Hi all.

Just a couple of quick questions that a hope some one can help with, I just got my self a R32 gtr front cut for the main reason that my engine ate a ceramic turbo and on pulling it apart i found that it is of pull type clutch my original car is push type. Ive searched and found that it is around 2/93 or later. This is where my questions start, Is there any difference between the inside of the gearboxes or transfer cases?

Also is there any way to tell if its a 32 or 33 gearbox or are they the same?

From what i have worked out i can either change front plate, fork and bell housing to convert but is there any changes in the hydralic systems between the two? apart from the slave cylinder.

Lastly can anyone confirm if the oil pump drive on the crank was changed at the same time? I will probably have the sump off so i might check this anyway.

Thanks

yes i have searched and found heaps of stuff on converting one to the other but nothing about if there is anything different inside the boxes and transfer cases. Or if there was any changes to the hydraulic systems. People use one in the other and it works but are all the part numbers the same, I cant find very much info on the pull type 32s in the manal or on the forums.

I just thought that somone might have been through this and knew the differences. Like it feels to me that the pull type flywheel is quite a bit lighter than the push one or has somone put a aftermarket one in. It doesnt look like it though. I will put them on the scales and see how much tomorrow.

Thanks

The boxes were improved over the years, more synchros on third gear and other stuff IIRC....If you have a choice of any box get a series 3 R33 one. Some of the older gearbox parts are no longer available and when you rebuild you may need to buy extra parts to work with the series 3 R33 spares.

Stock flywheels are 10kgs. I've seen aftermarket ones at 5.5 and 4.5kgs.

Thanks.

I weighted both the flywheels and the one from the pull clutch is 6kg and the my original one is 10 like you said. It seems strange that it would have a light weight one and still have a genuine nissan clutch on it.

the thing that i have been trying to work out for certain is if the transfer cases in the pull type 32s was the same as the early ones or if it runs a small amount of preload like the 33s. Im sure my push type 32 has 2 drain plugs on the trans case but the pull only has the one and im trying to make sure i know if will still be ok to run on the dyno with only the fuse pulled. Thats why i was asking if you could tell the difference from the out side.

The preload in the 33's is hydraulic apparently. The internals for the transfer's from pre 2/93 to post in R32's should be the same. I have a 93 model with pull type and have done a transfer case rebuild using the pre 93 manual, internals are identical. The bell housings are also interchangeable between pull and push types

Thanks doo doo. Can you remember how many drain plugs your transfer case has on it? It doesnt really matter any more but just trying to work out some of the minor differences. My early one deffinately has two and the pull only has the one. Seems to me to be a funny thing to change if almost everything else is the same.

To change from push to pull you will need all the hardware and the front cover with the pivot pin will need to be changed. I would check the engine itself to answer the crank question, engines get changed so often. The differences externally on the trans and TC are: The 33 GTR or late model 32 tranny will have 2 vent holes on top of the bell housing, there will be 2 locations to mount a push or pull type clutch slave cylinder, hole may not be tapped. The transfer case will have one drain hole for the oil. Internally the later transmission uses different synchros and there are a few things different in the TC case but nothing preventing you from using, it may even be uprated.

The speedo drive on the 33 transfer Ed? Can you swap in the mechanical R32 one? (Oh and yes the bellhousings plus the associated pull/push hardware that sits inside it are interchangeable, sorry) What Ed said about drain holes.

Thanks guys it should just be a matter of working out if i want to do the bell housing swap or put it in as is and use it as a pull type. Being a late 32 box by the look of it, it still runs a mechanical speedo drive. I will get the front cut all stripped out and then get my car back in the garage and check all the minor parts like the speedo drive and make sure its the same. I was just trying to get a heads up on if anything was really going to stuff me or not.

Thanks again i should be good from here on in.

What will happen is that once the stock ECU sees more airflow than it expects it will add a heap of fuel and pull a heap of timing to be safe because it can't understand how it could get that much air without there being an issue. You will see clouds of black smoke and it won't pull hard through the midrange and top end. So, overall it will be a bit frustrating but should be OK. If you are still nervous set the base timing back 2o through the CAS, but it will be even more sluggish everywhere. As said above through...this is not my guarantee your engine won't be blown into a million pieces, leaving you looking for very hard to find parts A better idea is get a computer with logging ASAP, wire in a wide band O2 sensor and a use remote tuner. I've done multiple cars this way and while it is not as good as a specific tune on a dyno they can get it 90% right. I'd suggest if you can afford an R33 GTR these days you can afford an ECU and tune. And if you can't afford that you sure won't be able to afford the rebuild if it goes bad in the meantime,.
    • Yeah it would be nice if someone took the time to put that sort of information together, but there are a lot of variations in looms. I think you are making this way hard for yourself if you just want to get it running....sourcing an SR20 with the right wiring will be a billion times easier than matching the RB loom to an S15 chassis. If you do end up going this way, you just need to trace every wire in the loom with a multimeter, 95% of them will go to a location you can confirm at the ECU.....and then post it up for the next person who needs it
    • Just top it up with water, and keep a general idea of how much you added. It is normal for water to be pushed into and pulled out of the reservoir through the cap, and it should not be more than half full or it will be likely to overflow when hot. Any decent mechanic can do a pressure test of the cooling system to confirm if you have a leak. Keep in mind if it is only leaking a little and when hot it may well evaporate before you see it hit the ground
    • I'd ask the shop what they used and use that. Mixing coolants is sometimes OK, sometimes not, and you have know the details of each coolant to know whether it's a good idea or not.
    • Is it alright to top up with just another green coolant?
