Hi all! I think i will go down the CDI route. Autronic sm4 with Cdi 500r to be exact. And i was wondering what would be the prettiest way to mount them in a BNR32? i would still like to use the RB26 coil pack cover to have a more stealthy and cleaner look. Is this still possible? I have purchased some LS1 coils which i got cheaply. Is there some way i could mount these (in a cradle etc) and still have it aesthetically pleasing? Where can i get a cradle for the coils? where should the cradle be mounted? is there a way around this? I guess the coil pack cover isnt essential, but id just like to keep it if i can. If anyone has pics of their setups, could you please share them with me?

cheers

chris

ls1 coils will explode. they have interal igniters.

i have spent ages trying to find a propper "cdi" spec coil for my autronic. i have been using s4 13b 2 post coils. the 1ggze 2 post ones are good to, aswell as gto tt cols.

i dont like the idea of running 2 coils in parallel for waste spark. each coil will be getting halve the energy. but it has been made to work well with the factory 26 coils.

for cdi you want the lowest inductance coil you can find. higher inductance makes good spark in normal transistor ignition, but for cdi they take to long to saturate. they work but not ideal.

motobike coils are the gun thing but ive yet to test any.

in your case id just use the factory coils wired in parallel.

having said all that, i can get a 3" spark from my mazda/denso 13b coils. but they are really big.

Mercury marine coils are the go for a CDI system (the same coil used on a 2.5 2 stroke mercury outboard). Have used them on another car that i have built with good success. These are the coils recomended by MoTec for their CDI8 ignition system. Will have to enquire about costing for you. I will be able to make a nice neat mount for you in keeping with the quality of the rest of the build. But if anyone has picks of their mouning set up would still be interesting to see how other people would approach it.

The ls2/yukon coils would have been a better choice. Check for on google I guess, these are a couple I found.

A few references on how you could set them up. :)

they have inbuilt ignitors and will go pop/bang with CDI.

Yeah no sh$%, that was in reference to his ls1 coils and how he could mount them. He pbly could have just used the ls2/yukon truck coils without going cdi as it's 3 times more powerful according to data all over the net.

the heat treatment's car gtr ran the mercury's with a boot ontop of the plugs and a rod through the hole in the coil's

i paid around $70 each for mine

I use Splitfire with the CBI500R and still had no problem (misfire or start up) with E85 and 2bars of boost.

How much boost are you planning to run mate?

The more you deviate from a stock setup the harder it will be to diagnose problem when it arise.

My Splitfires are 7 years old now, so I need to buy coil packs either way. I'm also going to run vipec xps- cdi unit. If I'm buying coil packs anyway, I might as well get coil packs designed for cdi...

I'm planning to run 25psi and upto 250hp worth of nitrous, so I need a gooood ignition system.

cheers

    • 1/8NPT drill size = 8.7mm. Since the hole got messed up by me, it’s probably around 9mm.    So 1/4” NPT would be next step. A drill size of around 11mm would be preferred there which is not way of my M12 (drill 10.5mm and tap M12 threads)

    • Why are you so adamant on going M12? Why not follow Brad (GTSBoy) suggestion. You're talking moving from a 1/8" size, to a 1/2" effectively. 4 times bigger. Why skip the commonly available sizes in between? The bigger you go, the more likely you are to strip the threads out at a later date, as guaranteed, someone will put a huge spanner on the M12 and really tighten it up, and you're only in thin wall, so not a lot of threads to engage!
    • Hi. Yeah thanks. Car is already at tuners and it staying there to resolve "many" issues they do not like. So it is in a good hands. Getting a good tune on that Nistune ECU too so the car would be good. Just needs a little tune up and love.
    • Probably gonna remove manifold and turbo. I’m not sure if I can get M12 x 1.5 air tight. Could use high temp Loctite 246 or something similar, but I don’t know. Maybe it’s just best to remove everything again and weld an 1/8NPT on there instead.
