Hey chaps. Im trying to narrow this problem down, let see if you have any more ideas. Basically under full throttle the car will pull like normal up to about 4000 rpm then continue smoothly but slowly and with a lot less power up to about 6000 rpm then kick in like normal again after that. Its relatively standard with a fmic, exhaust and pod, but it did the same thing slightly more noticeably when it was standard. New spark plugs didnt help. I believe its an air flow related issue maybe the a/f meter giving false readings forcing it to r&r? Not completely sure on the r&r situation as theres so much conflicting info about it. Also as u can imagine its alot more noticable in higher gears. Let me know your thoughts, cheers.

It's the standard ignition curves. The ECU has load maps (actually airflow maps which relate to boost pressure) that go past the stock boost pressure to about 12psi. At stock boost pressure running up the revs (down the rev table) the ignition numbers are roughly :

4000 20

4400 21

4800 21

5200 21

5600 22

6000 22

6400 23

At the highest boost (airflow) ~ 10psi point the maps look more like this:

4000 14

4400 6

4800 4

5200 4

5600 8

6000 14

6400 14

so as you move towards this over-boosted load section of the ECU maps then you get massive drops in ignition timing - hence the slow response. It's called R&R and it's most noticeable around the 4 - 6k revs - it does pick up a lot after 6k. Totally normal for boosted R33, get an aftermarket ECU, SAFC or remap.

Champions... ill take it all on board. One thing though its not boosted. I thought It could be a boost soleniod problem so i rigged up a manual controller but it did the same thing and i hadnt even started to play with the boost. Do you still believe its r&r? (Boost gauge in back seat not yet wired up so not sure of actual boost im running but it doesnt go like my mates boosted skyline with almost the same mods.

no it does not, it means get your tune checked

the PFC is completely different to the stock ECU

i love how everyone's first thought is rich and retard even though he says it was worse when the car was standard. when i experienced rich and retard when i first put on my boost controller and it was set to 14psi, it wasn't like a slight flatspot. it was like the key had been turned off then back on. it was a violent cut of power.

there is usually a bit of a flat spot around 4500rpm when the vct switches off. i used to notice it most in 3rd gear or in second gear going up a steep hill, with both a remapped ecu and stock ecu

i also have a similar problem, mines straight to the actuator and is around 8psi, but at around the 5k mark the psi boosts way over 8psi to more like 14psi, can this be fixed with a slight clamping of the boost hose from the intercooler or the one to the actuator?

I stick to my ignition curve data - which is not exactly as it appears on the map but easier to understand. It does not explain why it is doing it stock. Cam timing does play a role here. My car even with timing taken 2 degree out (less timing) around VCT change-over gets a kick at ~4800rpm and above. Might just feel flat at it builds boost until 3500rpm, then flat, then cams give it a kick at top end. Normal RB25 behavior see website HKS GTRS maps.

does it stay high until redline or is it just a spike? if it stays there then i'd say you have an issue with your dump pipe or the wastegate flap. something is going on where it isn't able to flow enough air through the wastegate so it is going through the turbine wheel and creating the extra boost.

there is a small chance it could be something kinking/squashing the wastegate line though.

also i had issues with spiking just after i put my fmic on and i had the wastegate hose running from the bov line. i was getting issues where it was spiking to 14psi (was running 10 at the time) for a second when applying the accelerator after changing gears. and it wasn't holding boost that well at high rpm. i ended up cutting the boost nipple off the old intercooler piping and welding it into the pipe from the turbo to the cooler and never had an issue after that.

I had the same problem in my series 1 r33. I tried everything you could possibly think of that could contribute to the problem with no success. So i purchased Power FC with Handcontroller and got that tuned and my car runs like a dream now. Thats how I fixed it, mine was r&r, but could be different for yourself, but the symtoms sound pretty much identical to what i had. Retune will definately fix it up for you.

    • If as it's stalling, the fuel pressure rises, it's saying there's less vacuum in the intake manifold. This is pretty typical of an engine that is slowing down.   While typically is agree it sounds fuel related, it really sounds fuel/air mixture related. Since the whole system has been refurbished, including injectors, pump, etc, it's likely we've altered how well the system is delivering fuel. If someone before you has messed with the IACV because it needed fiddling with as the fuel system was dieing out, we need to readjust it back. Getting things back to factory spec everywhere, is what's going to help the entire system. So if it idles at 400rpm with no IACV, that needs raising. Getting factory air flow back to normal will help us get everything back in spec, and likely help chase down any other issues. Back on IACV, if the base idle (no IACV plugged in) is too far out, it's a lot harder for the ECU to control idle. The IACV duty cycle causes non linear variations in reality. When I've tuned the idle valves in the past, you need to keep it in a relatively narrow window on aftermarket ecus to stop them doing wild dances. It also means if your base idle is too low, the valve needs to open too much, and then the smallest % change ends up being a huge variation.
    • I guess one thing that might be wrong is the manifold pressure.  It is a constant -5.9 and never moves even under 100% throttle and load.  I would expect it to atleast go to 0 correct?  It's doing this with the OEM MAP as well as the ECU vacuum sensor. When trying to tune the base map under load the crosshairs only climb vertically with RPM, but always in the -5.9 column.
    • AHHHH gotchaa, I'll do that once I am home again. I tried doing the harness with the multimeter but it seems the car needed a jump, there was no power when it was in the "ON" position. Not sure if I should use car battery jump starter or if its because the stuff that has been disconnect the car just does send power.
    • As far as I can tell I have everything properly set in the Haltech software for engine size, injector data, all sensors seem to be reporting proper numbers.  If I change any injector details it doesnt run right.    Changing the base map is having the biggest change in response, im not sure how people are saying it doesnt really matter.  I'm guessing under normal conditions the ECU is able to self adjust and keep everything smooth.   Right now my best performance is happening by lowering the base map just enough to where the ECU us doing short term cut of about 45% to reach the target Lambda of 14.7.  That way when I start putting load on it still has high enough fuel map to not be so lean.  After 2500 rpm I raised the base map to what would be really rich at no load, but still helps with the lean spots on load.  I figure I don't have much reason to be above 2500rpm with no load.  When watching other videos it seems their target is reached much faster than mine.  Mine takes forever to adjust and reach the target. My next few days will be spent making sure timing is good, it was running fine before doing the ECU and DBW swap, but want to verify.  I'll also probably swap in the new injectors I bought as well as a walbro 255 pump.  
    • It would be different if the sealant hadn't started to peel up with gaps in the glue about ~6cm and bigger in some areas. I would much prefer not having to do the work take them off the car . However, the filler the owner put in the roof rack mount cavities has shrunk and begun to crack on the rail delete panels. I cant trust that to hold off moisture ingress especially where I live. Not only that but I have faded paint on as well as on either side of these panels, so they would need to come off to give the roofline a proper respray. My goal is to get in there and put a healthy amount of epoxy instead of panel filler/bog and potentially skin with carbon fiber. I have 2 spare rolls from an old motorcycle fairing project from a few years back and I think it'd be a nice touch on a black stag.  I've seen some threads where people replace their roof rack delete with a welded in sheet metal part. But has anyone re-worked the roof rails themselves? It seems like there is a lot of volume there to add in some threads and maybe a keyway for a quick(er) release roof rack system. Not afraid to mill something out if I have to. It would be cool to have a cross bar only setup. That way I can keep the sleek roofline that would accept a couple bolts to gain back that extra utility  3D print some snazzy covers to hide the threaded section to be thorough and keep things covered when not using the rack.
