Black Screen Fans Running At 100%

Hey guys inspired by the tech support in other threads I thought I would post my PC issue here.

Currently my computer is crashing randomly when i'm playing random games, the screen will go black, the monitor stand by light will come on and the fans will run at 100%.

First off the relevant specs

Athlon X2 4800+

Nvidia 9600GT

4GB of RAM

Windows XP Pro

Brand new 750W PSU

I at first assumed it was overheating but on closer inspection the temperatures are all well within safe tolerances.

CPU 65-70 when playing games

GPU 55-60 has an aftermarket fan set up

Drivers are all up to date. The stange thing is it happend just before when I was playing Star Trek: BC which came out in like 2003 yet still crashed.

I am a bit of noob when it comes to PSU voltages, in all my years of working on computers I have only twice encountered any PSU problems. My PSU +12V is reading as 12.35-12.42 and I think that may be an issue, although some say as long as its within 5% of what its supposed to be all is well.

Ayways any help from the SAU tech support team would be greatly appreciated.

Well you say the 750W PSU is new - did the problem occur before or after its installation?

Do you have another PSU around? 750W PSU for a 9600GT is the most ridiculous overkilll, you could get away with a 450w PSU.

Fans going to 100% is just because there is a lockup, it's not the actual problem, just a result of it.

Yeah I know its overkill, the old one was dying recently and so I got the 750W based on the new CPU/Mobo/GPU/RAM set up I will be getting shortly.

Yeah I could try the old PSU it still works just not very well, the problem did occur before I installed the new power supply.

Is 12.42V on the 12V an issue? unfourtunetly I dont have much experience when it comes to that sort of thing.

PS. forgot to add that when I turn on the computer the CPU fan quite loud until about 10 seconds into the Windows boot screen, that has been occuring for a while now but because the computer is on more or less 24-7 its only been a mild annoyance.

The 12v should be fine. As has been said the fans are pretty much unrelated though you could try running MSI Afterburner or similar and manually setting the fan speeds and see if it still changes. If it still does it is probably crashing, attempting to reset and sitting at pre-POST where fans can be at 100% by default.

I will adjust the fan speeds with Riva Tuner and see how I go, what could be causing the crash and make it sit at pre-POST?

If it was me I would be using driver sweeper, removing everything and going online and downloading everything up to date, IMO looks like video card is just crashing and causing system to just lock up, maybe if you have already tried new drivers maybe try a older version of them.

Also, what brand of PSU is it? I had a similar thing happen when trying to cheap out on a computer I was building and using an Ebay PSU, piece of shit also ended up frying the cheapass mobo I had gotten LOL. lesson learnt there!

Yeah I checked the connections, i've done a bit of help desking too and I know how often it can be something stupid.

Its Aywun Megapower 750W PSU, so on the cheap side but definetly a lot better than a elcheapo ebay job.

After a quick search the general concensus is they are rubbish, possibly worse than Shaw and most likely lying about their 80+ certs. They can achieve decent efficiency it seems but that's only one part of PSU quality.

Yeah I know there not great, but they will do for the intended purpose and it has a 3 year warranty. My last ebay PSU lasted 3 years before dying so I was pretty pleased with that.

As far as my problem goes i've reinstalled the latest drivers and used Riva Tuner to up the fan speed no problems yet. Although the fan still spools up hardcore when I restart or start up the computer.

It was still ocurring with my last PSU which I still have, also I dont have another PSU powerful enough I have a couple of old 300W units kicking around but nothing powerful enough for this computer.

If it's stopped with a higher fan speed it might be memory or VRMs overheating.

The 100% at startup is a card BIOS setting and is pretty normal.

Ye 100% on startup is normal for some setups.

Mine doesn't, depends on the card/BIOS i believe

Okay thanks the help guys its much appreciated . Hopefully when I get the new set up in the next couple of weeks this cease to be a problem anyway.
