Hello all,

First post for me, so a quick cheer to all the great people on this site for all their time and passion dedicated to the cause.

So i flew to Melbourne last friday and brought back a sexy R33 GTR. The previous owners have really loved the car, condition is excellent and runs like a dream - the stock 180kph speedo being the only limit on a very fun trip back from vic. I wanted to share my experience of getting the car registered in SA as I had read and heared alot about my iminent wallet pain, better known as the saga of "getting a skyline through regency".

The car: R33 GTR, black, GT400R full body kit, carbon fiber front lip, Apexi Power FC computer, Apexi Intake filter, greddy turbo timer, aftermarket cam gears and timing belt, x-force twin front pipe, Kakimoto full cat back straight through exhaust with 4.5" canon muffler, 8000k headlights, 17" long champ in-dish rims, remote ignition and alarm.

I spoke to many people about the registration process and the story looked to be doom and gloom. On the day, I hid the turbo timer below the plastic under the steering wheel and chopped off the Apexi FC computer hand held terminal (as I couldnt hide it, but can re-solder). The canon muffler is loud, I assumed to be instantly defectable. I drove to regency and was redirected to the "new" inspection place round the corner. I filled in a form before driving my car into the shed where some bloke started to inspect my car. I spoke a couple of sentences to the guy before I was asked to wait away from the car (like everyone else). He went over it quite carefully, looking with a torch inside the engine and a bit inside the car for a good 10 minutes. The engine was not running except when I drove it in (I had the keys anyway). After about 10 minutes he called me over, gave me a form and said to "drive back to regency where they will take all my money" and made a wise crack about "not doing anything stupid, like adding a turbo timer". I assume he found my turbo timer but was in a good mood, or just a nice guy. Drove back to regency, spent $600~ and got a SA registered GTR with 3 months rego. :/

At the same time as my car was going through, a R34 GTR was also, but I didn't see the driver at regency afterwards even though her inspection started before mine. If you're out there, hope all went well for you too.

Hope this helps anyone else considering bringing in a godzilla from interstate.

Almost forgot, a big thanks to Han for the car, cheers mate.

hahahaha Welcome aboard Josh and enjoy your stay

Please read the rules about doing different things on these boards and you will find you have no troubles with the mods

and chopped off the Apexi FC computer hand held terminal (as I couldnt hide it, but can re-solder).

you prolly now know if you had followed the end of the cable it just unplugs :/ major DOH! moment, but as you say can be soldered

Lucky! Very lucky. My experience wasn't so good. As for the PowerFC hand controller, like Steve said it can just be unplugged :/

No matter, easy fix, just take care of her and welcome to the world of GTR ownership, it's awesome! :)

Very nice! You didnt happen to had driven down Victoria Rd, Taperoo earlier today? Heard a very beastly sound and turn my head around to take a glance at a black R33 GTR! :)

Haha yes that was me. I think I saw your white GTS-T? And a nice stagea also. Small world adelaide.

TBH I didn't trace the Apexi cable far enough obviously, but soldering is not a problem for me... slightly doh :/

Yeah mine would of been one of the two white ones out front. Had quite a few of us SAU-ers there for a BBQ to raise money towards the new SAU-SA car club - should of quickly chucked a u-turn come by say hello, somethings gotta be up when theres quite a few Skylines and Stageas parked around the front lol

Ah damn mate. I said to my gf that I thought there was a nissan convention going on (albeit slightly sarcasticly :/ ), hence why I did drive pass a second time, but yeh just didn't stop.

I will stop by next time for sure.

I saw you too lol.

I was in the Black R32 that was going to the opposite way to you, and yes I checked your car out haha. As a matter of fact, I got so excited I was thinking of cracking a U-Turn and going back to the house and saying did you see that?!?!

The $600 was just the basics, stamp duty, rego, ctp, inspection fee (only $40~) etc. A pleasant suprise really as I was expecting much wallet pain.

I saw your r32 too, looks nice mate, such a light quick vehicle must be great fun to drive.

I have read 2 acronyms on this site that I can't google the answer so far: OAA and CAA. Can anyone elaborate please?

i emailed SA roads about interstate rego and got told

"This imported vehicle has already been complied in Victoria, therefore we do not require a 'Full Road Worthy Inspection' in South Australia before registration can be issued."

Even tho its unregod over in vic i jst need a ID inspection, but everyone else is saying i will need too go full inspection at Regency.

So im thinking twice about getn this 32 now.

Yeh the information is confusing - many people with many different outcomes.

When I went to register I was sent for an ID inspection, but when I got to the ID they had a thorough look through my car like a roadworthy. Even after it all, I really don't know what are the formal checks required for a vehicle for the ID inspection. I know they looked at all ID numbers on the engine and car to check they all match (as I have a copy of the form they fill in) and I suspect if they see anything obviously illegal then they have the power to defect - but that's just a guess.

If the car isn't too heavily modified I see no issue bringing it into the state. If it is modified, accept that you may need to undo the mods to get it through regency.

yeah i did that with the 32, its not that hard. but mine was rego'd in VIC (and still is, despite having SA rego now aswell...lol). just went to melbs, did the paper work, called up vicroads to check vehicle status etc. drove it back and took it to ellemsia ct lonsdale i think (no need for the strict regency), which moved over from next to sturt road cop shop. just fill out a form, they do computer check and a brief look at your car.

i got told to remove my tint...which was annoying but yeah all good, dint have to pay a cent (the 32 was fairly stock tho)

call up places! for the cost of a std/local call u can save the hassles!

good luck mate

I have taken 2 cars through regency for ID inspections. Neither were imports (well technically they were but sold here new) and didnt have any troubles.

One of them was turbo, zorst, low (and I mean low) and had a warped roof, and went through no probs. The other one had a scribbled out engine number but they found another one on there and showed me (had been issued another one). Needless to say, was an easy experience both times.

Good luck with yours!

    • Biggest thing is you're okay!   It sounds like between the accident, and the drive home, it was a pretty torturous trip again! On the bright side, you took the opportunity to enjoy the event more from the perspective of a spectator, than as an entrant!   Sad to see so much damage to the car. It really has taken a HUGE hit in the front end. If/when you choose to repair, hopefully the rails are straight (At least from shock tower backwards). Hopefully the extra cage coming through there has save most of the chassis rails, and HOPEFULLY saved the motor too. Best of luck when you eventually get motivated to start pulling it down to check it all out
    • Sounds more like what Brad said, that it's mainly transfer. What pad bed in procedure did you use, and did you replace/machine the rotors, or just swap pads?
    • The stutter is almost entirely in the pedal. I don't feel the brakes release and reapply as you would with ABS engaging but the pedal feels that way, without the brakes releasing. It only lasts for less than a second and the pedal is fine again. It's hard to explain, sorry.  I'll get under this weekend and just double check everything is tight. Fluid is at max where I left it.
    • What bedding in procedure did you use?   When you say stutter, what exactly do you mean? Like it feels like someone letting go of the brakes momentarily and regrabbing them again to get you to stop? Re-reading your post, and that is what it kind of makes me think you're explaining, like theres a little bit of a jolt, likely just as you're reaching a stop. I've only had this issue once. And if its caused by what caused mine, you will want to get the car up on stands again and check it over. Mine was a case of a caliper mounting bolt coming out and letting the caliper rotate on the other remaining bolt and gave play in a wheel as it came to a stop. But not every stop either!
    • Yeop... binned it   This will be a summary will not many pics atm and cbf  Fixed the samsonas - it was totally munched Put a new precision 7675 T4 on with proper split pulse mani Got to Sydney to get to car - drove to canberra to get racecar - drive back to sydney that night Next day all day at Plasmaman putting on new clamps cleaning some things up and adding another large engine oil cooler sitting at the rear above diffuser to keep things cooler Next day - Tuesday - on Dyno - killer wikid awesome pumped out really good numbers - more mid range and on lower boost levels Wednesday - first prac - all day again getting the suspension right - had to borrow front suspension again - out do a lap come in - out do a lap - in - what i had just couldnt handle the load at the more consistent higher speeds - got a lap in at the end of the day that was pretty reasonable  Put it this way that lap wouldve had me in 4th in Pro am for the whole event - with only 700 hp and used tyres Thurs first official prac day - lap out warm up - then entered a hotlap with above setting and 80% effort took corners 1,2,3 and into 4 car felt awesome -  rear came around out of nowhere bang into the wall near front on at whatever 140 kmph Done, over, gone Just one of those how did that happen apparently as all indications show nothing out of the ordinary Got to spend the rest of the time at the event like I hadnt done before - was actually Ok mainly as I had my family and my boy is 9 and got treated like a rockstar Long trip home, lost a trailer wheel in nowhere land, X5 airbag suspension gave up half way across nullabour and rode on bumps stops (its now completely fine) had to do a 19 hr drive day on day 3 as accommodation got screwed up so just had to keep driving till found a town with some Now to reassess - hopefully the motor and other things are OK but yet to be seen too. There is no easy fix there is no i'll just order that part and get it sent - we'll have a talk to people see what can happen and what the go is but at minimum its rebuild from scratch struts forward and alot of time effort and $ should and if I return and if but maybe/ when  I have the cage tied into the front strut towers - if I didnt have that things couldnt been worse you can say its just a front end but if you know what goes into these cars... you'll know what that actually means in reality   Car was very fast. Disappointing we just didnt get to show it Effort doesnt win you races though     Apparently this is motorsport !
