Have a mate who just got a new system put in his car, sounds amazing but the alpine dvd player wont play them unless the handbrake is on. Whats the reasoning behind this, i know theres something connected to the handbrake, is it a grounder? Like the system will only play dvds when it detects a ground there? If so can it be tricked by putting it onto a permanent ground?

yeah he wants to know how to get around that i guess, maybe play filmclips on the road?

Mate, the device is there for a reason........

But if he must have it on my driving, ground the handbrake wire, or connect it to the ground wire on the back of the DVD player and you're done.

no other reason than that. driver shouldn't be watching any movies/videos while a vehicle is in motion. you and your friend would've seen it if you read the manual for the dvd player. there'll be a warning in there. i get a similar warning msg when i turn my navman on.

i have my handbrake wire connected to a switch.

and to answer your question, no the handbrake light won't be on constantly, if you disconnect the dvd's handbrake wire from the handbrake itself.

by law that wire has to be connected to the handbreak if you get pulled up by police then can ask u to prove it and if its not connect can fine you, yes u can bypass it by just grounding the wire to any ground and even put a switch in there but like i said it is by law. just my 2 cents, i know if i had a dvd player i would bypass it and put a switch in.

wrong - there is nothing you can be fined for as their are no specific laws relating to in car dvd's.

some new car are fitted from factory with screens that function at speed... They simply have a menu to either enable or disable the screen when the car is in motion. Sometimes the menu's are user accessable, sometimes they are dealer accessable with a scan tool.

To, the original poster, just ground the wire from the dvd to the handbrake.

And if you ever run up the back of someone cos u were watching a movie, well, never admit it, you'll be screwed on insurance.

Just to clear up some mis-information. There are some ADR's and registration legislation that doesn't allow a VDU (Visual Display Unit) to function while driving. You could get a defect if you can't prove it cannot display a picture while the handbrake is off.

The exception and this is straight out of the ADR's etc is that you can have a VDU visible to the driver while driving if it is or is part of a GPS system.

i got a dvd head unit installed today, i didnt ask or anything and the dude said to cut the wire to the handbrake and attatch it to a screw, and he said he cant do it coz insurance reasons. i cant think if it was him or my friend or brother 2day that said if u ever crash re connect it for insurance reasons....

and with watching em while driving it woudl prob b a little hard but would b nice for ya passengers i recon... wat head unit u get anyway mate? and how u finding it?

My friend has an 07 infiniti g35 sedan with the GPS/DVD system and it will play dvd's but only when the vehicle is in park.

Some car owners believe that a car DVD player is a pure waste for them and it is also illegal to drive a car while watching the DVD player. However, things are different if they drive a car with other passengers. They can easily get their passengers entertained if they have a car DVD player. Also they can let their car DVD player carry the GPS Navigation system which is indispensable for modern society.

      Sounds like you've got an interesting adventure ahead here with local support if you have trouble! My guess is that, unboosted, you will be OK with a small upgrade like -9. What will happen is that once the stock ECU sees more airflow than it expects it will add a heap of fuel and pull a heap of timing to be safe because it can't understand how it could get that much air without there being an issue. You will see clouds of black smoke and it won't pull hard through the midrange and top end. So, overall it will be a bit frustrating but should be OK. If you are still nervous set the base timing back 2o through the CAS, but it will be even more sluggish everywhere. As said above through...this is not my guarantee your engine won't be blown into a million pieces, leaving you looking for very hard to find parts A better idea is get a computer with logging ASAP, wire in a wide band O2 sensor and a use remote tuner. I've done multiple cars this way and while it is not as good as a specific tune on a dyno they can get it 90% right. I'd suggest if you can afford an R33 GTR these days you can afford an ECU and tune. And if you can't afford that you sure won't be able to afford the rebuild if it goes bad in the meantime,.

      Yeah it would be nice if someone took the time to put that sort of information together, but there are a lot of variations in looms. I think you are making this way hard for yourself if you just want to get it running....sourcing an SR20 with the right wiring will be a billion times easier than matching the RB loom to an S15 chassis. If you do end up going this way, you just need to trace every wire in the loom with a multimeter, 95% of them will go to a location you can confirm at the ECU.....and then post it up for the next person who needs it

      Just top it up with water, and keep a general idea of how much you added. It is normal for water to be pushed into and pulled out of the reservoir through the cap, and it should not be more than half full or it will be likely to overflow when hot. Any decent mechanic can do a pressure test of the cooling system to confirm if you have a leak. Keep in mind if it is only leaking a little and when hot it may well evaporate before you see it hit the ground

      I'd ask the shop what they used and use that. Mixing coolants is sometimes OK, sometimes not, and you have know the details of each coolant to know whether it's a good idea or not.
