Hi,

Just installed a set of adjustable cam gears and am now getting quite a loud ticking noise that sounds like very loud lifter noise. Car has never had lifters that loud so just asking for suggestions on what to check when I take the cam covers back off. All timing is fine(marks were lined up, ignition timing looks good) and I'm quite sure belts are tensioned correctly. The sound increases in frequency as the revs increase. I can't think of anything that would actually affect the lifters noise wise if timing is correct. Engine is an RB20DET and its idling perfectly fine and revving fine regardless of the noise.

Cheers,

Adrian

It's possible the Cam Angle Sensor is making the noise because it isn't perfectly flush against the timing cover, or the timing cover itself isnt flush against the backing plate throwing off the CAS.. it's also possible the screws that hold the CAS in place might be nicking or coming very close to the slider bolts (hard to tell without a clear cover) on the exhaust cam gear causing a resonance noise.

Alright I pulled out CAS and put it back in then reset timing to 15 degrees and noise has quitened to the point where I can only hear it slightly if bonnet is open and I lean in towards the cam/intake valve cover area. I opened the oil cap and its defintely coming from intake side but its so quiet now I'm not particularly worried about it as its probably a different noise all together and had I not been listening out for it I never would have noticed it.

I ran the car with cam cover off and some spacers to see if anything is fouling and it all looks good. Can anyone tell me exactly how to tell if timing belt is correct tightness though? Its making a whirring sound which some people say is common with Gates belts that are slightly too tight.

if its not making the noise when slowing down then its your injectors. they are not firing when you are on decel.

They dont?? Where does the fuel come from?

BTW this isnt intended as a cheeky question, is genuine.

    • Hi from Canada, Both of my calipers are starting to fail. My car is a 2005 M35 Stagea ARX and I can't seem to find any parts or any cross reference caliper that would fit my car. Is there a company or a similar caliper that would fit and I could replace the OEM one. Or if anyone knows where I can find a new OEM. Any help is very appreciated. Let me know!
    • Maf is a question mark but TPS  I have set at 0.47, the fact that I’m getting proper voltage range out of it with the key on leads me to believe it’s functioning properly. I’m getting proper voltages on basically everything. I still need to look up voltage ranges for z32 maf and test that
    • Honestly no not at all, but it’s a very basic tune, it’s stock injectors q45 tps and z32 maf. Other than that it’s a completely stock base map. The file is from nistune and from my understanding if it was tune related I would be able to unplug maf and tps and it would still start even if it was a really shitty start. I have tried starting it with coolant temp, maf, and tps unplugged none of those 3 togethor or individually changes anything

    • What does it look like with highway driving? And yes, I had a similar thought as Duncan. It looks quite similar in my Stagea and I have made myself accept it as normal. Might have to look into it some day   Highway gets as low as 10l/100km on my end so I'm not as worried about it being a mechanical issue. More likely just the tune on the haltech.
