Hi Guys,

Looking for some help here.

I have recently installed an RB25DET (96 SII) motor into my R32.

It has a front pipe and a cat back exhaust (no dump) and an HKS 2530, the rest of the motor is standard i.e ECU, AFM etc

I went to the engineers to get a VASS certificate and part of that was the emissions test - just a basic one at idle.

The car failed by quite alot in the following categories:

- CO - was at about 4% to 5% | when it should have been <.45%

- HC - was at about 800 ppm | when it should have been <250ppm

The engineer seemed to think it has no cat! I know it has one as it was complied and registered with the cat thats in there, he also suggested the o2 sensor - which I have replaced.

The car was hot when the test was done - drove it to the engineer and basically did the test within 2 mins of arrival...

What im looking for is some assistance on passing - I am looking at purchasing a compliance cat and as I said I have replaced the o2 sensor already.

Any ideas other than that as to why it would have failed by so much being so close to standard? I wouldn't think a bung o2 sensor would throw emmisions out by that much?

Also just because there is a "CAT" there, doesn't mean it's fully complete.

It could have easily collapsed or blown apart @ one or another points.

Which VASS did you go to?

Catalytic converters are a part that wear's over time, they can still totally be intact and not offer any benefit in reducing emmissions CO and HC - I think the maximum life expectancy is around the 150000k mark. What you need to get is a Euro IV emmissions cat off like a BF XR6T. I would also try as has been suggested hotter plugs with a larger gap - at least 1.1mm and make sure the ignition timing is not overly advanced.

I'd get a better cat, as stated by rob82 to be honest, i mean the XR6T does run two cat's if im not mistaken, so at least one will help you!

But yeah, open the plugs (i think mine were @ 1.2 when i did my test). Just good ole coppers.

Also make sure all the coil packs are firmly plugged in, connections are good etc (like no corrosion).

Enklemen are a good bunch of people, but they do shoot reasonably straight at the same time :P

Yeah from what I have read an internally rooted cat will cause both CO and HC to go way out... Hence my result.

I have picked up and installed a compliance cat, so that should do the trick.

I'll regap the plugs to 1.1+ also - can't hurt.

Should be getting back to the engineers in the next week or two so i'll let you all know how I get on.

If it still fails check that the start wire hasnt got constant 12v wired to it also (orang wire or orange with blue stripe). I had some issues with a similar conversion and i found the "start" signal wire at the ecu was wired to ign power not start power. This adds to the injection time = rich and epa fail.

I only mention it as its had a conversion.

    • I can see between the water jacket and cyl 3 there wasn't a hard line of combustion gas. It certainly appears that the issue is coming from there. Yes, checked the tension. All at 100ft lbs where I set them 5 years ago. These blocks can crack but generally when they have been over bored. Mine is only 0.5mm oversize at 89.5mm. They break between cylinders around the 91mm mark. No sign of that with mine. My gut feeling is the head gasket lifted a while back when the studs stretched and i bandaided it by retorquing the studs. It's finally let go.
    • My Nismo 1.5 churps a bit on reverse turns when cold, but besides that feels like a stock diff.

    • So, version 4 intake is on its way I was looking at these a while ago but at around $200 or more it was a little pricey for something that might not work, but, I had it in my watch list, but, I got a message saying it was on special, and I had a code thingie to use, it eventually came in at $120 delivered, so BAM, BUY NOW.....LOL I'll need to have a look when it arrives but I feel it will "look" better than what I currently have, as it comes with a PCV fitting, so I will be able to get rid of the alloy pipe that goes to the throttle body with the PCV fitting  Well, that's what the voices in my head are telling me  Oh, and this happened today Yeap, it was a Trojan, and it was cheap, so I headed back to the hardware store and actually spent a little bit more on a heavy duty,  one that was actually recommended by a plumber mate, a Cyclone one with a fibreglass handle that is actually rated for clay The broken shovel will eventually be "modified" into a short handle shovel
