Greedy, Plazmaman, Hks, Cooling-pro Etc Need Cooler Asap

Recommended Posts

hi guys...

i need some advice from ppl who knows most about intercoolers, i needed to get one ASAP as i cant boost my car unless i have a bigger FMIC on my R34 GTT..

Greedy, plazmaman, HKS, Nismo, etc. whats the best one to get and easiest to install??

im not goin to run my car over 260 rwkw... so intercoolers that can handle between 250-260 rwkw would be fine..

and whats the difference between Bar and Plate or Tube and Fin? which is better??

my budget is around $600-700 for full intercooler kit with pipes including...

any advice???

thanx guys...

any shop from melbourne where i can check some intercoolers??

I'm running a HDi (Hybrid) intercooler which will handle more power than I am going to throw at it. I reckon they're in your price range. I've had no problems at all, but there's not much that go wrong anyway.

I can't remember if the stock IC handles 250kw or not, but I think it should take your power levels. It will deal with a bit more boost on the stock turbo no worries at least. FMIC's look good so why not do it anyway ey. They are defectable when used with a POD or if the IC piping is cored through a structural section of body work though.

I believe that bar and plate intercoolers have lower pressure drop when compared to tube and fin of the same specs. Tube and fin intercoolers overcome this by adding more rows and/or increasing the row size. I think generally tube and fin come out on top because they flow better inside and out when they increase the specs. I am not 100% sure about this but that's my understanding.

"I'm running a HDi (Hybrid) intercooler which will handle more power than I am going to throw at it." <--- Hybrid intercooler apparently are a lot harder to find, i read in some forums..and a lot of hybrid fakes claiming as well..so how would i knw which one is legit??

"I can't remember if the stock IC handles 250kw or not, but I think it should take your power levels." <--- stock SMIC apparently not safe to do, after a 2-3 rounds of full dyno and upping the boost the pipes and IC itself will go red hot and will cause a lot of problem, thats why i have to change my stockies coz originally i wanted to leave the stock smic and boost my car up with my new Greedy Profec B-spec II EBC...

700, trust kit, access autoworks, trade place vermont, sponser on here

thanx ryan,

i know access autoworks...i went there and got my STRI boost gauge and my Greedy Profec b-spec II..

i m still usin a stock intercooler on my r32gtr, have a hks r-type along the way. cuttently, i m pullin 320Kw on 1.8bar boost. no probs. for the pod issue, just custom a box arnd it. or go arc if yur feelin rich! haha

Edited by ujin

youll find pretty much any is fine

GTR

hybrid

chinese brander

or jap brand

all just depends on price. your best bet is to goto a local workshop in your area and ask for a price for a FMIC supplied and fitted

i have no idea where you live so ill pick some workshops around melbourne

eas

dr drift

chasers

race pace

re customs

any of those should be able to supply and fit a decent FMIC for a decent price

and the core etc will be fine for your power levels

ujin, i think all skyline GTR's IC are more superior compare to GTsT's and GTT's...and yeh i do have a custom pod box around my pod...

How much boost you want to run?

You have a R34 GTT, the Side Mount Intercooler should be fine for just over 200 kW's.

As for Bar and Plate or Tube and Fin, I can't remember exactly but I read in one of my magazines that one is better for air flow and the other is better for cooling.

For example, air flow would be great for drag racing as you are only on the track for less than 10 (give or take a few seconds) on the track, while the intercooler for cooling would be better off for circuit, drift and rally racing as you are on the track for longer.

That's just off the top of my head from memory...

hi skyline, i only wanted to run 11 psi high boost...i have another topic at FORCED INDUCTION its inregards to stock SMIC handling a boost 11 psi...maybe you can shade some lights off for me..i didnt want to have 2 topics here as well..please check it out for me..

thanx

Yeah so you want to run 11 Psi (+0.7 Bar) which is what a GTR would run...

From memory GTS-T's / GTT's run about 7 Psi (+0.5 Bar)

Correct me if I am wrong...

You should be fine with your Standard SMIC, as that's what ppl with R32 and R33 GTS-T's can use (the R34 GTT) to upgrade to to run just over 200 kW's.

Best to get your Boost controller installed, at the same time run a dyno tune just to make sure.

RE Customs and Racepace (just to name a few garages) can do it for you.

youll be talking about aftermarket ECUs by that stage and as a safe bet id still get a FMIC. although its getting pretty cold these days so maybe you wont have a problem.

i went with a home brand intercooler which set me back 435bux (far out the good days wen the aussie $$$ was doing good) and now i regret it. im aiming for 300+ onwards and i wish i went with a proper made jap cooler. just the quality and efficiency allround is better.

you also need to make a decision on weather you wanna risk a defect. because if you dont youll need a return flow cooler. which narrows your choicees down even more.

youll also need to motify the front bar to fit any sort of FMIC unless you get a aftermarket bar.

ultimately it comes down to a few things, answer these quesitons and we can give you almost a spot on answer.

Budget (how much do you want to spend on a cooler)

ultimate Power Aim? (try to think if youll go after market turbo)

Willing to Risk Defects?

GL mate.......i remember when i 1st started with my skyline....haha the good days.....

Yeah sure.

So what's the limit for the SMIC before upgrading to FMIC on a R34 GTT?

As he does not want to go over 260 kW's...

He still can go FMIC but no intake mods... (Upgrade the panel filter inside the stock air box and he could get away with that...)

His budget is around $600 - $700, I would say that could buy you a very good intercooler.

Maybe upgrading to a GTR FMIC would help as they are good for over 300 kW's...

1.Budget (how much do you want to spend on a cooler) <--cooler $600-700 but have to be a good brand as well..

2.ultimate Power Aim? (try to think if youll go after market turbo) <--not considering getting an aftermarket turbo yet so would not go beyond 200 rwkw..not planning to upgrade turbos, not in a few yrs...its just a daily car for me for now...

3.Willing to Risk Defects? <--only if i have to change my SMIC..yes i would if given no choice...

    • This. The R34 handbrake icon DOES come up when the brake fluid level is low. You might be sitting right on that threshhold. I have been down this diagnosis path and this was the solution (and it was pretty much as full as your picture is to begin with).
    • Unfortunately the cavaet to that is that while any scan tool should be able to read the code, the workshop will need a consult plug to OBD socket adapter. You don't have a location on your profile, where are you based?
    • @Haggerty this is your red flag. In MAP based ECU's the Manifold pressure X RPM calculation is how the engine knows it is actually...running/going through ANY load. You are confusing the term 'base map' with your base VE/Fuel table. When most people say 'base map' they mean the stock entire tune shipped with the ECU, hopefully aimed at a specific car/setup to use as a base for beginning to tune your specific car. Haltech has a lot of documentation (or at least they used to, I expect it to be better now). Read it voraciously.
    • I saw you mention this earlier and it raised a red flag, but I couldn't believe it was real. Yes, the vacuum signal should vary. It is the one and only load signal from the engine to the ECU, and it MUST vary. It is either not connected or is badly f**ked up in some way.
    • @Haggerty you still haven't answered my question.  Many things you are saying do not make sense for someone who can tune, yet I would not expect someone who cannot tune to be playing with the things in the ECU that you are.  This process would be a lot quicker to figure out if we can remove user error from the equation.
