ok os i see this forum filled with f**kwit p-platers saying things like i wana n/a a gt-r. it gives me a little laugh. but us youngsters have got to start somewhere right?

anyway i am a p-plater. (so im hoping i dont add ot he amount of shit on this forum) i got given to me a 4door r33 gts-t. long story short its got a f**ked motor and seeing how i have to qabide by gay laws i have decided to commence a rb25de transplant.

ive got a few questions. i already have the de. got that for cheap too. it has wiring loom and ecu.

im wondering is it possible to leave the det loom in place. plug all the sensors and ignition into the de and then plug the de ecu in. (minus boost and vaccum sensors of course). ive searched and searched i cant find any de pinouts. i can however can find a det pinouts. surely theyed be the same just not having pins going to the boost/ turbo part of the wiring loom.

i am under the impression itd be easier to plug and play than remove and replce the whole loom is this correct?

get back to me guys. cheers

Before any of this mate, the problem is the car is still registered as a turbo 4 door 33, you can never change that... even if you physically do not have a turbo attached to your motor and show a cop, they can say "well, it says here this is a turbo mate" so theres not really much point...

as above, the fact that you are putting in a different aspiration motor to what the car came out with standard counts as an engine modification, which you aren't allowed to do as a P-plater. so sorry mate, you can't legally drive your car even with a NA motor in it.

Off topic

As per Vic Roads website, you arnt alout to drive cars that:

"has an engine that has been modified to increase the vehicle's performance"

Vic Roads Link

Swaping to a lower power engine isnt increasing vehicle's performance.

But beware, Im NOT saying its legal to do what he is saying, and i have no idea about the legal side to this stuff.. Just quoting what i read...

Just putting it out there... :/

If you replace the motor with an N/A, the turbo loom will work fine, you just need to run an N/A ecu, everything else is the same (providing its the same series motor). I'm assuming your replacement DE will come with all of its bits, if it is a bare motor the only thing you will need is N/A 270cc injectors. Idle gear/afm/cas/coilpacks/o2/tps will all work fine, its just the same as putting an RB25DET ecu and injectors onto an N/A, but better as all of the extra bits that the N/A loom is missing (for turbo) you wont have to worry about (i.e. the N/A doesn’t have anything extra, the turbo does).

To summarise, change the ECU, use the right injectors and it’ll work fine.

Ok so i am very much in luck. It turns out the car was originally a de. Meaning that its complinance/rego plates show it has a de not a det. So the guy who owned it put the det into it. So im going to have this check but in theory i should be legally able to drive the car. So does any one have hints when putting this motor in?

Sorry about the bad spelling before i was writing it off a iphone and its hard as to do. Thanks for all the replies though!

if that is the case then you should just be able to bolt the motor in and it will be 100% legal. i've heard of a few people lately who have been in the same lucky situation as yourself where they have found that their turbo car was actually a natro originally which has made them able to swap back to natro.

  • 3 weeks later...

its my old car, i was a p plater at the time, it sais its a de on the plate so this means he can drive it, putting a de engine into it is the best choice you will be able to drive it with not a worry at all, believe me i looked into this heaps when i owned it, now hurry up & get that bloody engine because im itching to help you get it running :P

    • Hi, SteveL Thank you very much for your reply, you seem to be the only person on the net who has come up with a definitive answer for which I am grateful. The "Leak" was more by way of wet bubbles when the pedal was depressed hard by a buddy while trying to gey a decent pedal when bleeding the system having fitted the rebuilt BM50 back in the car, which now makes perfect sense. A bit of a shame having just rebuilt my BM50, I did not touch the proportioning valve side of things, the BM50 was leaking from the primary piston seal and fluid was running down the the Brake booster hence the need to rebuild, I had never noticed any fluid leaking from that hole previously it only started when I refitted it to the car. The brake lines in the photo are "Kunifer" which is a Copper/Nickel alloy brake pipe, but are only the ones I use to bench bleed Master cylinders, they are perfectly legal to use on vehicles here in the UK, however the lines on the car are PVF coated steel. Thanks again for clearing this up for me, a purchase of a new BMC appears to be on the cards, I have been looking at various options in case my BM50 was not repairable and have looked at the HFM BM57 which I understand is manufactured in Australia.
    • Well the install is officially done. Filled with fluid and bled it today, but didn't get a chance to take it on a test drive. I'll throw some final pics of the lines and whatnot but you can definitely install a DMAX rack in an R33 with pretty minor mods. I think the only other thing I had to do that isn't documented here is grind a bit of the larger banjo fitting to get it to clear since the banjos are grouped much tighter on the DMAX rack. Also the dust boots from a R33 do not fit either fyi, so if you end up doing this install for whatever reason you'll need to grab those too. One caveat with buying the S15 dust boots however is that the clamps are too small to fit on the R33 inner tie rod since they're much thicker so keep the old clamps around. The boots also twist a bit when adjusting toe but it's not a big deal. No issues or leaks so far, steering feels good and it looks like there's a bit more lock now than I had before. Getting an alignment on Saturday so I'll see how it feels then but seems like it'll be good to go
    • I don't get in here much anymore but I can help you with this.   The hole is a vent (air relief) for the brake proportioning valve, which is built into the master cylinder.    The bad news is that if brake fluid is leaking from that hole then it's getting past the proportioning valve seals.   The really bad news is that no spare parts are available for the proportioning valve either from Nissan or after market.     It's a bit of a PITA getting the proportioning valve out of the master cylinder body anyway but, fortunately, leaks from that area are rare in my experience. BTW, if those are copper (as such) brake lines you should get rid of them.    Bundy (steel) tube is a far better choice (and legal  in Australia - if that's where you are).
