Hey all,

I have decided to keep my car now and I am planning on doing some of the sscc rounds next year and I am going to try and do the MRA rounds also. I have come across a little hurdle, my car is due for rego at the end of this month and I don’t know weather to re register it or not?

As the car is not my daily driver and I rarely drive it on the street and I live over two and a half hours from the closest track, is it worth spending the extra money getting it registered? any events i have attended i have floated my car anyway and i plan to do so in the future.

As I have not done many events will any of the events discourage non-registered cars? Are there any extra fees to enter a non-registered car at the same event? (The car will be log booked)

And if I was to get it re registered again one day would it just be a matter of an engineer’s cert and a blue slip?

Thanks for reading I just don't want to spend money where it is not necessary and I could be using it to be on the track more.

Cheers,

Ryan

For me it's all the non track outings that I keep mine regoed for, taking it somewhere to get tuned/aligned etc, you have to decide if its worth loading it up every time you need to take it somewhere to get work done. As far as I know there are not many, if any track days that require regoed cars.

Dont registeer it.

There is no difference in entry fee's etc and for low key club stuf you dont need a cams log book. If you want to do the MRA rounds then you have to have AASA log book which is simple paperwork.

Is the car currently caged or your still looking at doing that??

The cost of rego/insurance can purchase a trailer. If the thing breaks its not sitting there wasting rego (money) and you can still get it home anyways.

If you want to register it latter depending what you have done it will need a blue slip minimum but may need to have the modifications reversed depending what you do and how far you go with it.

Thanks Brad, no cage as yet I was looking into a weld in but now am thinking a Bolt in Bonds one might do?

Do non registered cars need a log book for the sscc or will they just accept the aasa logbook or just do a simple scrutineering check on it?

interesting read... as i am currently in the same boat.... other option to think about is Club Rego... but i think that involves a PC license yada yada yada...

Mebe Ryan we can talk a supplier into doing a deal for 2 x car trailors :P

Can i just add my 2c thou.... Do you have a suitable tow vehicle? Is it capable of towing no fuss.... my VY will require about $1K of mods to safely and continually tow 1600kg+

Do you have the space to store a trailor?

Another thing is you never find out any issues with the car until your on the track.... keeping it rego'd you can drive around and potentially find any issues prior to race day....

Do you want to ever sell it? If so rego'd or non rego'd? How much $$$ will you lose by trying to sell it deregistered.... yada yada

All food for thought and what is running through my head :P

Some valid points.

Storage for a trailer can be a pain. If not imposible for some

Modifying a tow car is well worth the expense. you only need to break down at goulburn once or twice and you've paid for it. I may sell my open trailer if someone is interested, I want an enclosed one now.

As far as finding problems, preparation for a sole race car becomes fairly different to a road car. For instance before my GTR goes onto the trailer its lifted up all wheels off and everything is double checked front to back. If there is a problem 99% of the time we'd find it. Also you find little problems would not normally show up on the road anyways. Thats just what I have found anyways.

Selling it your 100% correct. But a sole race car can be worth more money to selected people. They are harder to find and harder to sell to but they do exist.

Thanks for the valid points Ando, bloody cars a.

Well it just so happens that the car trailer that I have been using has shit it self and me and the bloke who own it well lets just say we don't talk anymore. RE BATHURST.

And I have found a new replacement trailer it is sweet, it has alloy runners and alloy ramps, a checker plate nose cone to stop chips etc mags with LT tyres and electric brakes and it only weighs 450kgs, and guess what he has two for sale what a co-incidink. But the bad bit is they are expensive $4300.00 each :-(. PM me if you are keen and i will talk to him on Friday and send through some pics for you.

Thanks Brad PM sent.

One race meet and the bumper on you car will be sandblasted so I would'nt be too worried about it getting stone chips on the trailer.

That is pretty expensive. I paid around the 2K mark for mine Brand new and another 350 bucks for 4meter long alloy ramps

My rego is up for renewal and is due on June 23rd. The car has done 2500kms I reckon in the last 2 years and all of those were to and from the track and tuners!

I was contemplating not renewing it as I have stripped the interior and am installing a Bonds roll cage (brad: I should have got a weld in rear half cage with removable fronts doh) but I like the fact I can jump in and go around the block, drive it to the tuners, to get petrol etc etc

Luckily for me a friend just built a trailer so I can use that and his ute when he is not using it!

What is this club or rally rego people are talking about?

Cars indeed!! Just like women... cant live with em, can live without em... *no offence ladies* :ermm:

$4.5K for a trailor.. sheet does it have a mobile BJ booth on it? Thats a lot of moula... from doing some research you can pick up one for around $2-$2.5K...

Appreciate the offer Ryan champ but a little steep for my povo budget!!

If you dont mind PM who you sourced your trailor from that would be awesome. My rego isnt due till Oct but i want all bases covered and the decision made asap.

Cheers for your input as well. Good to hear pointers from someone who has done the derego thingy :)

It is a toughy really, pros and cons each way you look at it... My biggest con is i live on a tiny street in townhouses with no room for a trailor, so i would struggle with leaving trailor on the street 90% of the time....

Thats an easy fix.

I must admit I miss driving the GTR on the road and have actually contemplated registeering my car a few times. Id get raped by high way patrol though and its just not worth the hassle!

Elf Trailers in ingelburn I bought mine from. I got the larger 16foot for the price of a 14 foot but noramlly his about 2K for a 14 footer which will still fit a silvia/skyline comfortably.

i'm thinking of going down this path now also, now that i have a tow car..

the gtr has been off the road for well over a year now, the only problem is resale.. but i dont see myself selling it for any reason at all,

the pro's seem to outweigh the cons easily so it will most probably be done as soon as the motor goes back in!!

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
    • Here's an idea, answer the questions I asked you as they are trying to work out WHY the LSD will be binding up in a straight line.
    • You haven't driven many modern cars then have you? Most of them have sfa steering feel with their stupid electric bullshit steering systems.
