My car is running an RB20DET-R redtop ECCS.

It is stock with all the -R bits (tubular manifold, TO4, specific ECU, etc)

Driving down the freeway and it dropped a couple of cylinders, no mechanical noises, and got a ride home on a tilt tray.

1st tried swapping the crank angle sensor, no change.

next swapped the igniter, no change.

next started unplugging coil packs.

The engine is running on cylinders 2,4,and 6.

1,3, and 5 are dead.

Any ideas anyone?

I've got plenty of coil packs, plugs, 3 igniters, 4 crank angle sensors, but it seemed a bit strange 1,3,5 out and 2,4,6, in.

Every 2nd cylinder out

Need help.

hey man.

just so you know in general when coilpacks go the car still idles on 6cylinders its when under load it will normally start detonating and misfiring dropping cylinders etc

on one of my past engines was only running on 5 cylinders changed coilpacks ignitor crank angle sensor etc.. none of them were a problem so decided to do a compression test tells all tales took the spark plug out of cylinder 6 to find the end broken off run a compression test no compression on 6cylinder sounded like a hotted up subaru and a gtr with the old foot down all cylinders make some compression under full load anyways couple weeks later after some text book thrashing pulled it out and to pieces that bit of spark plug took a nice chunk out of an exhaust valve

anyways advice for you

- check coil and injector loom replace if necessary

- remove spark plugs check for missing bits

- run a compression test these engines originally came out with 180psi per cylinder. yours will more than likely have less if all cylinders are even or within 10 percent of the highest reading cylinder algud otherwise some problems with valve seals, piston rings or head gasket depending!!!

- also check near the fuse box and all earths on the vehicle

- find another standard ecu

- get it on the diognostic tester local mechanical shop

- use the red and green lights on the ecu to manually check for fault codes if possible on this model

- look for hole in engine lol

anyways if all this doesnt work or you would like some furthur information feel free to ask

I did the screwdriver to ear thing on the injectors and they are all firing

(I pretty much guessed that anyway because of the unburnt fuel coming out the rear)

I tested all the leads with a multimeter and all are good including earths.

So I tried a coilpack and plug on each cylinder. No spark 1, 3, and 5.

It's got to be between the igniter and this guy

Actually, I'm starting to think that it may be an earth problem, but whoever did the GTS-R engine swap needs their arse kicked.

When I took the kick panel off, the ECU just fell out. It wasn't bolted in, just floating around behind there. :D

have you had any luck with this?

im having this EXACT same problem with my RB25 but im running a powerfc

cylinders 1,3 and 5 are dead.....

we're fearing it might be the ecu since the ignitors are built into my coil packs

it's definately getting fuel since i pretty much had a huge puddle of fuel on the ground after testing

  • 3 weeks later...

Made another discovery.

That looks to me like a removeable Eprom.

So It's definitely been fiddled with at some stage.

At the moment I am leaning towards the ecu being cactus.

It would be strange to have 1,3, and 5 out from the wiring.

I have another red cam cover ECCS ecu coming next week so I'll plug that in and start her up.

3 cylinders:- it's the wiring.

6 cylinders:- it's the ecu.

I'll post the results.

Lucky this car is my hobby car and not the everyday.

Actually think I may have found the problem

Looks to me like the board has seen a bit of heat, bit hard to see here....

Here it is a little closer

And this is the culprit on the other side

And with the retainer plate removed

I don't know if it can be fixed, but I'll be making enquiries before it ends up here

    • Can't you put the pistons to TDC and then do the valve seals? Or will the drop down too far to pull them back up?
    • One thing I can tell you is, do it properly the first time. If you encounter unexpected problems just let the car sit for a week or two if you have to get some other parts or figure stuff out.  I'd have said go and use as many OEM parts as possible but since you want to change the turbo later on a custom kit is probably the better choice. Since I have no experience with RB25 just compare parts diagrams and images before buying a line kit and it should be easy to see if it has everything you need. Amayama has very good parts diagrams and part number lists, that is what I used a bunch to figure out what I might need. And don't forget to plan ahead and possibly renew other stuff that's easy to get to while you're in there doing the turbo lines. Happy wrenching
    • Update 4:   Hi all, good news. Engine is running and all the gaskets and seals seem to be working as intended. No leaks so far, even the JB Weld seems to hold. I flushed out the old coolant a few times and put in fresh coolant, not Nissan stuff, I decided to try the Ravenol Protect FL22, they claim it works for a wide variety of JDM cars and the opinions on it by some people were pretty good. And it has the nice poison green color! And man am I glad I bought a coolant system tester earlier this year, vacuum filling works wonders on this engine. I can definitely recommend this to anyone still doing it the old school way. All you need is compressed air supply. Will have to do a small test drive as soon as I can, I removed the gauge cluster again as the tacho needle was still bouncing around a bit but it was much better than before already.  I also found some cracks on all 4 tires inner and outer sidewalls. Apparently these tires should 't be parked on for extended periods or be kept under 0 degrees during storage, which I did not know. Clearly the previous owner didn't look into those details either, he probably bought them just cause they are cool semi-slicks. I'm just wondering how tf I am supposed to reach 30-80 degree tire temperatures on the public road consistenly, these tires were never going to work for my use case. I'll probably order Continental SportContact7 ones as these are the best allround summer tire available right now and I don't think I'll need anything crazier for now. Do let me know if you have experience with various tires and which ones you recommend.
    • You have no idea how many goddamn boxes I received these past three months haha Most have been put to use by now though, luckily
    • Not going to pretend I didn't do a bit of junky work this time around, but mostly due to the fact that some things I am not willing to spend days fixing right now, like wiring. I try to do most things properly the first time around.
