Ok. This is Kinda anoying now. as some one who has actually done this I will tell you a story :D

I bought my 89' R32 GTR back in August, and I got an exception to bring it in under the old 15yr rule(year not month), So I picked it up from the warf about 2-3 weeks ago.. there were HEAPS of cars on the dock also comming in under the 15Yr rule... from what I saw most of these were in exceptional condition. Including mine. I am absolutlely stoked with my car and its condtion, it runs awsomely and it truly is a great example of a GTR.

and wait for it.....

it cost me $14700 one of the cheepest I have seen. It was bought through Prestigue based on his review of the car and the action inspectors report (which was as true as it could have been).

I did have my douts in the process and my worrys, but it really was worth it (it is a risk). All I can see is that those that had thier cars prior, will be loosing value because of this rule, and hence they dont like it and will rebel against the rule. I think it will suck should they change the rule, as I would deffinatly do this again..

Save your self the money... these cars arnt worth anything in Japan.. so they off load to us, why not take advantage of this while you still can.

Stirlo_GTR - Congratulations! I thought that this would be the case. But i am aware that there are lemons out there and there can be a small window of luck invovled.

Thanks to everyone who posted their opinion. I know you pay for what you get but just shows there are bargains to be had from japan!

dude, out of all the r32 GTR's being brought and sold your's is still number 1, it looks so good...you gotta keep us in the loop when you pick it up!

I do however, agree with the notion that you do actually get what you pay for. But if someone wants a stock or near-stock R32 GTR, why waste time with a 1989 model? In my opinion, the best thing about the 15 year rule is that you can import a car with any amount of modifications that are no longer allowed under SEVS/RAWS. An example is a stock-looking grey R32 GTR that had a HKS 6 speed, brakes and a twin 3037S kit with a worked engine, claimed 850PS and mid 9 sec 1/4. These are the cars that I'd want to import, not stock-ish R32's that may need some work.

well i ain't one.. but i'm still dubious as to how many in 6-12 months time are going to be forsale, because the owners could only afford $18k, rather than $30k for a local one.

nxtime has a point too .. stock 89 is a waste of time.. as the difference between that and a stock 92 under SEVS is about $5k max. And that would easily be held through when you went to sell it over an 89.

I can understand the animosity of 92-94 model R32 GTR owners - Personally i don't think the value of these cars will be affected too much (not the worked one's anyway). Predator makes a highly valuable point about how many of these 89 imports will be up for sale in 6-12 months because of ppl who bought em in cheap and begin the fixing up process - only to find it's way more than they bargained for. The flood will start this year because many won't be imported till later like Sept - Dec 2004. I think in the latest HPI, Ben Ellis talks about how buying a GTR is one thing but affording it is something totally different - The running costs of these cars is expensive. A mate of mine reckons that purchasing these 89 GTR's may be something of a lucky dip - some may just get lucky and pick up a real bargain. Don't get me wrong, I do believe there are good examples of 89 models out there - but i don't reckon its as many as some reckon there are.

On the note of it being a waste buying a near stock example - When i was looking to purchase one earlier this year I talked to many mechanics in Sydney - namely from the more experienced workshops (Advan, Croydon, etc) who said you're better of buying a near stock example of a 32 R anyway - coz at least you're not inhereting any probs with a worked car. But I for one can see the benefits of a well tuned R with plenty of expensive gear that would cost twice as much if you put it on yourself. Horses for courses - depends how far you'd want to take the car in the 1st place. I really do hope there are lots of good examples out there, as myself like many others are skeptical so i'm keen to see what ppl get. I reckon it'd be good to get a thread going with opinions of buyers of the 89 models (not just GTR) once these cars start arriving in due course.

Its also interesting that most people on here are probably in the position here where they *could* sell their skylines, and have a bit of a punt on an 1989 vehicle. Not everybody is doing that, so obviously there is a bit of caution out there.

Modified as to unmodified reliability is an interesting one. While on one hand you'd assume a non-modified example would be less "thrashed", less likely to have been doing hard track, drift, or whatever other work in Japan, its not a guarantee.

On the other, much of the time owners of a modified vehicle tend to take more care of the car as its what they put a lot of money into it, getting it tuned, fixing problems, using proper grade oils, etc.

In the end, I think its probably not going to be very long at all before the stopper is put on the 1989 cars by the government. And once that happens, once the remaining ones arrive in Australia -- it will just be a question of condition. Already locally you can pay maybe $28k - $40k for a R32GTR depending on year, modifications, etc. In the end it will be the same for the 1989 cars as potentially 2nd local buyers will be able to get them evaluated, mechanically tested, etc before purchase, however they're more likely to come at the lower end of the scale simply because of year. You definitely can't go on km.

I'd happly put my "sh*tbox" 89 up against any of the later GTR's to see how crap it is to yours. Fact is, aside from some wear on the steering wheel and the seat, you would not pick a difference. yes, it is in good mechanical condition with even compression across the cylinders. why can't we just admit there are good and bad of all ages....

It was a good operatunity if you were carefull/not stupid.. to pass it up was your choice, dont hate cause someone took up on it, thats all, there is nothing wrong with mine and i promis I could sell it tomorrow and make $5-10k.. we got a good deal cause we took a risk, that s how life works. :P

All i have to say is.. most of the 89 GTR's are burnt out motor wize.. the driveline on GTR's are strong since i have experienced driving a 89 GTR back in japan 2 Years ago which was excellent...

your best bet is finding a R32 GTR 89 with a R33/34 engine..

here is one damn NICE R32 1989... this is not just engine work.. the body is also as NEW!... i 100% recomend someone buying this car and it could easly do low 11's with some boost.

From my point of view on the subject, a well modded 89 would be a bargain at that price of about 15K even if the engine is tired. I don't see how the cost of a GTR engine build is going to be greater than a 25t for example and they appear to be stronger overall initially.

Where the cost will be is in paying some overpriced tuner to rebuild the donk, but the internal parts are about the same for bearings, seals and forged pistons as a 25t. Personally I prefer V8 engine shops as they are not about a cool sticker but getting value to their dinosaur owning customers...and there is no doubt they know their stuff. An engine is an engine is an engine....and performance requires certain things to be just so.

I can only say that I will be flogging off the soarer and looking hard at an 89 GTR32, but I do my own work so tired engines and other gear is no biggie for me.

Get as many of these in the country as possible while we can....a car is NOT an investment so screw the values.

    • Did this end up working? Did you take some pictures?
    • And finally, the front lower mount. It was doubly weird. Firstly, the lower mount is held in with a bracket that has 3 bolts (it also acts as the steering lock stop), and then a nut on the shock lower mount itself. So, remove the 3x 14mm head bolts , then the 17mm nut that holds the shock in. From there, you can't actually remove the shock from the lower mount bolt (took me a while to work that out....) Sadly I don't have a pic of the other side, but the swaybar mounts to the same bolt that holds the shock in. You need to push that swaybar mount/bolt back so the shock can be pulled out past the lower control arm.  In this pic you can see the bolt partly pushed back, but it had to go further than that to release the shock. Once the shock is out, putting the new one in is "reverse of disassembly". Put the top of the shock through at least one hole and put a nut on loosely to hold it in place. Put the lower end in place and push the swaybar mount / shock bolt back in place, then loosely attach the other 2 top nuts. Bolt the bracket back in place with the 14mm head bolts and finally put the nut onto the lower bolt. Done....you have new suspension on your v37!
    • And now to the front.  No pics of the 3 nuts holding the front struts on, they are easy to spot. Undo 2 and leave the closest one on loosely. Underneath we have to deal with the wiring again, but this time its worse because the plug is behind the guard liner. You'll have to decide how much of the guard liner to remove, I undid the lower liner's top, inside and lower clips, but didn't pull it full off the guard. Same issue undoing the plug as at the rear, you need to firmly push the release clip from below while equally firmly gripping the plug body and pulling it out of  the socket. I used my fancy electrical disconnect pliers to get in there There is also one clip for the wiring, unlike at the rear I could not get behind it so just had to lever it up and out.....not in great condition to re-use in future.
    • Onto the rear lower shock mount. It's worth starting with a decent degrease to remove 10+ years of road grime, and perhaps also spray a penetrating oil on the shock lower nut. Don't forget to include the shock wiring and plug in the clean.... Deal with the wiring first; you need to release 2 clips where the wiring goes into the bracket (use long nose pliers behind the bracket to compress the clip so you can reuse it), and the rubber mount slides out, then release the plug.  I found it very hard to unplug, from underneath you can compress the tab with a screwdriver or similar, and gently but firmly pull the plug out of the socket (regular pliers may help but don't put too much pressure on the plastic. The lower mount is straightforward, 17mm nut and you can pull the shock out. As I wasn't putting a standard shock back in, I gave the car side wiring socket a generous gob of dialectric grease to keep crap out in the future. Putting the new shock in is straightforward, feed it into at least 1 of the bolt holes at the top and reach around to put a nut on it to hold it up. Then put on the other 2 top nuts loosely and put the shock onto the lower mounting bolt (you may need to lift the hub a little if the new shock is shorter). Tighten the lower nut and 3 upper nuts and you are done. In my case the BC Racing shocks came assembled for the fronts, but the rears needed to re-use the factory strut tops. For that you need spring compressors to take the pressure off the top nut (they are compressed enough when the spring can move between the top and bottom spring seats. Then a 17mm ring spanner to undo the nut while using an 8mm open spanner to stop the shaft turning (or, if you are really lucky you might get it off with a rattle gun).
    • You will now be able to lift the parcel shelf trim enough to get to the shock cover bolts; if you need to full remove the parcel shelf trim for some reason you also remove the escutcheons around the rear seat release and you will have to unplug the high stop light wiring from the boot. Next up is removal of the bracket; 6 nuts and a bolt Good news, you've finally got to the strut top! Remove the dust cover and the 3 shock mount nuts (perhaps leave 1 on lightly for now....) Same on the other side, but easier now you've done it all before
