I think the redline you want to be running will have more bearing on upgrading the springs, as the stock lift for RB20DET is 7.8mm, so 8.5 isnt a huge increase (RB26 use just over 8.5mm lift).

EDIT: just had a look at the link, as the cams are made for hydrualic lifters, you should be fine as long as you keep the redline sane. I have heard it recommended by the co-owner of Signal (owner's brother) that the RB20DET should not be taken past 8200redline in stock form, with possibly more agressive ramp from the Tomei cams, perhaps even that is a bit too high?

Out of interest, why are you going 270?

I'm goin to be installing a big turbo like a 62-1,60-1 something around that line. I'm more intrested in moving the power band to the higher rpm since it's a 2.0 any way.

Hi BlueRB240, I agree with Steve, RB20DET valve springs are getting on a bit now. I would upgrade them, which you can do without removing the head. I haven't personally tried it, but I understand that RB26DETT valve springs fit. They could be a relatively easy and cheap upgrade.

Hope that helps

So what would be a good setup with a stock RB20DET, i.e. what lift, duration would you use (what cams, i was thinking HKS step 1 264 for both in and out) and would it be necessary to upgrade the valve springs with these cams? Can you go to step 2 on stock valve springs (i didnt think it was advisable)

Also why do some people use 256 in and 264 out?

The smaller inlet cam duration gives you that little bit more bottom end torque without affecting the top end to much.

Maybe some thing is wrong with mine as I'd hate to be taking off from a set of lights with the AC on a 30+degree day with a set of large cams in the RB20DET.

Is it mine or are all RB20DET's as gutless as hell until they get a bit of boost in to them?

Hi Joel, it's just your car. Well, maybe how it is set up and tuned, we run a lot of ignition timing, split dump, electric fan, balance the injectors and spend a fair bit of time tuning our RB20DET off boost and at partial throttle openings with a Power FC. Doing those things I achieved a 100% increase in power at 2,000 rpm. Most tuners go for the highest maximum horsepower and worry only a little bit about average power over the boosted rpm range. And care even less about off boost performance.

Lighter flywheel and road wheels makes a goodly difference as well.

Hope that helps

Merry Xmas

I have been waiting to see if they got the RB25,20 out but still nothing yet. :( looks like it's a commander I'll be using.

Oh.......

Doesn't everyone have an RB26??? ;):D

Just kidding mate :D... Best way to get them to make an RB25 one is to get lots of people emailing them requesting one!!!

    • Sorry to hear your HFM BM57 was faulty,  did you contact HFM I would hope they would be at least grateful for the information if there was some sort of manufacturing fault, you would hope they would be sympathetic even if your item was 2 years old if it had never been fitted. May I ask where it leaked from ?
    • Cats are called Bella, and Donna...  Like that poisonous plant And I remember your 2 monsters, I remember making a little bit of wee when you let them out... LOL I have already installed cat doors into the laundry where their kitty litter is, and the sun room, apart from the cat doors there's not going to be any permanent mounted stuff on the interior walls (interior doors are cheap and easy to replace) I will get a outdoor cat cage thingie once I finish the landscaping out back... https://catnip.com.au/ The only off limit areas are the main bedroom and the gym room....but, currently the cats are curled up in bed, in the main bedroom with the Mrs.....LOL, the off limits for the kittens to the main bedroom lasted about 5 minutes with Jackie I currently only have 1 free standing huge cat tree multiple level scratching post thingie in the lounge room, but, I will be getting another one soon now that I'm happy with the furniture layout in the back room and have a perfect spot for it
    • All of this is making it seem clear that running the Coppermix twin was definitely the way to go, especially in hindsight with how insane tariffs have gotten and the strength of the USD vs yen at the time.
    • That sounds like no chance of even importing one for road registering then Now I see why Duncan wants to check LHD rules for Targa...   I wonder how "bolt in" the AWD would be if you got one imported from the US and swapped it to an AUD one
    • Not to mention they drive like a bucket of bolts! yuck!
