Speed Camera Or Red Light Camera

Hi guys, i was driving back from uni last night, took the william street route off mounts bay road to get to the riverside dr..

Well heres the thing, i was driving 80ish going pass the bell tower, and suddenly f**k! the "yellow box" next to the red light camera flashes.. well it musnt be the red light camera because the light was green..

ive noticed the darn new box couple of times and was wondering what it is but never thought it was a speed cam...

So, what is it, anyone has any idea of what it is? are they some sort of static speed cam? please tell me it isnt..

Read something about this a while ago, and yes it is. Apparently it was (or maybe still is) being trialed, so you might be lucky. It's 60 through there & bulk people speed, a lot of them to beat the orange so I think that's the reason behind it.

yeah i read about it too..

thats the only one in perth atm.. they are trialling it. Its both red light cam and speed camera.

Everyone does speed through there though...

Today I drove Graham farmer - tunnel - orrong road. If I sit on the 80 km/hr limit on the farmer literally 50% of cars are going past me. It's embarrassing. I had a TRUCK overtake me today, then a Nissan Micra

they are planning to put speed cameras in as well to sting those who try to beat the redlights. so if you got flashed by beating the redlight, they can also catch you for speeding. not sure about the one there but hope it isnt.

errr.......... just so everyone knows the are actual live feed video cams to along riverside drive and mounts bay rd. which are also part of the static speed cam trial which are active i know cause a good mate work in the moniter station and others have been stung by either speed fine in the mail or by unmarked/mark cop car who came out of no where. just look up at the street lights and and you should notice some have a black bubble under them

nothing a can of spray paint cant fix I think there will be more accidents with people stressin out about deciding to either speed up or slow down, might confuse people behind.

once people know its there if they see a yellow they will for sure slam the brakes.

Before anyone jumps to a conclusion about this some real facts for you to think about...

a Red light camera anywhere will get your speed hance the double flash so they get a start and end distance to calculate speed.

Also the camera will only flash if you cross the line after a red not a yellow light, so on a yellow you can still roll through at normal speed with no issues.

I have been let off a fine due to the amount of rain and i went through slightly under the speed limit and told them there was a truck behind me that would not have stopped, they let me off for not being silly in the wet and i have a clean driving record, so dont try and beat the light and you will be fine.

I heard they are using as speed camera's atm (or still in trial) as lots of people speed up to get through yellow lights. Its just increasing the locations that you will get pinged for speeding. Good for them, bad for you.

short end of the story, don't speed, you wont have anything to worry about.

True that, its not hard to safely stop for a amber light

If you have to speed up get through a yellow light then you should have been able to easily stop for it.

You think the average driver is capable of doing so?

They will cruise along at 60kmh... suddenly they see it turn yellow... take them a few seconds to react to it. Then they realise o shit, theres a speed/red light camrea there.

Slam their brakes to stop..... = accidents. Espeically if its

1. Wet.

2. Big semi behind them.

3. Even worse combination of the two above.

Yes the law is important... im not saying it isnt... but the average skill of driver in W.A, as most of us can agree, is fairly low.

nope it wont,,, thats exactly my point..

however, the new static speed camera will if they decide, which is most likely, to go a little bit faster.

So instead of them looking behind them, seeing the semi, deciding to go a little bit faster to get across the amber light... which really is the smartest thing to do, rather then have a semi locking its brakes up behind you. (yes ive seen it many times before). They will realise the speed camera will go off, and they will slam the brakes. A semi up the ass of ur car... will do the following:

1. Smash the rear end of ur car to bits... most likely write off.

2. Give u severe whiplash and who knows what other neck problems

3. push you INTO the intersection, then who knows whats going to happen.

You may say now, o thats ok... it wont be their fault. The insurance will cover it. Insurance is no good if you dead, or worse, severely hurt and have to suffer the rest of your life.

I have nothing against static cameras, infact i prefer them to mobile ones and they are probably more effecient and effective when palced in the correct spots. However, placing them at traffic lights, which already have red light cameras seems to me, they just want more money. The majority of people wont go through a red light if they know a red light camera is there.

2. We are talking about the avg driver, their natural reaction is to go a bit faster to make sure they get across in time.

However, if the speed camera and red light camera is there, they will see amber, and hit the brakes. (Again the avg driver), they wont even think about is it safe to stop or not.
