What is a kit for an R32 GT-R worth?

Cheers,

Lucien.

*Bump*

Still interested.... And now for a stupid question: do we have to buy one "kit" per light, or does it have the all the necessary bits for both headlights?

whats so good about this HID thing, whats it do..

why cant i just go to the shops and get some super bright bulbs and stuck them in?

HID/Xenon are brighter. They also are a lot colder than standard bulbs for the same brightness.

LW.

yeah but why is it like $400?

cant i just go down to repco or somethign and buy some bulbs (bright ones)

Because they are completely different from standard bulbs and have a different wiring harness, etc.

Have a closer look at my headlights next time mindflux.. coz I have factory HIDs on me car. :P

They are also pretty cool when you first turn them on from cold. :P

Off the bat, the "HID look-alike" halogen bulbs that are available everywhere are generally junk. If you want to upgrade your halogen bulbs with other non-junk halogen bulbs, Philips and Osram are the best brands to look at. I have previously purchased from Power Bulbs.

Everyone (yes, everyone) needs to read the following information:

http://www.intellexual.net/hid.html

There is a lot of information and misinformation on HID lighting, and also a lot of false advertising.

If you are not one for reading, I will try to summarise what I feel are the most important points I have picked up.

Firstly - colour temperatures above 4100k sacrifice light output. I will repeat that - colour temperatures above 4100k sacrifice light output. With higher temperatures, you go from white to blue and finally towards violet, to the point where there will be less light on the road than with run-of-the-mill halogen bulbs. Furthermore, blue light is fatiguing on eyesight, and also produces glare which will affect other drivers. The above linked page has pictures that demonstrate this very effectively.

So why is there demand for these higher temperatures? Well, partially because a lot of people see the higher number and assume it is better (possibly equating it to light output) but mainly because people desire the blue/purple tinge that is present in OEM HID setups. This is the next key point - that tinge of colour is caused not by the gas discharge bulbs, but by the headlight structure itself, a projector arrangement, and can be seen only from certain angles. The light being put out by OEM HID setups is still pure white. However, when you use a high temperature bulb, you end up with that colour coming straight from the bulb - it appears blue/purple from all angles, and the light on the road will also be that colour. Remember, this is now at the expense of light output, and fatigue on the eyes of all observers.

Building on that, the projector headlight is a strongly desired part of a HID lighting setup, either by obtaining headlight clusters for your vehicle that use projector optics, or by taking a projector/reflector assembly and fitting it into your existing headlight clusters. They are not necessarily essential, but without it, you may get an incorrect beam pattern, with hotspots and/or areas with no light coverage (commonly right in front of you, where you need light most). It might also be possible that your light will be incorrectly aimed and dazzle other drivers.

I would regard that as the key information when considering HID lighting. I am fortunate to have projector optics as standard in my headlight clusters, so I need only install HID bulbs and ballast. I have decided to purchase from XenonDepot.com, as they have Philips ballast, professionally rebased Philips bulbs, and a good quality relay harness, in addition to being well priced - US$469 shipped.

Further reading can be found in the HID section of the Automotive Lighting FAQ. If anyone has any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Ive just got add on bulbs, seem to do the job EXTREMELY WELL

PIAA are considered the best, and they are value for money REPLACEMENT Bulbs, IE TAKE THE OLD ONES OUT THROW THESE IN...simple

If you want to purcahse a kit i suggest you investigate them, as i think they are a waste of money...when the REPLACEMENT bulbs are good enough!

Frankly id rather spend the extra $300+ on something else..

Remember these replacement bulbs are 10 times better then the stockies obvously!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Check ebay for latest prices guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Search PIAA H1

YOU MUST GET H1...

Mate its your decision my opinion is that the kits are a waste of money!

Ive got the bulbs = great!

If you want the kits i suggest you investigate it further as i think the REPLACEMENT BULBS do exactly the same job for a 1/4 of the price!

1 set of bulbs will cost you around $100 compared to a kit which is $450+ labor...

your answer lucien

With the kits you get the proper SIDE projectors/cluster, run a search on previous threads on installations and differences etc, but essentially your using your stock projector/cluster with an aftermarket HID bulb which has been designed for the stock projector! therefore the projection beam can be weaker compared to a proper HID kit with the correct HID projectors and CORRECT HID BULB

If you think its worth the extra $300+ $$$ then go for it, if you cbf and just want to test out the bulbs which do the job

Ok to put it simply if you want HID Bulbs buy these

If you want a proper kit buy the kit

If you want to see the differences i suggest you check out a new beamer or Audi or merc with HID KIT and then see the difference on a random JAP or rice car with replacement bulbs!

Youll notice that the expensive audis etc the beam is more crisp/clear and obovosuly more powerful

The replacement bulbs which use the stock cluster etc is still bloody good compared to the stock yellow bulbs they are also illegal i think if they contain blue and they are obvously not as good as the HID KIT

Right, got it! :D Thanks. I notice there are a number of models in the Super Vision range (if babblefish didn't munch the translation) -- do you know how they differ? The kit you list, the "8000K", I assume is designed for the 8000K bulbs (ie. purple/blue tinge)? Can you get 5/6000K kits? I am basically after brightness not rice looks.

LW.

Definately can get the 5/6000k kits

The 8000k kits are really nice i think youll find that the audis and beamers etc do have a slight tinge of blue therefore they could be using 7000k kits definately not 8000 as 8000 have just been released...like 4 weeks ago or so

But it is illegal to have the blue tinge so its not worth the hassle, so dtry and buy a 5000 or 4000 kit....

I can located a kit for you mate, just have to wait a few hours till i get home lol, im at work using the net, if i get caught using the forums...

A kit will only come with 2 bulbs therefore you cannot operate your lights on both high and low beam...

youd have to purchase another 2 replacement bulbs to operate high/low, but how often do you use your highbeamers???

I.e you need 4 bulbs to run high/low OR 2 Bulbs to run ONE either Low OR high

Cool, if you could get a price that would be great. If I read this page correctly, the H4 kit from Super Vision has both high and low beam:

    • I certainly fall into the annoyed camp, but glad to hear that if it's happening at low boost then I'm not likely going to blow a turbo and end up with metal shards in my oil. Just feels like it prevents me from really driving it without hesitation and "peak" performance. Wonder if it's the VCAM, it did an impressive job of shifting the torque curve and faster spool, but maybe now it's "too fast" and there's too much air for how open the throttle is.  Based on some other threads, will also do some reading on synchronizing the actuators. They are the default actuators that come on the Garrett's and I would think they would be set the same coming from the factory, but if the turbos don't actually work exactly the same way at the same time as previously mentioned, it would be worth making sure the actuators are actuating together properly
    • I went down this rabbit hole before, ended up sourcing a motor from the UK (I'm in Japan) which also didn't function correctly. With the original motor, I disassembled it and reassembled it and it works somewhat, sometimes. What I could deduce from all my screwing around is that there is calibration of the gears on the inside of the motor and two ramps on the main gear which activate switches that operate the motor and move the sunroof either to retract into the roof or tilt. Where I got stuck was that, it seemed in my case that one or both of the switches that are activated by the ramp on the gear did not always activate and thus the motor did not move, causing it to sometimes not retract or tilt (apologies, I've forgotten which way it didn't work.).  Of course this part is discontinued at Nissan now, it's the same part in the S15 but no other models. I also contacted the manufacturer of the component for schematics - forgot the name, they're based in Gifu - but they declined to share the information due to being bound by an NDA, sadly. Looking through my pictures now, it seems I last had a crack at this in 2022. See, I so kindly wrote "open" and "close" next to the switches. If you figure it out, please do tell me. Those little switches, with the red buttons may need to be replaced.
    • It says 300ZX, does that make it an Aus delivered car? Funny how back in the day I just couldn't care less about Z32's and these days I am just in love with them. Back when Nissan was into pushing the envelope. 🤣
    • Hi guys, just after some guidance with an R34 sunroof that has stopped working correctly. It still opens and closes perfectly fine, but it no longer tilts/vents up or down. As a result, the rear of the glass now sags a bit as it drops down slightly in order to retract into the roof, but now it can't pop upwards into a flush position. I’ve probed the pins on the back of the switch connector with a multimeter and it seems like both switches (for open/close and tilt/vent) still work correctly. Any ideas on what it could be, or where I should even start in terms of diagnosing? I'm sure someone's had this issue before but I haven't been able to find anything online relating to this specific issue, most of the issues are with the seals leaking or the motor failing entirely. Thanks in advance!
