Thanks for the clarification.

Oh and to note I dont take a moral stand one way or the other on these devices, I just wanted to see what goes down once you get caught with one.

I am pretty sure the " parking sensor " excuses wont fly with the cops./

What's the fine ?

Over East I've heard its $1000 on the spot and they confiscate it.

Ouch

I think it would be more of a charge than a fine..

Western Australia, WA - radar detector laws

Currently there is no legislation relating to radar detector use, sale or ownership. Therefore radar detectors are only legal to SELL, OWN and USE in Western Australia. Laser Jammers should be considered illegal to use, however, there is no specific law against ownership and usage would be possibly considered hindering police. This includes parking sensors that are also laser jammers.

If you get caught with one you will get charged with something under the Telecommunications Act as transmitting on those frequencies is a BIG no-no.

If you install a device with the intention of preventing the police from doing their job, you may come across some over zealous officers who are keen to go down the long path of proving your original intention was to pervert the course of justice. e.g. hinder. If you intended to enjoy greater parking ease, then you have not broken the law. It's very hard for a prosecutor to prove what your intentions were at that time. There is no need to flick switches as the sensor is constantly scanning for obstructions in front of or behind you. If it detects that it is intefering with another system it will shut itself down after 8 seconds to prevent intefering with that device. It's worth noting that many other items use the same sort of laser, e.g. surveying equipment and even (not available in Australia) Nissan's adaptive cruise control.

Ok some good points brought up there, but no real life tales of woe yet.

The parking sensor ones are a good point, but what about the old ones that are specifically made for blocking , It would be hard to plead your case then.

Many of them turn themselves off after 4 seconds, so thats another good thing going for them .

+1 on what fine would be. i dont think it would be pretty tho.

i also was thinking if u can turn it off via a switch or something in ur dash, how can they convict you?

(dont say a cop could spot it in the engine bay etc, they dont know the difference between a catch can air breather n a bov)

Just curious to see what has happened to you if you got busted using a laser jammer to overcome speed guns/Traps.

I am fairly sure they are not legal , but just wanted to hear your story as to what happened after you got pulled over/caught.

Depends on what frequency they work on. Some of the laser parking sensors work on the 904nm wavelength which is basically a 'free to air' kind of band, and means you are perfectly within your right to transmit on that frequency. If you just happened to have your 'parking sensor' working on the same frequency and it just so happen to jam their speed gun, it's their bad luck.

    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
    • Well they got my money but they are not getting my gearbox !
    • It's needed for rolling idle up, and I think it is a decider on VCT also.
    • I mean, not really. Link ECU's can absolutely still have errors from the ECU thinking it's getting a sensor it's not expecting. I would imagine the speed at the ECU level in Nistune does absolutely nothing anyway? I assume the ECU does not do any fancy TC stuff with regards to front+rear wheel speed or anything of that like anyway. Someone who uses Nistune may be more fluent in it.
