulty justifying the costs and effort involved, starting to think I might just leave it with the 20 and do other things.

    • The wiring diagram for the R33 RB25 is freely available, and is essentially the same same as most other RBs (just with differences as to which pin # does which job). To get the ECU to power up, you just need to provide power to the ECCS relay, and have the other power feeds that come in from the top left of the wiring diagram (wrt the ECU) that give perma power to the fuel pump relay, the ECU itself, etc etc, all connected. When you put power on all these it will just come to life. It's pretty clear from the diagram what needs to happen. Just follow the lines from the 12V + supply stuff in the top left over towards the ECU. I've even posted snips of such diagrams (not for vanilla 25, I think for Neo and 26) to various threads here in the last few months, talking about what it takes to get the fuel pump and FPCM up and going. Search these up and they will help get you started on doing the same with the vanilla 25 diagram. Hell, for all I know, I've done the same with that one in years past and have forgotten.
    • Yep...so unless someone posts up the answer you will need to probe from the ECU connector to the dash plug with a multi meter in continuity mode to trace the wires.  Note the ECU has multiple - and + (and across different key settings - Battery, IGN and Start) and most likely the power is fed from the connector(s) that is normally near the left hand headlight.
    • Thanks Duncan, I am actually just trying to get the Rb turning and running with the RB25DET S2 original loom itself  I am just trying to get it going outside the body and not thinking about the S15 or trying to match anything to the S15 loom at all I am only trying to see if anyone has done this and what pin they found to be the ignition trigger and ECU+/- on the dash connector, that's about it. Thanks
    • Hi Guys, Does anyone know any aftermarket part numbers for a starter motor to suit the VQ25DET? I can find lots of alternative part number for the VQ35DE, which I assume would fit, but there is a lot of conflicting information out there. Thanks..
    • I don't understand how this hasn't boiled down to - Upgrade the turbo when you have everything required. ECU, injectors, fuel pump, turbo, etc. Do it all at once.  If you don't have everything required, just enjoy the car as it is and keep saving up your pennies.
