Hey guys,

this is our humble DIY and Detail attempt, we had a go at fabricating a dual-bucket dolly, aswell as a full hand detail of the car.

we drew our inspiration from the double dollys that they sell in america:

http://www.autogeek.net/double-dolly.html

the crazy price and the rediculous shipping made it impossible to purchase from the states so we decided to give it a go

supercheap auto had 20L industrial buckets for sale so my mate and i decided to have a crack at fabricating the dual-bucket dolly. we picked up two buckets, aswell a two sets of stands and wheels. took about an hour's worth of labour but we were pretty pleased with the result.

we basically mounted the the buckets on the stands via some rope which we weaved through the holes we drilled in the buckets, the total cost was $32 and about an hours labour

props to my mate jono who basically engineered the project as i am useless at DIY.

your feedback is much appreciated as we are just rookies

Ok next for show and tell, we gave my mate's 1994 BMW 320i E36 a decent going over

The process

1. initial snowing and wash with Meguiars Gold Class wash - using the dual-bucket dolly system with moderately warm water via microfibre mitts.

2. the complete claying of the car, using Meguiars Quik Clay - this included all panels, glass and wheels.

3. Repeated the wash procedure indicated in step 1

4. went over the car with Meguiars Paint Cleaner to correct minor imperfections and to prepare the surface for Meguiars Deep Crystal Polish

5. Polished by hand using Meguiars Deep Crystal Polish, buffed off with Meguiars Quik Detailer

6. Repeat the wash procedure to remove any polish residue to prepare the surface for a layer of wax

7. 2 Layers of Meguiars Gold Class Liquid Wax, buffed off with Meguiars Ultimate Quik Detailer

Here are the pics, comments and advice are again much appreciated - just bare in mind all products were applied by hand:

We are hoping to move on to some better products (menzerna polishes and sealants, optimum waxes and clay magic clay bars) as we are just running through the remainder of our rookie product.

We are also hoping to invest in a Festool Rotex or short of that a good quality Bosch orbital and getting into some real cut-compound polishes.

Thanks a heap for reading guys, hope you enjoy the pics as much as we did taking them :D

Good work guys, I have the dual bucket dollie with dual grit guards and they are definatly the go although shipping costs arent cheap to get them over from america. Menzerna polish and my festool ROP with good pads is some of the best money ive ever spent. Also recomend grabing some zaino car wash which i really like and now use instead of meguiars GC.

cheers for the feedback man, if you don't mind could you please pm me (or post up here) the price you paid for the dolly? i had a look few months back and it was gonna cost over $200 which is crazy, just the dolly and the buckets with grit guards were 120, which although quite nuts i would fork out for, but the shipping was like 150$ which is way too much.

also what were the noticeable differences with the zaino wash? is it worth the extra coin?

cheers,

danny

hey man you can buy them from waxit in australia, theres a branch in queensland you can order them from, they've branched out to melbourne aswell so postage could be cheaper for you from there.

you can also make them from, milkcrates which is a heaps good idea, or get those circular oven stands like the ones you get with the flavourwave turbo-ovens on tv all the time, just hunt around cheap chinese shops or kitchen-ware places

hope that helps,

danny

I'd love to know where to get grit guards - I've rung around places - nobody seems to sell 'em

I have realitives who sent it over for me.. ended up costing just under $300 for double bucket dolly, buckets with GG and the lid/seats for them.

I found the zaino wash worth it. I find the finsh i get is alot nicer. Plus i also find the product to water ratio is less so a small bottle also last a fair while.

    • Its a 2002 vr-x four VQ25DET, silver. Coil overs, lowered, polished alloys and sport exhaust. Bit of a project, was sitting in a shed for a while but runs and drives great.
    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
