I'm going to say go the GT-R naturally :P I Daily mine and I havn't had an issue with cop attention either.

I have to agree, however I would add that any car that is 15-20 years old is going to have wear and tear issues. This is natural and nothing to be worried about, you just have to be aware that over the time you own it, you'll need to replace one thing after another (unless you drop even more cash and do a complete rebuild from scratch)

that said, I don't begrudge the money i've spent. provided no smeghead collides with me and I don't screw up and crash, then I anticipate I'll be keeping the car for a long while, and I believe that in the next couple years I'll be replacing the rest of the old and tired gear as it is. Engine builds can be considered an extra, however I still have 210-220kw 20 years later. Its quite common for a non thrashed rb engine to get the pistons removed and still have the original hone marks visible (at least thats what my mechanic told me when discussing my rb30)...

a car will never make you money - as long as you accept that and see the vehicle as something you have to feed and clean and pay for health care (like a kid) then you won't be so bothered ;)

(Disclaimer - I hate kids and would rather have a gtr but thats just me  Your mileage may vary)

My opinion - for $20K...

RX-7 - you're gonna end up with something with higher kms, and once rotaries get over about 70,000km, they turn into disasters if the previous owner hasn't maintained it.

V35 - never get a decent coupe under $25K, they seem to be fetching stupid prices in Japan at the moment, even high km ones. You'd get a really nice sedan for $20K though, but I'd take a Y34 Cedric/Gloria over one every day of the week.

R32 GT-R - even the owners on here will admit that getting a tired/rough/high-km example is a recipe for disaster in terms of the money you'd need to spend to keep it on the road. Having said that, $20K will buy you a nice, low-km 1994 GT-R, but V-Specs and V-Spec 2s are a stack more than that.

The other option already mentioned is an Evo 6 (not a Makkinen) or even an Evo 5, one hell of a performance car for the money, and so easy to modify.

+1 to all of the above

"That Cat Knows His Shit" - Dohmar, talking about Iron Chef

EDIT - One thing I will disagree with Kristian is on mileage - you can get some very high mileage vehicles that have been immaculately maintained

Conversely, you can get the very opposite, low mileage cars that have not been cared for. Some japanese people dont ever service their cars because they just dont drive as much as us. The reality is that its somewhere in between, which is made all the harder due to the prevalence of aftermarket r32 gtr speedos (for 280/320kph limit) - when this happens you have no idea as to how many KM's its done. Thats why you'll generally pay more for a GTR that still has >everything< stock, regardless of the mileage reported. and the vspec 1 and 2's are becoming very rare now as people realize that they are becoming collectors items - for the money they will be worth, its almost worth trying to source a crashed vspec2 with an intact chassis and vin and then rebuilding from scratch. heh. end rant.

That's why I wrote rough/tired/high-km :P You're right - they don't always go together. On balance of probabilities a lower km one is going to be in better condition though

i'd go evo 6 mate, their nice cars, big and roomy too so its pretty good for a daily.

i think you can get evo 7's for a bit more than 20k nowadays though, like 25k or so should get a decent one.

if you wanna use it for a daily id think something a bit newer would be bit better, outta those options i'd go either the evos or the 34 gt-t.

thats just me though, evo's n 34's r my favourite cars :P

If i was to buy a 32gtr, i'd want a mint, factory standard one. That looks the goods, but the price worries me.

Why? So you could stress about the oil pick up design fault, the ceramic turbos that are 20 years old, a gearbox that is probably losing 4th or the internals that may go bang on a proper launch?

If I had my time again and was buying an R32 GTR again I would buy one that looks stock but has steel wheeled ball bearing turbos, forged internals and corrected the oil problem.

As for the OP - without knowing the exact prices of these things I would go the most modern car that you can - either a R34 GTT or the V35. Potentially way less things to fix in the short term and at a much lower cost than a GTR or RX7.

Remember kiddies - GTRs EAT $. Seriously! Think of them as a Pac Man eating your payslips. That is reality. Ask the many GTR owners on this forum. They will, or previous owners would have, sunk lots of $ into their cars. Either that or they are doing cheaper, short cut, temporary repairs that are less than ideal and will likely create more problems at some stage in the future.

damn you serious?

im thinking of swapping my 25gt 34 for a gt-r in a couple years once i have more money, either a 33 or a 34

would it be cheaper to do the gt-r body + stick in a turbo and a couple more performance mods or just get a full gt-r?

sorry to jack the thread

if its not a GTR its not a GTR. Yeah theyre all expensive, but people keep them because they do actually live up to the hype.

Just get a 34 or 33 gtr, fix whatever needs fixing and enjoy relatively hassle free ownership. a 32 gtr will cost less to buy but cost you more in the long run due to its age and inherent oil problems/ceramic turbos/wear and tear. If you can afford it, 34 gtr all the way, otherwise you can get well maintained 33 gtrs for 26-30k

and in a couple of years time the 34 gtrs will be cheaper still but will be showing their age a bit more - consider that when you come to being in a position to buy one

yeah I'm starting to appreciate the EVO's more & more as I see them going around Malalla and the hill climbs.......definitely couldn't go wrong there for that sort of money.......a 32GTR would be my 1st choice naturally but at that price you'll be spending alot more on it me thinks, not to mention that EVO's tend to go under the radar literally.

Probably a question for Kristian though; in the same way the '99 & '00 WRX and the 32GTR are cult cars, was there a particular model EVO that has a similar tag......obviously Tommy Makinen 6.5 comes to mind.....any EVO experts out there?

well most of my mates who really love evo's are into the 9

i can see why, its one of my favourites too :)

but yeah the 6 would definitely be a big hit too especially the 6.5 tommy makinen

yeah cheers dohmar, by the time im ready to get a real gt-r i think the 34 would be relatively affordable.

was mainly considering insurance/maintenance costs, but for a gt-r its worth it xD

you got that right man. while i'm always gonna be partial to the 32 gtr, a well maintained r34 gtr will be affordable in 2 years time, and as sled can affirm, they are beasts

32's are keeping their value tho i must say, and a well maintained 32 gtr will still be worth $25k in 2 years time imho - tho you'll see some thrashed ones for $10-15k too

mines ate f all i keep track of it :) account nerd

only serious costs ive had with it are defect related and resulting engineers report. but then if anything does brake on them its usually a lil more pricey for the gtr parts. still theres no way i regret buying it.

also depends on how much u like to thrash it and how much its been thrashed prior to you owning it

    • For these last 7 years of ownership, I've always had to use a small scissor jack under one of the front tow hooks to raise the front just enough so my low-profile jack fits under to reach my subframe jack point. I'm beginning to get annoyed of always having to do this. Are there any lower low-profile jacks that fit under the gtr lip on a dropped car?
    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
