Hi,

I purchased a reasonably highly modified R33 GTR from Qld (I live in NSW). I received it yesterday after it was shipped down by TNT and then had to go through all the bs to get it registered. My local mechanic did the blue slip no probs, but when I went to the RTA to get it registered they told me that my car had been "flagged" as a high risk for rebirthing etc and I have to now get an RTA inspection on Thursday before they will register it. The lady told me that they would be focusing on engine numbers etc to ensure that the vehicle hasn't been rebirthed but my concern is the modifications. I have asked my mechanic to remove the oil catch can, guages on the a-pillar, hide the turbo timer and ebc etc. but it is very difficult to make the car look standard when you don't have any of the original parts such as the pod filters and big HKS exhaust.

Has anyone had one of these inspections before? Do they check through everything? I'm sure I will only be asking for trouble if I don't replace the exhaust and pod filters (and most of the other obvious stuff) but I don't see what choice I have. This is really stressing me because I have gone through a lot of hassles already to get the car and now the last thing I want would be to not be able to register it.

Thanks for any help.

hey gtrrex... after i bought my car in sydney and brought it back to newcastle, went to transfer rego and the rta told me to go to the local pits for a identity check, which from what i saw they appeared to check engine no. chasis no. and they also checked the petrol filler for ULP only filler spout i suppose. At the time my exhaust was about 110dbs and i had a turbo timer, nothing was said, i did borrow a std air box for the inspection.

hope this helps and good luck !

hehehe..just to add to it all! i went through the same thing...had my car brought here from melb and when trying to get it registered, i had to take it to the rta for a check...it was quite stressing cause they take your car into a warehouse area and close the door...so you can't see whats happenin...then they do all their checks and give you back your car...

like everyone has said, don't stress too much...they're just checking to see that the car isn't stolen or using stolen parts :D

Thanks for your responses!! I feel much better knowing that this is a common occurrance. The vibe I got from my mechanic when I told him I had to get an inspection was that I would more than likely have trouble with it.

Hopefully 11:30am on Thursday I will be the proud owner of a REGISTERED GTR!

Thanks again.

your oe of the unlucky ones, its only 50 percent of people that get asked to do an identity check, it has nothing to to with the car being flagged or anything like that, its just random, i was lucky to register my car without an identity check, but anyways like someone wrote on this thread if you knwo everyhthing is legal on the car you have nothing to worry about,

cheers mate and good luck on the test,

    • Update 2: Today I'm f**king pissed. Some of you probably saw my thread that I opened shortly after joining this forum, "urgently need expert/experienced opinion", in which I discussed the possibility of a porous RB26 engine block which I also found hard to believe. Currently both turbos are out since the shitty braided line that was installed by whoever fitted the GT28 turbos leaked oil onto the exhaust. Today while working on the cam covers to put new gaskets and half moons in, I cleaned the side of the engine block with brake cleaner. Some time later I saw that it was still glistening with oil or coolant so I dried that off. But it was wet again shortly after. Verdict: I'm royally screwed. What you can see here (hopefully, despite shit resolution), circled in red, is a crack above the turbo oil feed. Extent is a few cm long and basically goes from #3 cylinder wall to #4 cylinder wall. It slowly lets coolant through, even without any pressure behind it. I am absolutely dumbfounded as to how this crack even formed, especially since it isn't along the cylinder as it usually is but rather a horizontal crack. Probably a few cm in length. Not sure on how to deal with this issue right now. Most likely, the only true fix is a new engine block, and even a relatively well done temporary fix requires at least a full engine teardown. Neither of those really fit my timetable right now, the car has been in my buddy's garage long enough as it is. I'm open to suggestions, but I'll be looking into ordering a new 05U block soon so I have one ready for the coming year, or whenever the current block inevitably fails fully. (Most likely once the crack reaches one of the frost plugs) I think it'd be a waste of money and time to rebuild the engine with this block. Oh and I found a rust hole on the side pocket of the trunk, which someone covered up with sealant goop, a piece of number plate and bodywork filler. Fun times. So far for every issue we fix we just find a new one that is arguably worse.
    • I have not found this no. I put one back on a couple days ago with no drama. I agree they are tight, but no need to remove anything.
    • That is gates blue racing belt
    • Anyone found gates blue racing to be extremely tight/ almost impossible to install without moving the exhaust gear
