My clutch is farked. Its been slipping for a while, but all of sudden its gotten a whole lot worse.

I've had all sorts of advice from my mates, and have done my own research, but unfortunately I don't know much about the drivetrain and most of the advice I read was for turbo cars.

The two pieces of advice I've received was:

a) Get a lightened flywheel whilst you're at it.

b) Get a heavy duty clutch.

What I'm wondering, is a lightened flywheel really going to make that much difference on a stock NA Supra (I know it's not a Skyline, but really, there's not much difference in terms of kw per ton), do I need a heavy duty clutch, and can anyone recommend a brand or type please.

Also, with the lightened flywheel, I've read all the pros and cons and my main concern is that it can often upset the cars idle. I've read stories about Supras rattling like hell on idle. Has anyone experienced this with their Skyline? I've only got a 5spd, and the only complaits I read about the rattling was on 6 spd Getrag models, but even still it has me worried.

I know I'm asking a lot, but I need to get this fixed ASAP and I have tried to do research.

Cheers.

i have upgraded my clutch to a Xtreme Heavy Duty Cushioned Ceramic Button Clutch, and will be eventually getting a Chrome Moly Lightened Flywheel to go with.

The clutch i got is much better than stock and you still have that "play" with it, its not a on/off clutch, it very nice :P but not nice in peak hour traffic......you really know its a heavy duty one! :P

yehh i just got a xtreme heavy duty clutch put in my n/a 33 and it feels alot better than the stock clutch

its got good play but its not the best in traffic

for only a bit more money id rather get a heavy duty clutch than a standard one. its worth it

Lightened flywheels are awesome. They make the engine a lot more rev-happy and responsive. You might get a bit of rattling, but its a small price to pay for awesomeness.

A heavy duty clutch is only really necessary if you're making too much power for the stock item to cope with. I wouldn't bother on a NA car, unless you plan on turboing it in the future.

hi, there is nothing wrong with getting a heavy duty pressure plate for a bit extra clamp but i would recommend an organic clutch plate. an off the shelf exedy clutch will do the job and drive like stock, as for the flywheel i wouldnt bother in your situation.

i agree. i've got a n/a and bout to throw a exedy hhd clutch in it. not a button one their just to hard to work with where i live (traffic)

A flywheel is a mod which is pretty unnecessary but if your planning on upgraded to a turbo later on or if you just want your n.a to performance a wee bit better than go for it.

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
    • Yeah mate, never miss it.
    • Any going to watch World Time Attack at SMSP this year?
    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
