Little more complicated than that. I'd recommend genuine Garret turbos, but that depends on your budget.

All comes down to how much power he wants to make, on an RB20 a KKR430 would be good for about 400hp flat out, if he want's less than that, i'd suggest something like a GT3071.

Give us some info on the motor? I'm guessing RB20? Any other mods?

He has a Cefiro with an RB20DET. It was a boost controller and airpod. He wants a turbo that achieves full boost at around 5k rpm. Woud the KKR430 do this as the budget would not stretch far enough for a GT3071? Is the quality of a KKR430 ok considering its a chinese knock off.

Thanks

Yeah they are a Chinese knock off, but they aren't too bad. Try a Hypergear turbo. Garret bearings, Australian Service. There's a 60-something page thread of Hypergear testing and refining their turbos.

I don't know why your fella specifically wants a turbo that has mega lag and takes till 5k rpm to spool... Lag is a negative side product of a big turbo that makes HEAPS of power, and without the 'HEAPS' of power, it's shit to drive a car that takes untill 5k to make power.

A Hypergear TR43 is about the same as a kkr430, but better quality :)

Full boost probably around 3500-4000 rpm depending on boost.
