u mean the second generation/ W20?- the turbo one yeah? If so id say yes. they are meant ot be awesome and with that kind of fruit on em it would be epic. Meant to bite back pretty hard if you go past the limit tho :s. Similar to a porsche turbo- particularly the 80's models.

If an MR2 could have seated 1 more person or my 42kg greyhound id be one the MR2 forums right now in stead of SAU... Drove a 200+kwatw MR2 turbo with coilovers etc etc and nearly took the dive anyway. As it tturns out my current GTST came up the next weekend and the rest is history for me ;)

Can you do an engine swap though? Maybe an LS1, I know the engine bay is not exactly large. I know you can do V6 conversions but that's not worth it. How possible is it to drop like an Audi RS4 engine in, the 4.2 ltr V8. They're expensive but I want it to be a special project. I know I should be asking on the MR2 forum but it's not a nice forum (whatever that means lol). I wonder if you guys know. By the way yes the Mk2 is the W20.

...so you make a thread about how good the handling might be on an Mr2... then 7 posts down say the thread say that your project isn't about performance but about engine sound and how you want a V8

you make me racist, man.

no they are mid engine- rear wheel drive (like ferraris/ 2wd lambos).

Nonetheless this is generally agreed upon as the superior handling/drive layout. Hence why formula 1 cars use it...

Yes I know MR2's are Mid Mounted, RWD.

I was not asking what they were.

I was saying RWD vs AWD as the OP questioned MR2 vs EVO.

"This layout is typically chosen for its low moment of inertia and relatively favorable weight distribution (the heaviest component is near the center of the car, making the main component of its moment of inertia relatively low).

The layout has a tendency toward being heavier in the rear than the front, which allows for best balance to be achieved under braking.

However, since there is little weight over the front wheels, under acceleration, the front of the car is prone to lift and cause understeer."

^^ A general summery of Mid Mounted, RWD, but in reguards to Lamborghini / Ferrari / F1 Cars, refiment would have been a must to counter that.

:)

Yeah sure you can mod a MR2 with all that...

Mod the EVO with all that... Then what happens...

You wanted "outright grip", then I'd go EVO.

:)

I know and agree 110% but this particular project is less about performance and more about engine sound. It's complicated but I do need the sound of a V8.

LOL!

This guy!

Trollin!

I've owned 3 mid mounts in the past.

These cars are the best for 'seat of the pants' feeling. You can feel what the car is doing - and you feel like part of the car.

Properly setup, they can out-handle most vehicles. Damn, I kept up with a porsche in the wet on twisty roads in my old Fiat X/19 which had a 1.3 litre engine. It's just the straight line speed needs to be 'encouraged'.

Even a standard elise does well at a track day...

V8 in an MR2.... please.... pffft

    • Have a vb in honour of the car comming back
    • It was a great, but typical track day, and some VB was ingested at the night time debrief 🤪
    • And so, to round this out, I couldn't be happier to confirm @MBS206 has decided to buy the car. He drove down from sunny QLD with a trailer last week and it is off to its new home today. I'll let Matt confirm on next steps but I understand broadly that the plan is to leave it pretty much as is, and just get some quality wheel time with a nicely balanced car that is pretty much track ready. There are a few a jobs still to be done first but nothing too major and I think its a very smart buy Dinner last night at the Paragon with a round of VBs (mostly) for Neil
    • Well, 50 pages and the end of a chapter for this car. We took it out for a shakedown at Wakie yesterday, and everything went well. There were a couple of niggles: - Oil cooler fitting leak - tightened, cleaned, stopped leaking - Radiator cap overflow fitting was leaking....Mark called it, the overflow fitting was threaded in and not tight....tightened, tested and held pressure - Small oil leak at the rear of the block, probably the turbo oil feed - too hot to get at it comfortably but probably just needs to be nipped up - leak at the driver's side rear brake line where it meets the hardline. Fitting wasn't loose, so Matt backed it off and back on, no further leaks - there's also a leak somewhere on the top of the fuel tank, maybe that cross over fuel line - that was has been left to fix when its on a hoist Otherwise than those niggles the car went great, turned great and stopped great so it was a very successful day out. I'm always really nervous when a car first hits the track after a long break, especially with a brand new engine as well but it was great. VID-20251011-WA0007.mp4  Big thanks to @The Bogan who dropped by and helped out, @MBS206 and my nephew Lachlan the apprentice.  Neil's wife Mel also surprised the hell out of all of us by dropping by; she's up in Tamworth these days but was travelling to Melbourne so had plausible deniability for turning up at the garage, it was great to see her but also obviously a bit sad all round.
