hi guys,

i will be running garrett -10's for my new rb26/30 build & have been researching cams & what would be best...after talking to a few guys in the 'know how' the recommendation has been 270-272degree with 10.5mm lift (IN/EX)

some have also stated tomei poncams are good for my application BUT i dont want to fall short of my goal @ 400+awkw due to wrong cam choice

i was told to stick with the tomei range as they carry the same base circle as stock cams, is this the case as i want to get away with just cams & springs (my engine builder stated this is the way to go)

...besides, tomei seems to be significantly cheaper than hks or jun

regards

marko

anything with more lift that 9.15(i think) in tomei you need to buy buckets/lifters aswell. +500 bucks..

can anyone confirm this?

if this is the case where i need buckets/lifters for anything over 9.15mm im looking at approx. 2k+ in parts for my head (cams, springs, retainers, buckets, lifters)

maybe i should stick with tomei type b poncams - then the question is "will this get me to 400awkw with head porting?"

can anyone confirm this?

it will get you 400kw without head porting Marko.

My old near stock 26...467KW...2530's...260 9.15mm tomei poncams.

This was the old engine that was all Nissan except pistons, rod bolts and camshafts.

Pick your rev limit and buy the biggest lift cams for that duration. Any cam with a BC smaller than stock will require shims and or thicker buckets and or offset retainers.

Who is building this engine??

Shouldn't you be directing your questions their way??

i did talk to my engine builder & he suggested that i confirm what he believes which is that i would need only the cams, springs & retainers

if i go with approx 270degree cams what are my options if i stick with the same base circle. my findings was that only tomei offer the same BC?

interesting about tomei poncams - yrs ago when i had my aust delivered gtr with poncams (260) & gtrs kit it made 362awkw @ 22psi, the new owner fitted bigger cams & cracked 430awkw @ 28psi

Your engine builder asked you to confirm what he believes...is he for real?

made 60kw more with cams...but also 6psi more boost, id say a higher rev limit, different fuel, different dyno operator and probably different atmospheric conditions. Not really that surprising.

260 degree 9.15 lift would be the largest duration you can go without changing the lifters or the other way with shimming??

that is from tomei again..

Whod you end up going with the engine build? pm me if you want to keep it provate or whatever?

im looking at either harris engines (revesby) OR st marys engines (st marys)

im leaning towards st marys engines, good work & very competitively priced...who were u looking at?

i need warranty & receipt for tax purposes :nyaanyaa:

so what is the general consensus with cams, i.e. if we compare tomei 260's/9.15mm to tomei 270's/10.5mm:

what would be the difference in peak power approx?

im guessing the 260's will provide better midrange?

bang for buck?

    • The wiring diagram for the R33 RB25 is freely available, and is essentially the same same as most other RBs (just with differences as to which pin # does which job). To get the ECU to power up, you just need to provide power to the ECCS relay, and have the other power feeds that come in from the top left of the wiring diagram (wrt the ECU) that give perma power to the fuel pump relay, the ECU itself, etc etc, all connected. When you put power on all these it will just come to life. It's pretty clear from the diagram what needs to happen. Just follow the lines from the 12V + supply stuff in the top left over towards the ECU. I've even posted snips of such diagrams (not for vanilla 25, I think for Neo and 26) to various threads here in the last few months, talking about what it takes to get the fuel pump and FPCM up and going. Search these up and they will help get you started on doing the same with the vanilla 25 diagram. Hell, for all I know, I've done the same with that one in years past and have forgotten.
    • Yep...so unless someone posts up the answer you will need to probe from the ECU connector to the dash plug with a multi meter in continuity mode to trace the wires.  Note the ECU has multiple - and + (and across different key settings - Battery, IGN and Start) and most likely the power is fed from the connector(s) that is normally near the left hand headlight.
    • Thanks Duncan, I am actually just trying to get the Rb turning and running with the RB25DET S2 original loom itself  I am just trying to get it going outside the body and not thinking about the S15 or trying to match anything to the S15 loom at all I am only trying to see if anyone has done this and what pin they found to be the ignition trigger and ECU+/- on the dash connector, that's about it. Thanks
    • Hi Guys, Does anyone know any aftermarket part numbers for a starter motor to suit the VQ25DET? I can find lots of alternative part number for the VQ35DE, which I assume would fit, but there is a lot of conflicting information out there. Thanks..
    • I don't understand how this hasn't boiled down to - Upgrade the turbo when you have everything required. ECU, injectors, fuel pump, turbo, etc. Do it all at once.  If you don't have everything required, just enjoy the car as it is and keep saving up your pennies.
