Yesterday after work ,my car made a metallic noise ,and boost didn't go over cero after driving a bit more noise went away and boost was back,so I though that was it just a mere boost drop.

But this morning it happened again, noise ,no boost but no smoke or anything else and after 2 minutes all normal...but when i put my ear next to the pod i still can hear a metallic hsssss.so the louder noise looks to happen when car is cold

Now,that this mean my turbo is going to die?what could I espect to happen?

(I was thinking to do the 100000 Ks. service myself but now...)

My car is a 1999 S2 Stagea RS4V usually I run 10 psi of boost now I put it down to 7psi.(BTW miss wants to kill me for play with the boost) and I just put Motul 4100 (I know CHeap ass of me)around 1000 Ks ago...

Not really after the oil change ,I did it about a month ago or a bit more(Old stuff was black and Thick) and replaced it with Motul turbolight 4100 10W40 and RYCO Z442 oil filter...

Now it happens when the car is cold ,if I accelerate a couple of times it goes away but still there a bit...

If its not boosting it could be the wastegate but it should still boost up high in the revs. Im thinking its the bearings are shagged. Have you tried tightening all the manifold nuts?

The best fix may just be a garrett one.

Checked my oil and it's a bit black not as golden as when i put it...Is that bad or common?(Changed oil in my cars before but never checked the color after...)

The oil's job is to suspend all of the contaminants in your engine, this is why oil goes black. If it doesn't go black it isn't working.

usually a signal that the bearings in the turbo are cactus. the shaft has excessive play or float allowing the blades of the impeller to rub against the housing. only way to confirm this will be to pull the intake off the front of the turbo and give it a little wiggle (obviously with the car off!). a tiny bit of movement is normal, but anything significant is a problem.

Start reading here... linky

the whole page wouldnt hurt :D

Check oil level, check gaskets, check for vaccum leaks, check oil lines to the turbo.

Go to a mechanic.

Today I took the intake pipping to check if there was any play in the turbo's shaft and found nearly no play just a 1/2 mm. back and for but nothing sideways...

So,no smoke ,no oil leak *to the ouside of the turbo and no play just teh bloody metallic noice ...

*found some oil inside the pipping that goes to the SMIC and the pipping going to the throttle ,is that normal?

Thanks,Scott, but the bloody thing omly happens when it's cold :D ...after a while sounds normal :nyaanyaa:

Perhaps the turbine is rubbing until the housing expands with heat. It might be a simple as re centering the exhaust side, gives you a chance to check out the bearings while you're there...

Think you may be right in this one, thinking about it when i put the dump pipe , forced a bit to make it fit ...guess now it could had damage something with the time...need to go to a mechanic ...but i'm lazy  ,with little time and money :P

    • Hi all, Restoring r33 series 1 rb25det. All the heater hoses were on their way out, have replaced them and put it all back together. After testing I noticed a small leak from behind the head on the actual metal water line to the turbo when cars warm. I tried running a longer hose over it but it kept leaking...   I am about to take the (stock) manifold off again😔 to change the water line does any one have any lines they recommend? I was looking at Aeroflow Turbo Oil & Water Line Set but not sure what everyone else recommends. Car is completely stock but want to upgrade turbo eventually. it looks like ill have to disconnect a lot just to replace these lines so if there's anything else recommended to do please let me know. Thank you in advance!
    • From memory, on the R33 GTSt at least, while everyone says "It's not adjustable", I found when I changed clutches in mine, it just needed a small adjustment on the rod length. But be very wary here, as you could end up trying to push the pushrod in the master too far, or blowing out the slave.   Most likely though, if the master/slave isn't bypassing internally or leaking out, then the throw out is the wrong height compared to the fingers on the clutch, so when it moves to disengage the clutch, it isn't 100% disengaged. You can check part of this out too by jacking the car up, having the engine running, put your foot on the clutch and try to engage 1st gear. If it goes in pretty easy (Compared to the ground) and/or the wheels start turning a fair bit and it takes a bit too much brake pedal to bring them back to a stop, this is likely the issue.  I'm not sure if you can adjust the height of the forks etc in these though, it's been that long since I've touched any RB gearbox.
    • That's all good, I thought I was missing some interesting feature! Maybe @PranK can double check if that is something that is meant to be operating or not.
    • I hope that is not something that bad. From what i remember he said that only first gear is "hard" to get in and that he has couple of ideas what to try next but idk 😕  hope it is not gearbox out. I will let you know.
    • If it's not the hydraulics, it is probably gearbox back out. Usually as per @Duncan's post, or otherwise associated with not getting the throwout fork positioned correctly. All the way up to catastrophically bolting shit back together without it being aligned properly and wrecking the clutch/input shaft/flywheel/something else.
