Yeh, I just got my GTR back from my mechanice. Just upgraded CAT & changed spark plugs & made a CAI & partition for my pods & decided to back timing back a little. Unfortunately when I first drive the car round for the first 3 minutes or so it runs pretty rough - surging & choking with constant appliaction of throttle. Whereas before it had really smooth power delivery & well after the first initial driving it runs really well. Any ideas?

Its only when you first switch the car on of a morning or its been left sitting for about 10 hours - it doenst do it if it has been sitting for a couple of hours.

Oh, dropped the timeing back a little because I had to run 96 octane for a couple of months but now got BP Ultimate so i will advance it again.

I'm thinking that backing off the timing combined with the cold air intake is causing the problems (engine hasnt had a chance to heat up yet).

Any ideas,

Geoff

Yeh its a little strange - its only when the engine is cold. The psi definitely rises up (a little shakily) but theres a definite absense of power (my boost guage could read 0.5 bar & its only very slow & iffy power). But after it warms up (less than 5 minutes) it goes like a champion again - at 0.5 bar its definietly pushes you back in your seat.

I guess maybes its worth advancing the time & an ECU reset????

Any clues before I take it in?

not sure if it will be the same for ur car, but there was a flat braided earth wire joining the catalytic converter to the car body(not the temp sensor wire), which had come loose on mine. Once this was connected up properly, the cold surging/choking prob went away.

Not exactly sure why, but I was told that the earth wire affected the function of the o2 sensor.

Penfold: I had a similar drama with my GTR when I first got it. when the car was cold it was coughing and spluttering. If its only doing it when cold then check for a gasket leak. I had a leak behind the inlet manifold though as the car heated up, the gasket expanded and the leak went away. I also had a faulty O2 sensor which was actually the root of the problem, but the gasket issue didnt help. Get both checked.

Hope this helps

    • It is a kunfine Android screen . Does anyone know the wirering diagram of the fuga ??
    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.
    • My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.
    • Awesome, thanks for sharing!
    • To provide more specific help, more information is needed. What Android screen? What is its wiring diagram? Does the car's wiring have power at any required BAT and ACC wires, and is the loom's earth good?
