here we go again..

been trying to hunt down whats stopping my battery from charging properly, battery is new and alternator replaced with a known working one

upon initial start i get 14v as per normal however if i drive around i can see my voltage dropping gradually with time

have checked for drain which was 0.04amps which is normal

alternator belt tension is fine

will a missing fusible link contribute to my issue??

is the an "exciter wire" that triggers the alternator to start charging the battery?

might have to end up striipng the loom back..

p.s fixed an earth point in the boot but no difference, will clean up the engine earth point tmrw

what else?

It is normal to start charging high and drop volts to about 13.4 by the time it is warm. what are you seeing?

if monitoring with pfc h/c on startup i get 14v or so (13v at apexi turbo timer), during the drive i get 12.4-12.6v at apexi turbo timer as it starts flashing

with car running my voltage should be between 13.8 - 14.8v.. i dont ever see 12.8v with car running

I guess I am missing the point as usual :P

The PFC HC shows about 1v higher than the turbo timer? Have you put a multimeter across the battery terminals to confirm which one is right? If it is just the turbo timer reading lower it is probably just a wiring problem (power or earth) to the turbo timer

yeah multimter tests with car started shows 14v initially but once i start losing voltage, another check with the multimeters shows voltage below 13v, when i should be seeing close to 14v

will fusible link have any effect, my other option is to check all the wiring from starter / alt to battery

nope, not the fuseable link, it is just a big fuse.

the light on the dash provides a little resistance and makes the alternator charge. this causes an issue if the globe is out, but I guess it isn't otherwise you would have mentioned.

how low does the multimeter show the voltage goes?

0.02 is acceptable current draw not 0.04, but depending on the battery size and how often you drive the car this will vary.

sounds like the alternators on its way out, make sure the alternator is getting a good ground and also the positive cable is is good condition

most common cause of current draw in a factory system is the alternator, to rule this out unplug the connector going into the alternator and also the battery positive on the back of the alternator. but with such a small drain i doubt its the alternator id be more so looking into whats aftermarket.

stereo? turbo timer? boost controller? alarm? crap like that

forgot bout this lil thread, problem is still there

can i ask, is the globe u mention part of the main cluster? ill be taking the dash apart tmrw to check the bulbs

Have u checked the main fuses in the engine bay ?

I had a similar issue and it was that one of the main ( engine) fuses had a crack in it and was draining the battery

I put a new battery and alternator in and all it was tha bloody fuse hahaha

thanks mate, will check that out asap, have a few spare ones that ill swap over

does the battery light come on with ignition before you start the car?

checked and replaced fuses, did a continuity test on the rest of the fuses in the cabin and engine bay but no improvement

took the car for 15min drive, upon startup im getting around 12.8-13.0v on the apexi turbo timer and after driving for 10mins or so with no other electrics on, its coming down to 12.6v

also checked the exciter wire for continuity from the alternator to the engine bay fuses box, no breaks

    • Ha, well, it's been.... a bit of a journey. Things have taken much longer than I'd hoped. I'll probably put up a thread at some stage. Hopefully soon. The car's not done any kms since my update in June though, put it that way.
    • Here's the chart for fuel pressure vs. current draw, assuming your base fuel pressure is 3 bar and you run like 0.5bar boost on WOT, you should only momentarily hit 9amps here and there. (Ignore my prev post, I cannot read a chart these days it seems)
    • Those comp test results are not hideous. Whether they are accurate or not (ie, when that comp tester says 140 psi, is the real pressure120, 140 or 160?) is unknown to us. The state of the battery used to crank it over is unknown, etc etc. Many people around here would say that the absolute values and the spread are perfectly fine to just add boost and keep going. I personally would be happier with a narrower spread than that, but even the diff between 125 and 145 is not terrible. That one cylinder at 125 though, has probably copped some damage relative to the others. You should inspect the valves seeing as you've got it open. Do you know how to measure installed ring gaps? That, and an inspection of the rings themselves, is how you will determine whether they need to be replaced. If you're not good to do these things, take the block and the pistons and rings to a shop that is, and ask them for the go/no-go on them. Do the bores need a hone at all? If so, you might well be justified in getting some different pistons in order to get away from the ring supply problem. Whether you're happy to spend a lot more money right now, on more gear, rather than less money, but an amount that looks stupid given that you will only get a handful of rings in exchange for that money, is for you to decide.
    • also possibly backed up to my filler and shat down it! 🤣
    • Ok so i would love some advice here please, i purchased an R33 a few months back and its had a few mods done to the engine, its an RB25det running a Master ECU, 1200cc injectors, bigger turbo, oil cooler, oil filter relocation kit, Spool H-beam rods, acl/ross pistons. When i removed the motor from the vehicle (as its getting a respray) i thought i would compression test it and these are the following results. Cylinder 1-145psi, Cylinder 2-143psi, Cylinder 3-125psi, Cylinder 4-145psi, Cylinder 5-140psi, Cylinder 6-135psi this test was done with the motor on the ground and powering up the starter motor. I dropped the sump and found broken oil squirters on cylinder 3,5 and 6. I was told my rings are probably worn so i stripped the motor completely to get a new set of rings for it. The trouble is no one has these rings anywhere and they have to be custom made by Ross over in the states and will cost about $600+$200 delivery. My question is how can i tell if my rings are at fault and if they are still ok and is this price ok for a set of rings?
