Hey guys,

I just got defected and it won't pass the inspection unless I have got rid of the gearbox leak.

There was a shit load of oil under the car and I've already replaced the rear seal behind the tailshaft and the shifter seal too. I have cable tied both ends of the shifter seal to seal it even better.

I cleaned up all of the oil and it still appears to be coming from the shifter area. I took it for a 15min drive after cleaning everything and let it cool down, then checked it after a few hours and there was about 4-5 big drops of oil ready to fall from the chassis.

What do you guys suggest I do? Should I just fork out and take it to a gearbox specialist or does anyone have any other suggestions? It's really frustrating me.

I have read it may tend to leak if it's a bit full but I haven't replaced it for months and it's been leaking a while, I doubt it would be still overfull if it was previously.

Thanks

This thread I came across seems to be a similar problem to what I have.

http://www.gmh-torana.com.au/forums/topic/36631-oil-leak-in-tail-shaft/

I had the tailshaft custom made (1 piece) by someone just like this guy.

It may be the Welch plug that needs replacing?

The thing is, I had it looked at by a gearbox place and they said it will be the welch plug, so I took it back to the place where I got the 1pc tailshaft made up and they said it'd be the rear seal, however I replaced that and it still leaks.

It makes sense now because now I remember it started leaking around that time I had the tailshaft done...

I might drop the tailshaft out and just seal it up temporarily, I really need this fixed for the pits inspection.

It must have moved a bit or something to make it leak, i personally havent seen those plugs leak (not saying they can't tho). Temporary glue i would look at rtv blue or ultra blue. The ultra blue sticks like shit to fur and i use it often in gearboxes as a gasket. Don't use the clear stuff as it doesnt last. Probly clean the area with a good carby/brake cleaner as it dries clean

Cheers mate, yeah I thought it was a bit odd, I haven't seen it happen on any factory nissan parts but being a custom tailshaft might have something to do with it and I can't think of any other place where it would be leaking.

I'll give that a try after the easter period when I can get out to the shops again.

Hey mate, I'm currently sorting the same problem.

Consider:

* Aftermarket tailsahft might have a slightly thinner yoke than the factory one.

I went to a place that sells just oil seals, o-rings etc, gave them the seal, and got one with a smaller inside diameter

(factory is 50 x 35 x 12, I got a 50 x 34 x 11 (12 not available))

I actually had to try a few different sizes, I eventually got one in that size, that had a metal sleeve on the outside, requiring it to be tapped/pressed into the gearbox (this gave it a tigher seal on the inside diameter).

* O-Ring on the speedo drive.

I replaced this as well, the same time as the metal sleeved output seal. Mine was flat, so I got a new one, it was alot harder to slide the drive back into the gearbox.

I couldnt see exactly where the leak was coming from, because soo much oil was leaking out of the gearbox, pretty much everything was drenched (even the exhaust, tunnel, floorpan had oil spilt all over)

Seems to have fixed the problem, whatever it was. But now I got another leak coming from a hairline crack on the gearbox housing :\

K so I took the tailshaft out today and had a bit of a look. Took a pic just to show you the welch plug.

I filled the yoke with water to the top and put my hand over the top to put some pressure down on the water and surely enough it started leaking water out of the welch plug. So what I'm going to do is now seal it and hope it's a good enough temporary fix so I can pass the inspection.

    • Hi all, I’ve just finished fitting the timing belt on my RB25, following the standard procedure: rotate the crank twice, release the tensioner, then tighten it down. The belt feels tight, and you can see that clearly in the picture below I’ve heard some people say it’s actually better for the belt to be slightly loose rather than too tight, as excessive tension can lead to snapping. So that’s in the back of my mind. What I’m seeing is this:  • At idle, the belt looks fine.  • But when cranking and especially when revving (around 3–4,000 RPM), there’s a momentary flap/flex or flicker in the belt, which I’ve tried to capture in the video. So my question is — based on what you see, is this slight belt movement something you’d consider normal, or am I just being OCD? Could this amount of movement cause sync issues? Or is it just a harmless bit of flex under load?   from what I know belt flap and flex is expected when crank spins up and pull cam with it Would appreciate any thoughts or similar experiences.     IMG_7656.mov IMG_7657.mov
    • I've replaced the front brakes of my NA to 324 brembos and 350z calipers: i'm going for 225/40-18 up front and 245/35-18 in the back. I have Rays 7.5*19 ET35(225/35) in the front with 5mm spacers otherwise the calipers "lock up/ won't rotate". When i use the calculator i come up with 8*18 ET30 for 225/40...... but not sure i get problems with the calipers. Anyone riding around with 18 inch. that can confirm "that it'll fit"? In the back it's 7.5*9 ET30 (245/30) with the 5mm spacers, but there is no problem with the standard small brakes, so i want to take 8.5*18 ET25 (245/35).
    • Lol.. but then.. always come back to a JDM..
    • Glad to hear. If possible, get your tuner to check air's to make sure everything is still where it should be.
    • The problem with FB/Insta/Reddit etc comments relating to cars is simple. You get to ask a question once, and get one round of replies. For things that can actually be answered in a few lines of text, once, it's fine. After 6 hours, your original question is lost to the void. There are no follow ups, additional questions, anything. No project car is ever such a simple list of questions to ask. You need discussion.
