I am fairly familiar with most aspects of cars except this area. If i ever considered gettin a colour change to some whacked out mix i wanna be informed about whats goin on. Does anyone know of any good resources (preferably accessible on the net) that i can get information about mixes, kinds of paint and steps needed for a re-spray etc.

I mainly interested in learning about all the different types, like pearls and those weird colour changing paints (i.e. chameleon).

Has anyone got some pics aswell of examples of kinds of effects (preferably on a skyline) etc.

Cheers,

Tom

Basic process is they would take parts off like rear bar front bar wing etc. They would sand it back using a wet sander to either the bottom layer or to bare metal (bare metal costs more), If you want a professional job they would take the engine out and paint inside the engine bay.

The pearls are like mixing colours say white pearl there would obviously be white but also a tint of silver.

If you are really interested go talk to a painter im sure they would tell you the entire process and what they can do.

Yeah i was trying to find out as much as i could before actually going to a painter but yeah thanx for the info.

Does 5k include everything (paint labour etc.)??

Can you choose your own pearls and colours or will only some colours mix?

(sorry i really know sh!t all about paint and stuff)

Anyway if anyones got more pictures of anymore styles it would be appreciated if you post

Cheers

yeh i would think 5k includes labour etc

You can choose your own colours etc but that does depend on who you get it done through and what they offer cause really your paying for it so you could get what colours u want but you could ask the painter what it might look like. The guy i work with everynow and then played around with some paints one arvo one that caught my eye was yellow going into green on the bonnet looked really quite good. If you did get chamelion the price rises with the more colours u use and if you scratch it or something your up shits creek on trying to get it to match cause it would be very hard.

Some techniques like fading etc can look nice if you choose colours that look good together

Ok Sweet as, can you use basically any combination of colours with chameleon? im thinkin of a yellow/orange kind of chameleon effect but with a black undertone or something...i cant really explain it but i want mainly a bright/pearly black with some flares of orange/yellow(maybe red) etc.

this may be impossible or sound weird but yeah im not sure how it works so whatever.

I paid $5000 for the respray on my Gemini. The prices vary a lot. Remember you get what you pay for. The cheap ($1500) resprays usually don't go back to bare metal or use 2 pak paint. That Chamelion paint is way way expensive. The price has probably come down but 4 years ago when i painted my car the chamelion paint was almost $1000 a litre. Thants just the paint. From memory my gem used about 4 or 5 liters.

best thing is to go into a panel shop and they all have a huge wall of colour chips that you can flick thru.

its wicked fun choosing a colour for your car, but just try deciding on one! i pulled my hair out over what to paint it! so many colours look good. there is no BEST colour, but thats what you want!

    • KW only offers a set for the R32 GTR. Popular options are D2 racing, Ksport or Öhlins. I have a D2 Racing coilover set, though I don't know for sure which one.
    • Well, the good news is you have more than one very good option for new coilovers in and around your country. Worth the drive over to KW to talk about GTR stuff.
    • Fair enough, I am in no way a tire expert so I'm not familiar with all the terms and conditions. I'll definitely note down the AD09 to potentially try in the future. Rain is not too big of a concern for now as I will probably only drive in the rain when I have to. And considering I still lack experience driving the GTR I'd more than likely take it easy too. I have coilovers in the car but as I barely got to drive so far I never bothered to even check if they are adjustable haha. The suspension is almost entirely old and worn as well so I suppose when I eventually fix that in the future that would make a huge difference.
    • There's not a great deal to report here .... except ...... FOR .... LSD!!!  I bought a Quaife LSD from the UK and shipped it here .... Wish I'd just bought locally cause the shipping and duty was $700! But there were so many diffs used in the E90s I just wanted to be absolutely certain I was getting the right one so I spoke with a supplier in the UK who builds race cars and they have heaps of experience with the E90s.  I pulled the diff out which was seriously awesome - I've never done anything like that before, I must have watched 1000 videos on YT about it as well as consulting the Bentley manual. It was super easy in the end. The diff was delivered to the awesome folks at Hornsby Diffs and will be back in a few weeks. I also replaced the diff bushings with some Nolathane ones.  Really looking forward to getting it back and getting back to the track or even the skidpan.
    • yeah... the 13kg/mm springs weren't always in there, I had 10kg/mm but doing a few SMSP commanded heavier front springs. It's so good now going into T1 and T2, just need more seat time and real tyres.
