Hi all

R34GTT stock standard

Lately I've been experiencing a vibration/judder through the steering wheel when going around a corner and applying power. Doesn't matter how fast I turn in, only happens when I apply decent power while still having some steering lock on. Only noticed it turning right, though that could just be thats the main situation it happens (roundabouts etc). It can be pretty significant.

I'm not sure whether or not it's just the wheels skipping from understeer or something else (worse). The car doesn't understeer significantly.

Now, I haven't changed anything on the suspension or wheels, don't remember hitting anything hard, no noise/knocking at full lock at any speed, tyre pressures are all even, 35 psi.

Any ideas/thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated. Cheers

Suspension checks are pretty cheap.

They'll warn you about anything major and minor.

Pick their brains and rectify only what's necessary (according to budget) and tuck the rest away in a 'to do' list for later.

Update on this: I realised the traction control is kicking in a bit earlier than it should, round a right hand corner, as well as the vibration. So I checked out the right rear setup, and the shock is leaking. It has significantly less damping on that corner than the other side.

So the question is, would a lack of damping on one wheel cause a vibration when that wheel is unloaded? I'm thinking yes.

had a very similar problem in my R33, would give vibrations/ judder when turning left. turned out rear left shock was dying/ dead.

(as the shock is dead, you just have spring so with the less weight on the spring it becomes more 'bouncy'. scared the crap out of be just before i fixed it because it was my rear shock, went over some lumpy bit on the road and the diff kicked in and jumped the rear sideways a bit :S )

replaced shocks and it's been all good :(

One way to test it is to swap shocks L<->R, see if the situation changes.

There's still the same weight on the spring. The reason the car becomes bouncy is that the shock absorber is unable to do its job, namely to control the motion of the spring.

I think he meant less weight as the car goes around a corner.

Cheers for the replies. So is it possible to get the stock shockies rebuilt? Can't really afford a full set of coilovers at the moment, though if all else fails I might have to.

yeah, i meant as the car body moves as going round the corner that the spring will 'see' less weight. sorry if i didn't make that clear the first time.

i imagine rebuilds could be costly as well. when mine died i was able to find someone here on the forums selling a set of stock replacement springs and shocks for only $180. they aren't much of an improvement at all, but it's kept me on the road until i have more $$$.

    • Possibly avoid using a Cometic one unless the deck/head surface are perfectly flat. I did have a look just then and forgiving gaskets such as Tomei or Nitto don't exist for the FJ20, however the Bar-Tek or Kameari ones look good and might do the trick.
    • Because pipe threads for pipe things. M threads for bolt things. Throw some teflon sealant onto it and dust your hands off knowing you did the right thing, instead of going twice around the block to achieve a result using the wrong things. Of course, all of these solutions are ignoring the fact that the minimum thread pitch we're talking about here is 1.25mm, with the 1/4" in NPT or BPS being out around 1.4mm. You will need to know that the boss you're tapping has enough thickness for at least a few threads. That's one of the reasons that 1/8" is commonly used - because the pitch is <1mm. And why would you look to use 1/4" NPT in a BSP country anyway? Ugh.
    • Just throwing around ideas, does it need to be in the compressor cover? Why not the hot side piping?
    • 1/8NPT drill size = 8.7mm. Since the hole got messed up by me, it’s probably around 9mm.    So 1/4” NPT would be next step. A drill size of around 11mm would be preferred there which is not way of my M12 (drill 10.5mm and tap M12 threads)
