so im driving along full boost top of third lift off then heaps of smoke and no power, tow the thing home and found a milkshake had been made in my donk!

the car is pretty ruff and im not really interested in spending bucket loads on it.

its a stock rb20 pushing about 150kw no plans for anymore, its got 175000ks but could have 50000 more for all i know.

ill have to do the timing belt and possibly the water pump, it blows smoke on startup so valve stem seals will need doing too?

my question is what will all this cost? i can do the work myself but i got no idea what parts i will be needing.

im thinking its gonna end up over 1k i had a quick look around for a replacement engine but they seem a little hard to find at the moment cheapest i can find is $1200ish

any suggestions

If you're mechanically minded, replace the engine.

By the time you factor in parts, and testing, in the end it could cost the same amount as a replacement engine.

I have seen RB20DET's go for as little as $500 which would definitely be the cheapest option for you if you did the job yourself with a willing mate.

yeh i can do it no probs i have replaced engines before and i have seen engines go for $200 before but theres nothing out there right now!!! i gotta get it on the road soonish as its my daily and the bus sucks ass!!

basically my preference is to swap the engine but since i can't find one cheap i wanna know how much it will cost to fix mine...

bottle of chemi-weld.........probably about 20$

results are varied..not a permanenet fix but the cheapest quik fix

.may keep you of the bus in the meantime...lol

As the great foolosopher Homer Simpson once said

"Public transport is for losers" :D

+1

this is what im doing (rb25det), managed to get a complete engine with a bottom end rattle and a good bottom end for $500, combining both into one should cost me around $500=$1000 for an engine that has been dismantled and checked Vs $1000 - $2000 for a second hand one that you hope the seller is honest about the K's and how hard it has been driven.

The cheapest way for you is to rebuild the engine you have and maybe buy a second hand head, might be cheaper than doing all the seals, cant imagine that rb20 heads are worth much (unlike rb25det) and if you head turns out to be cracked then its a cheap alternative.

    • There's restrictor pills in the stock boost control hoses. That's how they set the amount that was bled off and hence the "high" boost setting. The usual mod in the day was to remove it and send the "high" boost setting up to about 14 psi.
    • Thanks Duncan, that's the best info I've read. Furthermore after learning about the PCM programming side controlling the factory boost solenoid, the purpose of the solenoid is to "bleed" boost when pin 25 is earthed, thus allowing spring pressure in the wastegate actuator to overcome diaphragm boost pressure, thus closing or reducing the position of the wastegate flap creating more boost as the turbo is able to spin faster. It's pretty cool to see a designated Pill to do exactly this, would have liked to have seen it with a tiny filter over the end for those moments in vacuum.  The constant bleed pill has now been removed completely from the system and solenoid boost control has been restored once again.   Case closed 😂
    • The wideband reading is meaningless if it's not running. Why are you using shitty old sidefeeds on any engine, let alone a Neo? What manifold and fuel rail are you using to achieve that? Beyond that, can't help you with AEM stuff as I've never been their ECU/CAS combo.
    • Manual boost controllers (where a little of the boost was bled off) were quite common back in the day, because they were cheap and easy. Generally they had a manual adjustment screw rather than being fixed like yours. Down side is they always bleed boost, not just when you want them to so an electronic boost controller that uses a solenoid will have less lag.
    • Hello , im new here and i have A31 home build  RB25det neo stock eng / turbo  aem ems 2 blue connector  aem 3.5 map aem cas disk aem wideband connected to ecu  355 lph pump 550 nismo yellow injectors side feed aftermarket regulator  and won’t start with base aem tuner basic tune eventually flipped cas 180 degree so it triggers on correct stroke not in exhaust cycle  Now it won’t start Wideband reads 10 and 11 at lowest fuel setting  and will share calibrations soon for aem tuner i think something is wrong in aem tuner    please if you have any information, am very grateful
