I saw talk of an Overlay for the standard screen. Is this still an option? is it USB? if so, does it have a driver for windows to act like a mouse?

I have searched for USB overlays, they are really cheap ($55) but they are not quite the right size. Still looking.

Obviously I am planning on a Carputer. For Navigation, I previously use TomTom on my windows phone. I also have found freeware that basically lets me control and view the phone's screen on a computer, via the USB into my phone; sorta like remote desktop / VNC. Also, by plugging in my phone over USB, I can also use my phone as a wireless internet interface, so my Carputer will have internet also (ie google maps with traffic)

I have also found that JayCar sell the 12v power box for a std pc. So I plan to try an old 1Ghz P4 I have lying around.

My problems I have at this time are:

1. How I will handle the shutdown / power-down of the PC. Also the strange power conditions during engine startup.

2. A single USB2 cable is 5m max, USB1 is 3m (my old PC is USB1) It will need to reach the screen for the Overlay, and I also want another one to pop out just behind the screen to plug in my phone.

3. Will start with the Std old HDD in the PC, but look for an SDD, do not expect the HDD to last too long, especially with my low profile tyres.

4. The Overlay, its install, the usb cable length. Will use a trackball system if I can't sort this out at first.

5. The VGA to NTSC conversion. Resolution? running XP at 640x480 with the current screen as output.

6. Hope to use the ODBII cable into the PC later, but a little concerned as to cable length as PC will be in Boot. Also sceptical regarding the display on the tiny low-res OEM screen.

Thats where I am at now. Also sent an email to Chris (cant do PM's yet) regarding the AUX cable / adapter into the TV in the boot; which is where I plan to put the PC.

Any comments or further problems I may encounter please feel free to put up.

Iive installed a carpc on mine too. G33K is right, the only properly working obdii scan tool is BlaZt. All gauges work only with NDS (Nissan Data Scan) 1.3. It comes a as a bundle when you buy the adapter.

I'm beta testing the 1.4 now and man, it's got soo much potential. Can even unlock control your interior lighting even turn off the beeps. All from the software. The only downside for me, is that it can't read codes off my tcu/tcm since i got a gt8.

I'm in Perth and willing to help anyone to install a car pc on their Vs if they're keen ;)

Thanks.

My one is working flawlessly, however, i've upgraded to the TPMS that i posted a while back so i don't use it for scans as much anymore.

Other than that - the CarPC is a charm! <3

    • Like a big hood scoop, and massive whiney boy supercharger? Think he'll sell it to me at my offer above? I could probably get it to $75 if he needs a little more convincing 馃槢
    • Salut Frederick. Belle 370z. Welcome to SAU!
    • Hey, it's me! Though honestly, if I had 20M in my bank account tomorrow, I would not want to be rid of my car all of the sudden - Which makes me think this is money stuff, not "I actually hate car" stuff. I'd probably double down and buy even more trinkets and fun things for it. If this is not you, then sell it cheaper. It will sell at a certain price after all.
    • This is the LCA mount reloctaion kit. Self explanatory in its description. https://au.gktech.com/products/s13-180sx-r32-subframe-anti-squat-reduction-weld-in-kit?_pos=62&_fid=1e812d392&_ss=c These are the alloy subframe bush inserts that I am using. I like them. https://au.gktech.com/products/rear-subframe-slip-in-collars?_pos=29&_fid=1e812d392&_ss=c Alternatively, if you have original and shitty bushes, you might consider outright replacement with poly. https://au.gktech.com/products/polyurethane-rear-subframe-bushes?_pos=28&_fid=1e812d392&_ss=c I would also higly recommend that you look into adjustable RUCAs and tension rods, so you can sort out the camber and bump steer behaviour, especially if the car will be any more than ~15mm lower than stock. I would also highly recommend the GKTech FUCAs, although you really should do some research and learning on the subjetc of R32 FUCAs before making any decisions. All of this will be criticaly difficult to get through a T脺V inspection too, if that happens to be relevant to you. Note that if you do install the relocation kit, you will absolutely have to replace the associated bushes with spherical joints (you can read all about that on the product page) or upgrade the LCAs also.
