The stock ECUs arent interchangeable (correct me if I am wrong). I think it has to do with the base tuning? The AFMs and Cams are different to one another (as well as coil packs) so require a different setting etc....

For aftermarket ECUs however, the plugs are defintely the same as each other as the Apexi Power FC fits both S1 & S2 ok.

they both have an ignitor that is seperate to the ECU, therefore it doesnt affect it.

the S1 has an external ignitor, and then 6 coil packs, S2 has 6 coil packs with built in ignitors.

Different CAMS? Oh come on... thats just silly.

They are the same.

ECU's can be changed between no problems, even Auto ECU's in the Manual work fine

R31Nismoid - thankyou for correcting my wrongness, and so subtle too.

witth the cams though, why are Tomei poncams not interchangeable between the series 1 & 2? Isnt that to do with the crank angle sensor being different in each model? Or am I just being silly again?

mythbusters ahoy

as the guys have identified already, the main notable difference between series 1 and series 2 is the coil setup

this however, means nothing to the ECU, as the changes (between s1 and s2) are done on the engine loom side, so its transparent to the ECU

all of the sensors, dials, meters, voltage ranges etc are the same, and operate the same, there is no difference

there are other notable differences such as 4wire AFM vs 3wire but again, this is engine loom side difference, so its transparent to the ECU

an issue does however occur, when say on a series 2 skyline, you plug in a series 1 ECU and the MER (or MEC?) chip is different

from memory this is the main hitachi chip on the board. there are a few variants for S1 and for S2

if you use the wrong one, the car basically runs like a bucket of crap, sluggish, slow and doesnt go hard

there are no sensor errors, no warning lights, no backfiring etc when this happens, it just runs sluggish

why it happens, i dont know, its something to do with the MER (or MEC?) chip being the wrong model - ask toshi, he knows what it is, and why it goes sluggish

there would be minor minor differences in the map data between s1 and s2 but these differences would be neglibable

ie, you wont loose power or make magical rwkw by using a S2 ECU on a S1 R33, or vice versa

much is the same if using an Auto ECU on a manual car etc or vice versa

it will work and run ok, but you may find the Auto ECU expects "auto" gearbox signal, so it might throw on the engine check light

or it might refuse to start (its waiting for the auto box to say im in park) or you might find VCT wont engage (as VCT wont engage until the car is in gear, must NOT be nuertral)

so in summary

interchanging is OK - but check how the car drives

interchanging auto to manual is OK - but not recommended - why would you bother? its just a headache

in all cases its by far easier to source the correct ECU for your car, in all cases

the stock ecu is worth $10

aftermarket ECU's copy the stock ecu (they must, to work corretly) so a plug and play ECU will be the same

ie; its no difference s1 or s2 and it works the same

it physically looks different (there is an extra plug on the series 1 TPS) but i dont know of any difference in the ECU logic etc?

ie the voltage range is the same, it works the same, it functions the same, but the phyiscal appearance is difference

find a photo of a s1 throttle body and s2, youll note theres an extra plug

On what the tps? The s1 also has the extra connector on the tps body, it just goes to the tcu if you have an auto.

    • So the original radiator is leaking now. Looking at getting a fully aluminium one next. Am I correct in saying that the Series 2 Auto Stageas have a separate trans cooler from factory (located in between the rad and intercooler in my previous post/message).   Currently looking at Fenix $460, Blitz $700, GReddy $800, and KoyoRad $740. What are everyones thought on Fenix ( ive read a few comments saying theyre cheap Chinese rebrands etc and how their build quality is... well.. chinese...)  compared to the others? Worth the extra couple hundies?
    • Man, different parts but the same numbers is terrible @dbm7! And it doesn't help that most online shops don't list the part numbers at all. They just give a list of compatible models...
    • Slow when hot could also be because its getting more dynamic compression, OR things are getting a bit tighter once it is all expanded. If it were an earthing issue, typically I'd expect you to have it have issues all the time. Unless it's really a combination of both things. Where the higher compression, and things being a bit tighter, is giving that bit of extra load and you do need a slight clean up on the cables/connections.
    • Yeah, this is one of the most annoying things about nissan part numbers... I've got an unrelated example... Image is of the AT output shaft ~ they have the same part#, but clearly the shaft on the left is beefier design to that on the right ...the difference (essentially) is the 'lighter' shaft on the right, is for engines up to RB25DE (this includes RB20 variants) : the shaft on the left is for RB25/26DET(T)....are they interchangeable? Yes...but obviously one shaft is going to be stronger than the other...and, the lighter shaft is around USD115, but the heavier shaft closer to USD150...same part#... ...epc-data usually tells a tale ~ the amayama listing for 39100-23U60 has a note "Longest side is between 60 and 105 cm" ; no such info is there for 39100-23U70 ...and given the great disparity in price between the 2 parts, it makes me at least curious (to the point of caution) where the 'extra money' went? ...ie; these 2 parts have a cost difference that (to myself at least) isn't explained by 'plastic boot'...ie; with amayama there's AUD700 price difference ...plastic versus rubber?...I'm not seeing it like that...and 60cm ~ 105cm...??...that's a huge disparity....something hinky going on here... I'd try searching by VIN, not model... /2cents
