I did a day at Mt Cotton driver training the other week, played on the skid pan etc BUT the day was nearly ruined by the old guy by the gate with his noise meter. One ute was told not to drive and I was warned to keep it quiet as well. The noise levels are a problem here in town but what about QR and the levels there or Willowbank. Does anyone here have a loud car and are there problems taking it to a track these days?

I dont want to organise a weekend outing to Lakeside only to be told to go home cause the car is noisey. Which tracks are noise friendly in SE QLD ?

Cheers

Lakeside can be pretty tough on noise, as there is a house within a stones throw from the main straight. Lakeside use 3-4 noise meters around the track, with one usually located outside of the timing/control tower. It sits on a post for the track barrier.

Last time I was there, they had 2 noise meters outside the tower. One measuring ambient noise levels (pointing at the ground) and one measuring car noise off the main straight. 1 was also located down the back towards the hairpin.

Having said that, there were 100-ish cars completing.

as far as i know there is no limit at QR.

but lakeside are pretty strict and do enforce the noise limits from what i have seen.

Yup

LAkeside's noise restrictions are ridiculous. When I went there, I talked to the noise meter guy (because I was black flagged in the first session for excessive noise - too much wet fart in the Vtec Honda :D ). The guy told me that there were so many cars going over in each session, it was impossible to black flag them all. Must have been at least 30% of all cars on the day got went over, and some of them were not that noisy at all.

QR is much better - they let the top fuel dragsters run there, so nothing on the track can possibly be any louder. I remember doing an autocross, sitting in my stripped out angry RX2 rally car at the start line, hearing the drag cars running over the noise of my own car. Now THAT's loud!

QR and willowbank got smart. They built their facilitys under the F1 11 flight path. They will never have an issue there.

you can get noise checked at QR if you ask them. Then you will know if you're right for Lakeside or not. But a mildly tuned R33 GTST should have no problems with noise at Lakeside if it has a sensible exhaust system.

noisey little NA cars screaming their tits off have more trouble with noise than turbo cars.

Just be sure you are well under the mark if you get tested at qr.

I have seen several cars given the okay qr only to be told gtfo at lakeside.

My car is borderline and so i wont take it to lakeside until i can get it under by a bit more.

Its all about getting your money first with those buggers.

    • Old Son, did you re-use the Holden ABS in the new shell or try a different module?
    • Yeah, nah. I had the actuator rod off it today. The arm will not move at all. Neither out, nor in. Yeah, you'd think so, but I've been thinking about that. Even when the actuator rod fell all the way off at the beginning of this saga, it would build more boost and faster in lower gears than it would in higher gears, and you'd think that that was the opposite of what should happen. But I strongly suspect that there is a thing with the gearing getting the revs to rise faster, that there must be some transient effect with the gas flow rate rising quickly, that you don't get with the more steady state case of the higher gears. Keep in mind - the gate is not shut in either of my weirdnesses. So things are not "normal". We normally think about a turbo spooling up (below the wastegate target) with the gate shut. I have all sorts of mental models running now where the gate is a little bit open, and having it stuck open allowing gas out while it should be going through the turbine has all sorts of weird effects (in these mental models). I'm thinking in the higher gears, the ex mani pressure builds to the point where enough gases spill out the wastegate to just prevent the pressure rising much more at all, or just creeping up, all the whole the revs are increasing and getting closer to the point where a gear shift becomes necessary.
    • Is it possibly wastegate actuator itself is sticking, or even the rod to flapper? Otherwise I reckon things are getting a bit rusty/worn   Also odd it won't boost in 3rd to 5th, but will in 1st, I'd expect the other way around with it slightly open as there's more time on your way to redline for it to spin up
    • Does anyone know ow what these two plugs are for and if they should be unplugged? Just put the dash back together and can't remember if these were plugged in before or unplugged! (Blue and white plugs) 🤦🏽‍♂️
    • Did some FASTing ...got the impression that the actual part# was a moot point ; seems all of these hardlines for coolant are discontinued/NLA... like, I take it you're after the hardline that bolts onto to the manifold...that's NLA according to amayama & nengun .... ...just to clear up some confusion, they typically mounted the AAC valve to the intake manifold somewhere near a coolant passage, so the body of the valve heats up & holds it open when engine's up to temp - no coolant flows through the valve, it's a mechanical, thermal connection.
