Whats the deal with DEFECTS in VIC??

Recommended Posts

Whats the chances of getting a defect in Vic?? In SA, its almost certain that 1 out of 3 times a cop see's you, they will pull you over and defect you.

Also where do they send you to clear it? I heard its pretty easy to clear them in VIC :P

And lastly whats the cost of a defect??

Thanks for the info.

About $180 and easy to clear if car is roadworthy (add cost of roadworthy certificate $30 to 65) Vic roads office to clear with RWC. Some cops will defect even if car is legal.

so you get finned for having a defective vehicle? what if you get a defect and your vehicle is legal.. do you try and make you pay the 180?

oh to keep this on topic as well. Ive been driving my car around for 2 years now and have never been pulled over in it. I guess im just lucky though :P

it all depends on if they actually fine u... cause i was defected in josies soarer but not given a fine. She just had to get the noise checked however so i guess it depends on what u get defected for and how badly.

I guess i was unlucky with the cop, he was an absolute prickk, would have loved to smash him.

dont be affraid... doesnt seem to stop my cousin lol

jk i would never suggest that... its just the way he is :P

It's $165 plus a roadie, mine just went up to 180something, because I couldn't decide in time whether to go to court. It re-kindled my dislike for the few hot shot police out there who seem to think they can question everything but the dead standard hub cap clad shopping carts. GRRR

got pulled over last week. for a hook turn dilemma, long story. cop A asked me how loud is my "big exhaust" at 2000rpm .. in my head, i was like "how the $%^& would i know". I was like, errr .. i dont know, not loud. then he goes like is it more than 92dB ? i was like noo..

dont know whether i'd get EPA or not. We'll just have to wait and see. And by the way, he said 2000rpm when they actually tests at 4000rpm. What the ... man ..

he said they'll send my traffic offence fine in the mail. Wonder how many points would be deducted. Lucikly they didnt ask me to pop the bonnet. :)

Yeah 1 in 3 chances cos its such a small country town and the best bit is they will remember you next time!! Also when u get defected for any mods, they send you to a RTA place where they check on EVERYTHING ELSE!! So u might get defected for a blow off and then you will get done for everything at the RTA Station. Is this the same in VIC? or do you just have to clear what you got defected for?

Thanks for the info by the way :)

pretty much the same dude... u get sent to the EPA and ur rooted. Altho my gf got sent there in her soarer altho it only has a HKS pod and huge exhaust... we swapped the exhaust but left the pod and she passed :) he said not to worry about the POD.

    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
