Harsh..more like *no* gearchanges :( When you take out the ECU, you remove the control unit for the transmission, that's why it stays in 3rd. If you had a 25GT, it would have run just fine though, bloody Nissan.
Yep, it's only the GTt that has the intergrated TCM.ECM the N/A has the TCM seperated, so when you take out the ECU it still has gearshift capability.

I own a R34 GT (4dr, NA+T.. sort of) that has had its fair share of drama.

My ultimate fix for aforementioned drama would be to:

1) Engine swap with RB26DETT

2) Reinforce Auto box with MV Auto Shift kit

3) Use stock GTR ECU.

Given the above quotes, it should be possible. But given how expensive it would be to attempt, is any other information about this available, all over the internet all I've been able to find is DAN666's posts on the subject :P Is there any Nissan Documentation available on how this works in the NA vs the Turbo? Would really love it if it exists. Yes, I am a complete car newbie. Sorry if this is so bleedingly obvious noone documented it :D

I do also have a follow up question. (Whilst saving up for option A, above)

In my quest to get my car working, legal, and un-f**ked up (drivable), a fair bit of modification was/is/still is required, swapping loom, plenum, throttlebody etc. I also have an ECU.

This ECU is supposedly from a R34 A/T ECU. I presume this can only have come from a R34 GTT? If the shifting is handled outside of the ECU for the NA models, and you add an ECU that apparently has the shift logic in it.. what happens? Do I need to source a R34 GTT Manual ECU for my Automatic car, in this instance?

Herm not the kind of project to undertake lightly. Would suggest it is probably more sensible to get the car you have running well before attempting something like that. I have been down the path before and generally what happens is just never actually get to enjoy the car because you spend the whole time fixing problems that really never needed fixing in the first place :D.

It would make far more sense to go for a 25/30 auto in any case.

Yea, getting the thing running nice and smooth is priority one.. this is really me wondering whether I can dream about it in the future. I suppose given the time it'll take for dreaming (saving money) it wouldnt be too hard to simply try a manual ECU and find out what happens. But I'd love more info on it as opposed to simply resorting to trial and error.

Especially as "getting the car running smoothly" would be on a stock ECU ideally, still not sure what happens in regards to AT ECU in a car that apparently has shift ability without one, sounds like it would cause complications, hence the query

    • I dunno about that as a blanket statement. Pitwork is Nissan's "Nissan genuine" thing, and for stuff like timing belts, I have found them to be excellent. Of course, for things like oil filters, you always use proper trusted brands anyway, not whatever the OEM has taken to using.
    • Ahhhh... If you were putting 12V to the led in there, that's likely made it very unhappy. Chances are how you put power, was 12V across an LED that's meant to only have about 20mA through it at peak, and a forward voltage of about 1.8 to 2.4 volts. That circuit is likely only a 3V3 circuit, and will have a resistor in series with the led too. That's my guesstimate on that light, without having touched one.
    • Another vote for installing them and see how you go.  I mean, you already own them, why would you not fit them?
    • I have had too many of those over the years, my cars have a toolkit or at minimum a cheapy multi tool thing because its too easy to be snookered by some stupid plastic clip that stops you checking the battery terminal isn't loose.
    • Basically, if there is a part# on the nissan catalogue, it is a genuine part. There is a thing called "new old stock" which is stuff made years ago but never sold (or landfilled), but it is super hit and miss what you can buy. Other than some expensive Nismo stuff there is nothing new being made that suits these cars. The only time to be a little careful is (mostly in the US I think, but maybe Japan too), Nissan started rebranding some cheap crap maintenance parts like oil filters as "Pitworks"; stay away from them, if you are buying cheap just buy whatever the local car parts shop carries The three part numbers have an explanation on Amayama: 0V005 is auto, base style 0V015 is manual 0V505 is auto, hectic momo branded ones, maximum F&F points there!
