hello one n all of the very knowledgable leagues of skyline n sports enthusiasts i have a problem n hopefully i can get your help. heres the thing im a young guy with a sum of money burning a whole in my pocket ($20,000 max) and haveing not owned anything sports like in my life, car wise (i have a ducati Monster 600 :P ). i have a desire to own that sporty head turning car and lets face it the best time to do so is now while im young an have the money rather than havin a midlife crisis a divorce settlement and a kid or two later in life.

so anyway i want that thrilling ride that awesom car and having not a whole lot of car based knowledge, i've looked around some yards and browsed the net and come to the concluesion that a skyline sounds about right. however when it comes to what exactly i should be looking out for im completly lost all the numbers and diffrent models got me totally confused.

can i ask for your help figuring out what car i should be aiming to buy ?

i dont just want a heavy beefed up car that goes mega fast in a straight line i want that sporty experiance you get from great cornering powerful but controllable if you understand me?

was i right to look at skylines or should i be looking at a diffrent car maby ?

so conditions recap -

$20,000 budget

full license

All round Sports experiance , style , cornering , power

Get a silvia for about 12K and up ( s13 s14 sr20s very cheap to work on and alot lighter than most the boats) And then sell your Duke and with the money you saved, and the money from the sale of your duke upgrage and get like a 848 or a jap 1000 :P There you go total change of your garage, fun times begin!

You could easily find an older gen Skyline/Stagea (e.g R32, R33, C34) with a bit of work done to it with some change which could be a good option. Or if you wanted something more stock an R34 GT-T or if you looked around an R32 GT-R. All of these would be a good option.

Or you could always buy an Aristo, Chaser, Pulsar GTir or VR-4 just to be different! :P

A damn good quality R32 GTR is what I would buy with $20k if I was in your position. My R33 gtst owes me roughly $35k but I've just grown a financially unhealthy attachment to it, the 32 GTR is the superior car, and I know you'll enjoy it.

I'm more interested in the Aristo or Chaser these days, to be honest, because I miss good size 4 doors, but you'll have far better chance of getting upgraded or customizing parts for the GTR, not to mention a larger range of vehicle choices, and 4WD as a bonus. Occasionally a respected workshop will sell a beautifully modified R&D car for peanuts compared to what the parts and labour cost. Even if you get sick of it or, heaven forbid, crash it, you can make back your money selling parts.

Oh and the Pulsar GTI-R is fantastic fun. I knew a bloke who took all the crap off one to make it look dull as dishwater and really beefed up the important bits. A true sleeper that, more importantly, was brilliant to drive.

ok GTR's seem to be quite the popular choice an with a bit of wiki'ing it certainly sounds good althou definatly at the top of my budget which i may have to consider stretching for the right GTR , they certainly sound and look like the right car on paper think i need to find some for test drives. so onto the next question where can i find GTR's for sale carsales didnt seem to have too many options other than ten fours very nice gtr , might have to take you up on that drive.

silvias are a maby again carsales didnt have much of a selection mostly s15 's that i couldnt afford anyway.

i test drove 2x GTS25T today 1 manual and 1 auto gona have to go with manuals those autos just feel far to lazy for the experiance i want.

Id got a 32 GTR for an "overall handling experience" or whatever it is your touting.

Dont forget to budget in a bit of cash for fixing the things that break every couple months, it can and does happen.

Totally agree.

Can you get a good R34 GTT for 20K?

You could get a mint late model R33 GTST, and have a wad of change to spare.

R32's are getting a bit long in the tooth. Just makes it harder to get a good one, but not impossible. GTR's cost more to service also.

Any GT-R now with the age of them will cost you money in repairs, minor things like clutches and turbo's are in thousands and even to the extend half or equal to what the purpose price was after a couple of years. GTST or RB25 powered skylines are great value with little cost's in repairs, especially now with some R34 GTT's becoming great value. Owning both the GT-R is amazing to drive but has cost plenty to maintain, while R33's provide reasonable performance without the stress of shitting your pants if you break something and are good value and making 200-300 safe hp. End of the day, you get what you pay for. Finding a cheap bargin might end up costing you in the long run, looking around and paying alittle extra for something that has had the general repairs and upgrades done might save you down the track. So $20,000 with money ready for insurance and repairs would get me a R32 GT-R, $20,000 running on a budget would get me a R34 GTT or R33 S2 GTST which has had a few bucks put into it.

Also, get a mechanical check up if you have found something that has caught your eye. These include the compression and leakdown tests while getting a overall checkup of the vehicle and what sort of wear it has had.

    • @Haggerty you still haven't answered my question.  Many things you are saying do not make sense for someone who can tune, yet I would not expect someone who cannot tune to be playing with the things in the ECU that you are.  This process would be a lot quicker to figure out if we can remove user error from the equation. 
    • If as it's stalling, the fuel pressure rises, it's saying there's less vacuum in the intake manifold. This is pretty typical of an engine that is slowing down.   While typically is agree it sounds fuel related, it really sounds fuel/air mixture related. Since the whole system has been refurbished, including injectors, pump, etc, it's likely we've altered how well the system is delivering fuel. If someone before you has messed with the IACV because it needed fiddling with as the fuel system was dieing out, we need to readjust it back. Getting things back to factory spec everywhere, is what's going to help the entire system. So if it idles at 400rpm with no IACV, that needs raising. Getting factory air flow back to normal will help us get everything back in spec, and likely help chase down any other issues. Back on IACV, if the base idle (no IACV plugged in) is too far out, it's a lot harder for the ECU to control idle. The IACV duty cycle causes non linear variations in reality. When I've tuned the idle valves in the past, you need to keep it in a relatively narrow window on aftermarket ecus to stop them doing wild dances. It also means if your base idle is too low, the valve needs to open too much, and then the smallest % change ends up being a huge variation.
    • I guess one thing that might be wrong is the manifold pressure.  It is a constant -5.9 and never moves even under 100% throttle and load.  I would expect it to atleast go to 0 correct?  It's doing this with the OEM MAP as well as the ECU vacuum sensor. When trying to tune the base map under load the crosshairs only climb vertically with RPM, but always in the -5.9 column.
    • AHHHH gotchaa, I'll do that once I am home again. I tried doing the harness with the multimeter but it seems the car needed a jump, there was no power when it was in the "ON" position. Not sure if I should use car battery jump starter or if its because the stuff that has been disconnect the car just does send power.
    • As far as I can tell I have everything properly set in the Haltech software for engine size, injector data, all sensors seem to be reporting proper numbers.  If I change any injector details it doesnt run right.    Changing the base map is having the biggest change in response, im not sure how people are saying it doesnt really matter.  I'm guessing under normal conditions the ECU is able to self adjust and keep everything smooth.   Right now my best performance is happening by lowering the base map just enough to where the ECU us doing short term cut of about 45% to reach the target Lambda of 14.7.  That way when I start putting load on it still has high enough fuel map to not be so lean.  After 2500 rpm I raised the base map to what would be really rich at no load, but still helps with the lean spots on load.  I figure I don't have much reason to be above 2500rpm with no load.  When watching other videos it seems their target is reached much faster than mine.  Mine takes forever to adjust and reach the target. My next few days will be spent making sure timing is good, it was running fine before doing the ECU and DBW swap, but want to verify.  I'll also probably swap in the new injectors I bought as well as a walbro 255 pump.
