Please Help! Intercooler Selection For My Project Car And Induction Airbox.

Recommended Posts

Hi all sorry if I have posted this in the wrong area

I'm in the process of building a street/track. I have R32 GTS with an rb25det neo conversion. My aim is 300rwkw, I would just like some helpful information with a selection of mods which will help me get goal.

So far the list of mods I have aside ready to put in are

Apexi PFC

Splitfire coilpacks

Z32 afm

Greddy bootst controller prof 2

NKG .08 gap copper plugs

My next step is my exhaust system, do I go custom 3" stainless steel? Or after market eg apexi, hks, arc system? Which will have better flow? It does not matter to me about cost just what will work best!

Next step induction, okay do I keep my standard r32 airbox and change the filter? - upgrade to a r32 gtst ARC induction box? Or apexi pod filter with heat shield? What will be the best option for better flow and cooler air?

Next step front mount intercooler - there are so many fmic around these days it's hard to know what is the best option. I would just like to know if the stock GTR intercooler would be a good choice r32,r33 or r34 GTR? Is there a difference and what would be the best choice? Good flow? Will they support 300rwkw and will they all fit my car?

Not to sure about injectors and fuel pump. Brands & sizes? I was thinking sard 800cc and 040 or 044?

Last part will be the turbo I don't really want to go for a high mount turbo I'd rather stay with a low mount but then again I don't know a lot about turbos so is that possible. A low mount turbo making +300rwkw if so can you please let me know and what will be the best option

Thanks Johnny

exhaust, go a custom job or a premade one, as long as it's 3" madrell it should be aight

go a pod filter in a sealed box with a CAI

fmic, most cores will hold 300rwkw. i run a hybrid gt with 325rwkw. anything jap should work, as will a GTR item

injectors, go minimum 740cc, and fuel pump, go 044 or nismo intank

turbo, go a 3071 or 3076.... you'll have to search hard to see what you prefer.

unless you find an HKS 2835, then just use that

Hey hamish

Thanks heaps mate a lot of useful information here much appreciated champ,

Just one question I heard that the ARC induction box works a lot better than a pod is this true?

Cheers Johnny

For your exhasut, as mentiond above a decent brand 3" will suit you fine.

You can run the arc box or pods, if you run pods have a look at the following item im getting one as i may not have room for a arc box, plus from the look its 90% sealed of from the eng bay. http://jsai.com.au/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage-ask.tpl&product_id=264&category_id=18&keyword=r32&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=29

How do you wont your piping layed out. Thier is a thread in the turbo section on diffrent IC pipe lay outs. personly im getting a blits se FMIC from just jap as it uses the factory piping route and doest clog the eng bay IMO. http://www.justjap.com/store/product.php?productid=19401&cat=&page=1

Thier is also a forumula to work out what injector size you need v power (have a power goal in mind to work this is out) as for fuel pump bosh 040 are good and are widly used, plus are in pump.

From whats ive heard look at the garret GT-RS ( i think thats the one), also thier is a rb20 turbo up grade thrad in the turbo section with result from diffrent turbo and mod combernations.

and with your brakes, go for R33 GTST items over the 32 GTR items they are bigger (i think thicker as well). look at Racebrakes RB74 pads, DBA 4000 slotted or if you wont 5000 series sloted rotors (5000 are two pce), dot 5.1 brake fluid (motul) and braided brake lines, and brake master cyl brace (if you plan on tracking it)

  • 1 month later...

There are on line calculators ( google) but 550 should make 300kw but if you have topfeed rail ID 1000s are very popular now and said to flow well at half capacity.

And according to the formula provided by our local Turbo builder you need an intercooler that will flow 700cfm for 300kw - although getting flow rates from intercooler manufacturers sems to be like pulling teeth!

    • Yeah, it's getting like that, my daughter is coming over on Thursday to help me remove the bonnet so I can install the Carbuilders underbonnet stuff,  I might get her to give me a hand and remove the hardtop, maybe, because on really hot days the detachable hardtop helps the aircon keep the interior cool, the heat just punches straight through to rag top I also don't have enough hair for the "wind in the hair" experience, so there is that....LOL
    • Could be falling edge/rising edge is set wrong. Are you getting sync errors?
    • On BMWs what I do because I'm more confident that I can't instantly crush the pinch welds and do thousands of USD in chassis damage is use a set of rubber jacking pads designed to protect the chassis/plastic adapter and raise a corner of the car, place the aforementioned 2x12 inch wooden planks under a tire, drop the car, then this normally gives me enough clearance to get to the front central jack point. If you don't need it to be a ramp it only needs to be 1-1.5 feet long. On my R33 I do not trust the pinch welds to tolerate any of this so I drive up on the ramps. Before then when I had to get a new floor jack that no longer cleared the front lip I removed it to get enough clearance to put the jack under it. Once you're on the ramps once you simply never let the car down to the ground. It lives on the ramps or on jack stands.
    • Nah. You need 2x taps for anything that you cannot pass the tap all the way through. And even then, there's a point in response to the above which I will come back to. The 2x taps are 1x tapered for starting, and 1x plug tap for working to the bottom of blind holes. That block's port is effectively a blind hole from the perspective of the tap. The tapered tap/tapered thread response. You don't ever leave a female hole tapered. They are supposed to be parallel, hence the wide section of a tapered tap being parallel, the existince of plug taps, etc. The male is tapered so that it will eventually get too fat for the female thread, and yes, there is some risk if the tapped length of the female hole doesn't offer enough threads, that it will not lock up very nicely. But you can always buzz off the extra length on the male thread, and the tape is very good at adding bulk to the joint.
    • Nice....looking forward to that update
