I just went through again, got a double defect. They weren't overly picky but did get done for some things which ive been through with every time before... by the SAME inspector. hahaha

But then again, this time my car looked like an absolute "p i g" (why does it keep changing "p i g" to cop? damn you moderators and admins!!! :P) (primer, stencils sprayed all over the car, fiberglass guards, bolt on flares, holes in body pop riveted closed) so i dont blame them for being extra picky and careful about the defect.

In the end I got through the next day, had to do an overnight diff change over, take my fiberglass guards off (been through before and passed...) and some really minor things like reverse lights and guage.

As long as youre friendly, honest and dont have obvious shit on there then you should be fine.

And for the record, everything on the car can be engineered, all thats involved is effort, time and money.

What about all the times you called up Marko asking about the fiberglass guards... and they said it was fine...and look what happened.... and the woop woop with my last car got through with hsi fiberglass guards.. its all full of shit. I called up and they said my whole fiberglass conversion is fine and then i spoke to another dude and his like umm yeah umm it should be fine but I would recommend to buy a carbon fiber bonnet and bring it in with that.. i dont really know anymore.. lol everyone talks this and that but now your allowed to go through regency with a carbon fiber bonnet.. sick im happy haha.

Carbon fibre is illegal full stop. It splinters unlike fibreglass and causing unnecessary risk. You'll never get through with it now. If you paint it, you might stand a chance, but they'll laugh you out of the sheds if you roll in with it showing. Also expect full engineers cert for the rest of your bodywork depending on who you get.

Fibreglass guards can be on the car, but they will now require an engineer to sign off that the eye brow heights are the same as factory, or if they are different, what the new ones are.

That's all mine needed with the Neo conversion, but they specified an engineer must do the test.....which is what I meant by having to get it 'engineered....maybe I didn't use the right terminology :) Anyway, the whole point is that it was easy to get through and make it all legal.

Fair sure they need to be ADR approved. Bonnets have to be designed to fold up in a crash otherwise they will go through the windscreen and take off your head.

And just any carbon fibre isnt ok. It needs to be engineered no matter what. As mentioned before carbon fibre shatters and splinters on impact. Different types of mixtures and materials added change this but majority of the stuff you can get is china shit which isnt safety rated at all.

I dont care what people on the phone say... obviously they aren't the ones doing the inspections so whatever they say means sweet f**k all, inspectors want engineers certificates, not word of mouth.

And to add to that, when you do apply your car up for modification the same people you talk to send you a list of things that you need to engineer before you go for a final inspection. Theres no way around it...

so can you you have a apexi safc, tint, steering wheel and boost controller engineered? if so what kind of money i got to pay?

You have to ring an engineer dude, like Rory Thompson for example.

That's good to hear. You now have a 50/50 chance of getting through with it.

Don't take anything they say at vehicle standards with a grain of salt.

No to SAFC as there is no regulations yet as to altering air/fuel maps etc. Boost controller not legal fitting into the same category.

Tint strictly needs less than 35% and most glass has natural tint, so 35% film won't work. To get around this you need a medical cert saying its due to migraines/headaches caused by the sun.

Steering wheel needs to be ADR approved and can't remove an airbag.

mine went through a couple of times when we had to do that tier three and all that shit... car was absolutely bog stock standard.. but the things they picked on wer things i couldve gotten defected for anyway.... my old boss took a BA falcon XT bog stock standard 6 cylinder manual but with a FPV bodykit and rims on it.... and the inspector.. after popping the bonnet asked if it was turbo... he said "are you f**king serious?? your an inspector and your asking me that??"... he's also seen an inspector get belted by a guy who was getting a motorbike inspected... brought it in on a trailer... and they defected the car towing it...

The inspector had a hard time finding the engine number, until I pointed out how obvious it was. Then he asked where my engineers certificate was for the turbo modification. I told him it was the turbo model from factory. He didn't believe me, blatantly refused to believe that, so I told him to go look it up. Looked it up on his system and got proven wrong. Then proceeded to ask a few questions about my 200B which I towed the bike there with. The 200B was fitted with an SR20DE engine and SC14 supercharger. However, the whole thing was engineered and regency approved ... much to the inspectors disappointment. :)

He was certainly looking for something that day to redeem himself with.

yrs ago when if ya got defected ya had to go to thebarton barracks on a sat and line up on the road outside till it was your turn to get called in for inspection .

a bloke in front of me had a bike on a trailer cause the bike had a defect and had run out of rego when they called him in he took the bike off the trailer but he could not get it too start cause the battery had gone flat .

the coppers doing the inspection push started him out of the gates onto the road and the bike started and the guy road it back into the compound . they cleared the defect but then booked him for riding a unregistered bike out on the road lol .

this guy went off his nut next thing they carted him off lol funny as lol

Actually, about 4 years ago my prized TLR got defected for its indicators (which were stock), despite the fact I had a full race exhaust system on it :( When I took it to Regency to clear the defect, I took it on the trailer. They asked me to unload it ... but refused to help me unload it, despite seeing I had a leg injury at the time. There was no way they would let me drive the car with trailer and bike into the station, the bike had to come off. All my other encounters, they'd been happy to inspect the bikes on the trailer or help me unload them where necessary. I had some strangers help me with unloading the TLR that time. Small thing, but it annoyed me at the time. :(

    • I certainly fall into the annoyed camp, but glad to hear that if it's happening at low boost then I'm not likely going to blow a turbo and end up with metal shards in my oil. Just feels like it prevents me from really driving it without hesitation and "peak" performance. Wonder if it's the VCAM, it did an impressive job of shifting the torque curve and faster spool, but maybe now it's "too fast" and there's too much air for how open the throttle is.  Based on some other threads, will also do some reading on synchronizing the actuators. They are the default actuators that come on the Garrett's and I would think they would be set the same coming from the factory, but if the turbos don't actually work exactly the same way at the same time as previously mentioned, it would be worth making sure the actuators are actuating together properly
    • I went down this rabbit hole before, ended up sourcing a motor from the UK (I'm in Japan) which also didn't function correctly. With the original motor, I disassembled it and reassembled it and it works somewhat, sometimes. What I could deduce from all my screwing around is that there is calibration of the gears on the inside of the motor and two ramps on the main gear which activate switches that operate the motor and move the sunroof either to retract into the roof or tilt. Where I got stuck was that, it seemed in my case that one or both of the switches that are activated by the ramp on the gear did not always activate and thus the motor did not move, causing it to sometimes not retract or tilt (apologies, I've forgotten which way it didn't work.).  Of course this part is discontinued at Nissan now, it's the same part in the S15 but no other models. I also contacted the manufacturer of the component for schematics - forgot the name, they're based in Gifu - but they declined to share the information due to being bound by an NDA, sadly. Looking through my pictures now, it seems I last had a crack at this in 2022. See, I so kindly wrote "open" and "close" next to the switches. If you figure it out, please do tell me. Those little switches, with the red buttons may need to be replaced.

    • Hi guys, just after some guidance with an R34 sunroof that has stopped working correctly. It still opens and closes perfectly fine, but it no longer tilts/vents up or down. As a result, the rear of the glass now sags a bit as it drops down slightly in order to retract into the roof, but now it can't pop upwards into a flush position. I’ve probed the pins on the back of the switch connector with a multimeter and it seems like both switches (for open/close and tilt/vent) still work correctly. Any ideas on what it could be, or where I should even start in terms of diagnosing? I'm sure someone's had this issue before but I haven't been able to find anything online relating to this specific issue, most of the issues are with the seals leaking or the motor failing entirely. Thanks in advance!
